Simon was ordained in 1978 and has served his entire ordained ministry in the , latterly as Rector of St Mark, St Sidwell and St Matthew in Exeter and then in Dawlish, Cofton and Starcross before retiring from full-time ministry in 2015. He will continue to live in his home in Exeter and will be on duty in the Team parishes on Sundays and for two further days each week on average. Simon will work alongside the Revd Geoffrey Fenton, Team Vicar, and Mrs Marion Kaye, Reader, together with two neighbouring ministers who will also be helping with services and pastoral care during this period: Prebendary Alan White, Rural Dean of Newton Abbot & Ipplepen, and Mr Jeremy Howell, Reader in the Newton Abbot Team Ministry. A very warm welcome to all of those coming to help us but especially Simon, and his wife Shirley, who will occasionally be with him in the Team, but will normally continue to worship in Exeter. We appreciate their willingness to give up retirement and being together in the congregation for worship, to enable Simon to come and be with us for the next six months.

From the Reverend Simon Croft, Assistant Priest. Dear Friends, In May, on Thursday 25th, we have the great feast of Our Lord’s Ascension – “the Glorious Ascension”. It is always on a Thursday, because it is forty days after Easter Day. In our Common Lectionary these days there is always provision to celebrate the Ascension on one of the neighbouring Sundays. One aspect of The Ascension that is not usually acknowledged is that it must have been so traumatic for the disciples – a time of intense emotions. In this way, we could say that the Ascension was a kind of surrender, of being left behind and of letting Our Lord go where they could not. In ourselves, when we are mourning someone, we want to hold on and not let go – we want to cling on tight to our loved ones. And so, for the disciples, how it must have taken great courage to live through the Ascension – they were experiencing contd on Page 5 3 Churchwardens St Mary the Virgin, Holne Any queries either to Gillian Parker (see below) or Marion Kaye (see Page 2 for details) St Raphael, Huccaby Gillian Parker Thimble Hall, Hexworthy, PL20 6SD 01364 631507 [email protected] St John the Baptist, Leusdon Geoff Bamsey 26 Old Manor Close, Holne Cross, TQ13 7JF 01364 652820 [email protected] Shan Palmes 3 Dunstone Cottages, Widecombe, TQ13 7TH 01364 621573 [email protected] St Gabriel, Postbridge Annie Smerdon The Stores, Postbridge, PL20 6TH 01822 880201 [email protected] Wendy Watson Middle Merripit Farm, Postbridge, PL20 6TJ 01822 880215 [email protected] St Pancras, Widecombe Michael Pascoe Wooder Bungalow, Widecombe, TQ13 7TR 01364 621333 [email protected] Penny Whale Wayside, , TQ13 7TA 01364 621411 [email protected] St Andrews, Ashburton William West Tawstock, Knowle Close, Ashburton TQ13 7RA 01364 652666 [email protected] Bill Shapley 18 Beverley Gardens, Ashburton, TQ13 7BL 01364 652263 [email protected] St Mary the Virgin, Bickington Peter Warren Rentor, Bickington 01626 821213 [email protected]

Our Lord had told and taught them that they would receive the power of the Holy Spirit, but how could they at that time understand what this would mean? How alone, lonely, they must have felt on the first Ascension Day, as the clouds parted. Loneliness is one of the great sadnesses that we experience in life. All of us have experienced loneliness, and social commentators rightly point out that it is growing through the trends of western culture, with its weakening of community and family life. There is something barren and raw with gnawing loneliness. But at our Lord’s Ascension – there is a promise ! Right at the end of St Matthew’s Gospel we read : “and remember, I am with you always”. I hope and pray that each of us will hold onto this wonderful promise of our Loving Lord. We believe Our Lord is with each of us, all the time. He has taken our humanity, - our foibles, our weaknesses and failures, and also our little bits of glory, - and carried them into the heart of God, for Our Lord ‘sits at God’s right hand’. For me that is why the Ascension is the “Glorious Ascension”. May our Loving Lord bless and keep each of us, always, Simon.

Here goes then…… Pasty & Pint Night Thank you to everyone who came along to the informal Pasty & Pint night on 10th March at the Old Inn. Fifty of our volunteers and their friends were there, and yet again we thank you for your contribution to Widecombe Fair. Everyone seemed to enjoy themselves and the feedback is excellent. One particular bit of feedback, though, has been taken on board. Everyone wants to hold the event again but, as several of you suggested, the get-together will take place this October rather than in Spring 2018. Donations The Widecombe Fair Committee met on 14th March and agreed the following organisations should benefit from a donation from the proceeds of the 2016 Fair, these donations being on top of the donations already announced: -- St Raphael’s Church, Huccaby (to help with new toilet facilities) -- Widecombe Sports Group (to help with improved lighting) -- Postbridge Village Hall (to help with purchasing a new piano) -- Parish Link (to keep the good work going and provide a mechanism for the Widecombe Fair Committee to keep all in the Parish up to speed!) There were earlier beneficiaries of donations but the key one was a donation to the local Young Farmers Club, who have established a Hub for the farming community based in Cheriton Bishop. This Hub opens at the beginning of April. As well as being an informal meeting point, it will also help support young and struggling local farmers. We are sure you have read about the suicide rates among young farmers, so every bit we can do to help those who might be affected is worthwhile. Apart from keeping tradition alive, we all need to remember that the Fair does a lot of good in the community. Again it is all down to the volunteers who freely donate their time and experience..…. 9 •All Aspects of Tree Surgery •Tree Inspections & Reports •Stump Grinding •Tree Decay Testing •Fully Insured •Free Advice and Quotations Aran Kimberlee Tel: 01364 72804 Mob: 07594 680168 BSc (Hons) Arboriculture, M Arbor A [email protected] www.dartforesttrees.co.uk. ‘TOTALLY WIRED’ - ELEcTRIcIAn Local Electrician with 30 years Experience Covering all Dartmoor and surrounding areas All aspects of electrical installation, Free Advice & Estimates Approved Installer of Energy Efficient Electrical Heating Part P Registered through NAPITS. 10 Do you have any time to spare? The Fair is looking for volunteers to help with, amongst other things, establishing the Traffic Plan; ie to keep coaches out of inappropriate bits of Widecombe on Fair Day and get authority for a ‘one day’ one-way system for Fair Day. This isn’t onerous, but there are some tasks that need completing in April, May and June. As they say in all the best job adverts, ‘full training will be given’. The only requirement is that you must be able to get on-line. For those who prefer something more strenuous, there are a few sections of Fair Field wall that need repairing, including near the school (hint) so if anyone is up for that, please join us for a work party on Saturday13th May – these things are usually good fun. Contact Mike Pascoe at [email protected] if you think you can help. Grass Keep The Grass Keep in the Fair Field and adjacent pasture, as advertised earlier, was bid for and won by The Glebe Farm Partnership (Michael Lamb and Margaret Rogers). Their grazing rights, and maintenance commitments, start on 1st April and we wish them well and good grass growing weather. Exciting Changes for 2017 A formal Contract has been signed to help the Parish Council and the Widecombe Fair Committee integrate the Village Green activity with the Fair Field activity from this September’s Fair onwards. This should give visitors a better ‘whole Fair experience’ with the recent commercial activity on the Green being, at least in part, displaced. There will still be some ‘fun’ elements on the Green. There is a lot of work to do to make this work, and more volunteers are always needed. Tap any member of the Committee on the arm or, if you ain’t sure who they are, ask at the Rugglestone – there will probably be one or more of them in there. The Committee thinks that is it for this month….. Planning for this year’s Fair is now beginning in earnest. If you think you can do a bit to help, please don’t be shy. Contact any Committee Member or if all else fails contact Jenny on [email protected] or me on [email protected] Best Wishes, The Fair Committee. 11 Widecombe Fair - Tuesday 12th September 2017 Produce Show Schedule Cls Description Cls Description VEGETABLES AND FLOWERS CHILDREN’S CLASSES - Hermon French Silver Salver for Tame Challenge and Hutchins Cup 1 Three coloured potatoes washed All Classes under 16 years 2 Three white potatoes washed 28 A homemade greetings card 3 Three onions, grown from sets 29 A model from recycled materials 4 Three carrots, trimmed and washed 30 A garden on a plate 5 Three beetroot, trimmed and washed 31 A ‘Lego’ model 6 Six runner beans 32 Two decorated gingerbread men 7 Longest runner bean 33 A flower arrangement in an unusual container 8 Any vegetable not mentioned in schedule 9 Any squash or courgette 10 A collection of 5 different vegetables, any variety in a standard vegetable box 12”x 16” ART AND CRAFT - OPEN TO ALL AGES 11 Four tomatoes Gordon Daw Memorial Trophy 12 Four varieties of culinary herbs in a jar of water Under 16s to be judged separately 13 A plate of berry fruit - one variety 34 An arrangement of grasses, wtigs, ferns and 14 Three Dahlias berries (NO FLOWERS) 15 Single rose 35 A flower arrangement in a teacup 16 Single stem any flower 36 A flower arrangement not to exceed 30 inches 17 Pot plant - in flower or just foliage in any dimension 18 Any brassica 37 An item of homemade jewellery HOME PRODUCE competitors own recipe Rose Bowl 38 A collage - any medium 19 A decorated carrot cake 39 Painting - any subject, any medium 20 Homity Pie 40 A needlework item 21 Millionaire’s Shortbread 41 A knitted, woven or crocheted article 22 A chocolate swiss roll 42 Any craftwork item not mentioned in the scedule 23 Traditional Meat Pasty 43 Made from wood ! 24 Speciality Bread of your own choice 44 A short poem 25 1 lb pot of homemade jam 45 A photograph - animal/bird magic 26 A jar of homemade Chutney 27 A bottle of homemade drink - beer/cider/wine/ cordial Get planning now ! 12 It’s that time of year again and the green-fingered amongst us are busily sowing, potting on, splitting and digging ready for our plant sale on Saturday, May 13 in Holne Village Hall. This is the visit we had to cancel last year due to an outbreak of summer holidays! Located between Torquay and Newton Abbot, the garden is laid out to represent the five continents of the world. The garden contains countless rare and exotic plants seldom seen outside their native lands. The green Devon hills and woodland all around frame distant views of the River Teign. The adjoining rare plant nursery sells plants and trees seen in the gardens. Easter Sunday and Spring Once again, a service of Holy Communion was held at Huccaby on Easter Sunday, this year it was led by the Archdeacon of Totnes, Douglas Dettmer. Henty Watts Poem ‘St Raphael’s’ contains some lines which beautifully describe this time of year: And in the Spring, when poppies start, And the purple heather hides the lark; Gorse flower sweetens the cruellest thorn And all the black-faced lambs are born. We few, we kneel in Easter prayer, And risen Lord is with us here. What this poem doesn’t mention are the bluebells which start to appear in May in Huccaby. They make a wonderful sight as you climb the hill from Hexworthy Bridge towards the Forest Inn. Reminder - Richard Lester Concert 7pm 27th May Richard Lester is a well-known organist and harpsichordist who trained at the London College of Music. He has given organ recitals in cathedrals including St. Pauls, Ely, Coventry and Westminster as well as Kings College Cambridge and St. Marks in Venice. Richard has kindly agreed to give a concert in St. Raphael’s on Saturday 27th May at 7pm with half the proceeds going to St. Raphael’s. The programme will consist of pieces by George Frederick Handel as it is the 300th anniversary of The Water Music and Bach. Tickets will be available on the night and cost £10 to include a glass of wine (or juice). Further information is on the website www.straphaelhuccaby.org and for more information about Richard go to www.richardlester.org.uk . This should be a wonderful evening and we look forward to seeing plenty of people there. 23 • QUALIFLIED SWEEP (City & Guilds, HETAS) • Member of APCIS • Prices from as little as £35 • Experienced • Very Clean • Approved solid fuel engineer (HETAS) CALL Steve Thompson on: email: [email protected] www.thechimney-sweep.co.uk 07866 025686 or 01626 587587

What the Bible really means.... A father was approached by his small son who told him proudly, ‘I finally figured out what the Bible means!’ His father smiled and replied, ‘What, then?’ The son replied, ‘It stands for “Basic Information Before Leaving Earth”.’ Breakable There was a very gracious lady who was posting an old family Bible to her brother in another part of the country... ‘Is there anything breakable in here?’ asked the postal clerk. ‘Only the Ten Commandments,’ answered the lady. 24 St John the Baptist, Leusdon

Princetown Play Area Phase 3 The work installing the new equipment will start on April 26th 2017. In addition, a safety inspection was completed on the existing equipment and a small amount of remedial work will be undertaken. The council look forward to the young people of the village and wider community using the equipment. Dartmoor Classic Cycling Event In response to concerns about the behaviour of some entrants in this cycling event, raised by the parish council and others, the organisers are implementing a ‘Code of Conduct’. This includes guidance on sharing the road with other users. A draft version was reviewed by the parish council who broadly welcomed this initiative. Devon County Council Road Warden Scheme It was agreed to continue participating in the scheme where trained volunteers can undertake a range of highway maintenance work including repairing small potholes and cutting roadside verges. If anyone is interested in training to be a volunteer Road Warden they are urged to contact the Clerk on the above contact details. Princetown War Memorial the work on adding the additional names of two fallen servicemen and the replacement of missing letters onto the war memorial has now been completed. The council appreciate the contribution of Dartmoor National Park towards the cost of these works. Dartmoor Speedwatch new Vehicle Activated Signs have been installed at several sites across the moor. The signs, which are being funded through a partnership between the Dartmoor Livestock Protection Society (DLPS), Dartmoor Forest Parish Council (DFPC) and the Dartmoor National Park Authority (DNPA), warn motorists if they are exceeding the 40mph speed limit across Dartmoor. The signs are moveable and will be positioned at known ‘hot spots’ where drivers speed and animals have been killed in an attempt to reduce the numbers of ponies, sheep and cattle killed or injured each year on Dartmoor’s roads.

All the local businesses have been very supportive and hold the keypad number for it, which will also be given out by the emergency services as soon as 999 is called (it is VERY IMPORTANT to dial 999 immediately so help is on it's way). The defibrillator will be checked regularly, but if anyone should notice any thing wrong, please would you ring and leave a message on 01364 621520. We are going to hold a training session (I have been assured that you can use the defibrillator without being trained, but I think you would feel more confident about using it if you had been trained), I have several names already of people who would like to do the training, but please do give me ring on the above number if you would like to do the training,we have room for 20 people on the first session, but I am sure we can arrange another session if more than this number would like to do it.
