Local Government (Boundaries) Order () 1992

Made 6th July 1992 Coming into operation in accordance with Article 1

To be laid before Parliament under paragraph 3(3) of Schedule 1 to the Northern Ireland Act 1974

WHEREAS, in pursuance of section 50(4) of the Local Government Act (Northern Ireland) 1972(a), the Local Government Boundaries Commis­ sioner submitted a report to the Department of the Environment recommending alterations in the boundaries of certain districts, the number of wards and the boundaries and names of certain wards;

AND WHEREAS this Order gives effect to those recommendations without modifications;

NOW THEREFORE, the Department of the Environment, in exercise of the powers conferred by sections 50(6) and 148(1) ofthe Local Government Act (Northern Ireland) 1972 and now vested in it(b) and of every other power enabling it in that behalf, hereby makes the following Order:

Citation and commencement 1.-(1) This Order may be cited as the Local Government (Boundaries) Order (Northern Ireland) 1992. (2) Subject to paragraphs (3) and (4), this Order shall come into operation on 19th May 1993. (3) For the purpose of all proceedings preliminary or relating to an election to be held on or after that day this Order shall come into operation on 1st August 1992. .J . (4) For the purpose of making and levying of rates as provided in Part Il of the Rates (Northern Ireland) Order 1977(c) this Order shall come into effect on 1st April 1993.

I para. 2(1)(b);S.!. 1976/424 (N.!. 6) (c) S.!. 197712157 (N.!. 28) No. 303 Local Government 1997 Local Government districts, boundaries and wards 2.-(1) The names ofthe26 districts into which Northern Ireland shall be divided for the purposes of local government shall be as set out in Schedule 1. (2) Each district shall comprise the area designated on the maps by reference to the name of the district and demarcated by a red line thereon. (3) The 26 districts shall be divided into wards which shall bear the names set out in Schedule 2; and each such ward shall comprise the area designated on the maps by reference to the name of the ward and demarcated by a blue line thereon. (4) Where a boundary of a district or ward- (a) does not follow the line of a townland boundary or a local government district or ward boundary existing immediately before the coming into operation of this Order; and . (b) is shown along a road, railway line, path, stream, river or other similar topographical feature; it shall betreated as being along the centre line thereof unless otherwise stated on the maps. . (5) The wards constituted by this Order shall have the boundaries thereof mered by the Ordnance Survey of Northern Ireland. (6) In this Article' the expression "the maps" shall be construed in accordance with Article 3.

Maps . 3. The maps referred to in this Order are the volumes of maps, showing the local government districts of Northern Ireland and the wards into which those districts are divided, each of which volume has been marked- "MAPS REFERRED TO IN THE LOCAL GOVERNMENT (BOUNDARIES) ORDER (NORTHERN IRELAND) 1992" and signed and sea.1ed with reference to this Order and deposited at the office of the Department of the Environment at ~arliament Buildings, Stormont, .

Revocation 4. The Local Government (Boundaries) Order (Northern Ireland) 1984(a) is hereby revoked.

This Order gives effect without modifications to the recommendations made under the Local Government Act (Northern Ireland) 19.72 by the Local Government Boundaries Commissioner in relation to the number, boundaries and names ofthe districts into which Northern Ireland is to be divided for the purposes of local government and the number, boundaries and names of the wards into which each of those districts is to be divided.

The boundaries of the local government districts and their wards are as shown on the maps deposited with the Department of the Environment for Northern Ireland at Parliament Buildings, Stormont, Belfast. (Articles 2 and 3).

Copies of these maps are deposited with the Chief Survey Officer of the Ordnance Survey of Northern Ireland and a copy of the volume or volumes of the maps relating to a local government district is deposited at the district council office. The copies are available for inspection at all reasonable times by any person.

This Order replaces the Local Government (Boundaries) Order (Northern Ireland) 1984 which is revoked by Article 4.
