Citi cardmembers, plus Paley Patron, Fellow, and Supporting Members, will have an exclusive opportunity to purchase tickets first during a special presale starting January 14. This year’s festival will open with the cast and creative team from ABC’s Modern Family, followed by Pop TV’s One Day at a Time, Netflix’s A Special Evening with Dolly Parton & Dolly Parton’s Heartstrings, CBS’s NCIS: 400th Episode Celebration, Amazon Prime Video’s The Boys, CBS All Access’ Star Trek: Picard, Starz’s Outlander, HBO’s Curb Your Enthusiasm, Netflix’s Dead to Me, Netflix’s Ozark, Pop TV’s Schitt’s Creek, and the festival will close with Disney+’s The Mandalorian. “Every year television fans know that PaleyFest LA is the place to be for the inside scoop on the most acclaimed and popular shows on television, and this year’s lineup is no exception,” said Maureen J. Reidy, the Paley Center’s President & CEO. “From some of the top shows in drama, comedy, fantasy, science fiction, and a special celebration of one of the world’s most beloved entertainers, there is something for every television fan to enjoy at this year’s PaleyFest.” It’s not just television fans who are inspired by PaleyFest—it’s also the actors and brilliant minds behind the shows featured. Over the Festival’s rich history some of the most talented names in television have graced the PaleyFest stage, and the tradition continues this year when PaleyFest welcomes the cast and creative teams behind today’s most acclaimed shows. “It’s an honor to be invited to PaleyFest and join other filmmakers and talent in celebrating great television programming. It is especially exciting to be representing our Disney+ series, The Mandalorian, at the closing night presentation,” said Jon Favreau, executive producer/creator, The Mandalorian. “What a great opportunity to thank our fans for their support over seventeen years. That this show is still stronger than ever is a testament to this cast and crew and our fan loyalty. We look forward to celebrating with them at PaleyFest and are appreciative of being included in the lineup,” said NCIS star and executive producer Mark Harmon. “I keep telling my wife, my sh*t belongs in a museum. Well, who’s laughing now?? The brilliant cast and troubled producers of The Boys can’t wait to get together with their fans and say some inappropriate things. Seriously, it's an amazing honor for a freshman show to be chosen by PaleyFest. We look forward to making them deeply regret it,” said The Boys executive producer and showrunner Eric Kripke. “We are honored to be included as part of PaleyFest LA. We love being able to speak directly to the Outlander fans and we look forward to taking this opportunity to thank them for their tremendous support over the years,” said Outlander executive producer Ronald D. Moore. "We couldn't be happier. The list of shows that have been included in PaleyFest is like a laundry list of our favorite series ever. So, to get to share the start of Ozark season three on that stage is truly an honor,” said Ozark executive producer Chris Mundy. "As a longtime fan of PaleyFest, I’m deeply honored and nerdily excited to celebrate Dead to Me on the PaleyFest stage with our cast and fans,” said Dead to Me creator and executive producer Liz Feldman. • 2 Days in NEW York PRESENTED by ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY
The Premieres program showcases some of the most highly anticipated dramatic films of the coming year. Catch world premieres and the latest work from established directors at the Sundance Film Festival before they create a splash at local theatres. 2 DAYS IN New York DIRECTOR: Julie Delpy France, 2011, 91 min., color English and French with English subtitles Marion and Mingus live cozily—perhaps too cozily—with their cat and two young children from previous relationships. However, when Marion’s jolly father (played by director Delpy’s real-life dad), her oversexed sister, and her sister’s outrageous boyfriend unceremoniously descend upon them for a visit, it initiates two unforgettable days that will test Marion and Mingus’s relationship. With their unwitting racism and sexual frankness, the French triumvirate hilariously has no boundaries or filters . and no person is left unscathed in its wake. Directed and cowritten by Julie Delpy, 2 Days in New York is a deliciously PRESENTED by Entertainment Weekly witty romp. One of the pleasures of this follow-up film to 2 Days in Paris is the addition of Chris Rock, who—amid the Gallic mayhem—convincingly plays the straight man as Marion’s hipster American boyfriend. With great skill and energy, Delpy heightens cultural differences to comedic extremes but also manages to show that sometimes change is the best solution to a relationship that’s been pushed to its limit.—K.Y. • Major Kira of Star Trek: Ds9: Woman of the Future, Creation of the 90S
MAJOR KIRA OF STAR TREK: DS9: WOMAN OF THE FUTURE, CREATION OF THE 90S Judith Clemens-Smucker A Thesis Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of MASTER OF ARTS December 2020 Committee: Becca Cragin, Advisor Jeffrey Brown Kristen Rudisill © 2020 Judith Clemens-Smucker All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT Becca Cragin, Advisor The 1990s were a time of resistance and change for women in the Western world. During this time popular culture offered consumers a few women of strength and power, including Star Trek: Deep Space Nine’s Major Kira Nerys, a character encompassing a complex personality of non-traditional feminine identities. As the first continuing character in the Star Trek franchise to serve as a female second-in-command, Major Kira spoke to women of the 90s through her anger, passion, independence, and willingness to show compassion and love when merited. In this thesis I look at the building blocks of Major Kira to discover how it was possible to create a character in whom viewers could see the future as well as the current and relatable decade of the 90s. By laying out feminisms which surround 90s television and using original interviews with Nana Visitor, who played Major Kira, and Marvin Rush, the Director of Photography on DS9, I examine the creation of Major Kira from her conception to her realization. I finish by using historical and cognitive poetics to analyze both the pilot episode “Emissary” and the season one episode “Duet,” which introduce Major Kira and display character growth.
