THE COLONY OF VICTORIA.

THE COLONY of VICTORIA, which from 1835 to July 1st, 1851, formed a portion of New South Wales, under the name of Port Phillip, may be said to have been practically discovered in January 1802, by Lieutenant John Murray, the commander of the Lady Nelson, although its coast line had been partially surveyed and named by his predeces,or, Lieutenant Grant, in the previous year, and Bass had, so early as June 4, 1798, visited Western Port, one of its harbours, an the course of a whale-boat expedition along the coast. At that time, however, the Southern portion of Australia was supposed to be connected with Tasmania, and the wide passage now known as Bass's Straits, and whitened by the sails of ships of every nationality, was believed to be only a deep bight in the land, of which Western Purt was a small arm. It ought, perhaps, here also to be stated that on April 19, 1770, Captain Cook in the Endeavour sighted the coast near Ram Head (Point Hicks now called Cape Everard). On April 26, 1802, Captain Flinders, in the Investigator, sailed up the Bay of Port Phillip (which was so named after Captain Phillip, the first governor of New South Wales), and in 1803 Mr. Grimes, the Surveyor-General of New South Wales,41iscovered and rowed up the river at the head of the bay, then, as now, known by its native name Yarra•Yarra, or ever flowing. Mr. Grimes is believed to have ascended as far as what is at present known as Studley Park. During the same year Lieutenant Colonel Collins, who was judge advocate in Captain Philhp's expedition that colonized N. S. Wales, was sent out from England, with a small armed force and &party of convicts, in order to form a settlement on the shores of Port Phillip similar to that in Botany Bay. This expedition, consisting in all of 402 souls, comprised 15 Government officials, 9 officers of marines, 2 drummers and 39 privates, 5 soldiers' wives and a child, 307 convicts with 17 of their wives and a child, carried in H.M. ship Calcutta 50 guns 1200 tons, and the tender - Ocean, (600 tons) arrived on October 7 and 11, 1803, and landed in a part of the southern portion of the bay near the present site of Sorrento. Finding no water, Collins abandoned such an apparently sterile and inhospitable spot on .January 27th, 1804, after a short sojourn of about three months, tempted, too, no doubt, by the glowing accounts he had heard of the beauty and fertility of the opposite shores of Tasmania, to which place he removed. It is recorded as a singular fact, that during the course of an exploration tour, undertaken by some of the officers of the convict fleet, a rapidly flowing stream was discovered, in the sandy bed of which grains of a sparkling substance were found which were at first thought to be gold, but were after- wards declared to be mica. With the present knowledge of the auriferous character of most Australian streams, it is more than probable that the first surmise was the correct one. Victoria, or, as it was then called, Port Phillip, does not appear to have attracted any attention for the twenty years following this cursory visit, and, in fact, all that is known of the country in the interior, is the meagre information obtained from one William Buckley (a soldier and a native of Macclesfield, in Cheshire, who had been transported for striking his superior officer), who escaped into the bush during Collins's encampment on the bay, and d welt for many years with the aborigines. In the year 1824, two stockowners, named Hamilton Hume and W. C. Hovell, living near Lake George, in New South Wales, determined to explore the unknown country to the south of them in search of new pastures, and after a laborious and protracted journey of four hundred miles, during which they passed over the Australian Alps and crossed 'he rivers now known as the Hume or Upper Murray, the Ovens, and the Goulburn or Hovell, came out on the shores of a bay, which, from what they had heard, they imagined to be Western Port, but which there is little doubt was the western arm of Port Phillip, somewhere about where now stands the large and flourishing town of Geelong. It is singular that during the course of this arduous journey Messrs. Hume and Hovell should have altogether missed sight of the vast stretches of magnificent sheep country that skirted them on every hand. Hume and Hovell made no attempt at settlement in the new country they had found. In 1826, in order to forestall a supposed design of the French to occupy some portion of the Southern Coast, an expedition, consisting of detachments of the 3rd and 30th Regiments, under the command of Captain S. Wright and Lieutenant B. I. Burchall, was dispatched from Sydney to the shores of Western Port Bay at a place called Old Settlement Point, facing French Island. Hovell was attached to this party. The place was occupied for about a year, and then abandoned ; the ruins of the dwellings are yet to be seen. In November 1834, the Messrs. Henty, a firm engaged in whaling pursuits in Tasmania, estab- lished a branch station at Portland, in the south-western district, and imported sheep and cattle to feed on the rich grass of that favoured locality. This was, indeed, the first real attempt at settlement in Victoria, and thence may be traced the spread of flocks and herds over the country, which has made the name of Victoria more famous even than the vast plains' of South America, as a cattle and sheep-breeding territory. The Messrs. Henty were folloWed MIL-MOU] TOWNS IN SOUTH AUSTRALIA. 281 tural one. PROVINCIAL DISTRICT OF NELSON.

NELSON is the most northern province of the Southern Island. Its boundaries are Marlborough on the east, Canterbury on the south, and the South Pacific Ocean on the north and west. Its extreme length is 160 miles, the breadth 100 miles, and the coast-line extends about 250 miles, the area being 6,700,000 acres. The population on March 3rd, 1878, was 14,385 males and 10,473 females, a total of 25,128, a decrease of 453 souls on the returns of the previous year. The mineral products of Nelson are coal and copper ; gold has also been discovered. During the year ending June 30th, 1878, 4,235 oz., of gold valued at £16,651 was produced, making a total for the province of 1,617,558 oz. and valued at £6,423,478. In the valley of the Waimea a considerable tract of land is taken up for agricultural purposes. At the Grey and the Buller are valuable and extensive gold-fields ; coal, too, has been found of good quality, and apparently extending over a large tract of country. One of the most important industries at present carried on in the province is the Parapara Iron and Coal Company, formed for the purpose of developing the metallurgic resources in the neighbourhood of Collingwood. The tunnel has been explored 1,088 feet, of which 600 feet is the tunnel itself, and the remainder the uprise. The quality of the coal has been proved suitable for ocean-going steamers, gas manufacture, and domestic use. A company has been started to work the West Wanganui coal field. The leading towns are Nelson, Cobden, Charlestown, Brighton, and Westport. The principal streams are the rivers Grey, Buller, Aorere, Takaka, Motueka, Waimea, and Hurunui. The genera] feature of the country is rugged and mountainous, more so than any other province of equal area. The prevailing scenery is bold and grand, the soil in many of the valleys exceedingly rich and fertile, and the climate soft and genial. Although agriculture is carried on to a considerable extent in various parts of the province, still the great wealth of Nelson lies in her minerals, which it is believed are not surpassed by any other part of the colony. Unlimited beds of the very finest iron ore, limestone, coal, chrome ore, lead and copper ores, and gold, both alluvial and in quartz, are met with in spots highly favourable ; and ironworks, in particular, cannot fail to become a great industry in Nelson. A railway from Nelson to Foxhill-20 miles—is now open. The returns for February 1878, give the following as the distribution and yield of the principal crops : The number of holdings, in all. 1464 ; wheat, 2,794 acres ; oats, 3,951 acres ; barley, 2,074 acres ; potatoes, 1,033 acres. The estimated produce for the year ending February 1878, was wheat, 45,817 bushels, oats, 28,010 bushels ; barley 37,6S3 potatoes, 5,473 tons ; hay, 2,737 tons. The stock was estimated at the following numbers : 4,749 horses, 25,793 cattle, 591,384 sheep, 7,290 pigs, and 83,724 poultry.

PROVINCIAL DISTRICT OF WESTLAND. The province of WESTLAND, which was formerly a part of Canterbury, occupies the western portion of the Southern Island, about midway between the province of Nelson on the north and Otago on the south. Its eastern boundary is the province of Canterbury. Its western frontier entirely faces the ocean. It is a long, narrow strip of country, about 200 miles in length, by an average breadth of 30 miles. The principal town is Hokitiki. The population on March 3rd, 1878, was 16,932-10,577 males, 6,355 females, being a decrease on the previous year of 388. The rich gold-fields that have been discovered in different parts have, at various times, drawn a large influx of population. The diggings are principally of the alluvial character. In some parts, as at Ross, the sinkings are of great depth, and a striking feature of them is said to be that the oldest alluvial drifts, from which the more modern drifts are derived, rise V. a higher level than the present water-level of the province. At Kumera rush, a spot near the old Greenstone diggings, about 15 miles from Hokitiki, and the same distance from Greymouth, good paying quartz has been obtained, and there is a fair prospect of a permanent gold-field. For the year ending June 30th, 1878, there were 163,265 ozs. of gold produced, and valued at £645,087. The total quantity of gold exported from the province up to June 30th, 1878, was 2,217,376 ozs., the value being £8,776,802. Besides gold mining, which is carried on in almost all parts of the country—the very sea-beaches being found impregnated with the precious metal —agriculture, cattle-grazing, and timber-getting is carried on to some extent. There is land throughout the whole of Westland abounding in the very finest timber, including white pine and cedar, and easily accessible from the sea-coast ; and the few inland tracks, lately cut, show that some of the best agricultural land exists between the low-lying hills and the main range. In cutting recently the Waituhu prospecting track for a line of road, thousands of acres of open land, with six feet to 10 feet of rich black soil, were found, fit locations for extensive farms. All the rivers in Westland, and the bays in the southern parts, abound in fish ; and flax of excellent quality is found in all parts of the province, the moist climate being very favourable to its growth. Scarcely anything has, however, been done yet to utilize it, although, if properly cultivated, each acre of land would yield more than two tons of marketable) flax. Coal is obtained in several localities, and lead and silver ore (galena) has been discovered, as well as copper, iron, and tin. A railway now connects Greymouth with the Brunner and Wallsend coal mining districts. The stock returns of a late date were 759 horses, 2,688 cattle, 4,588 sheep, and 30,626 poultry. On General Tips

These can show up in the extra text in the search results list. A few minutes trial will help you to avoid using characters that are more prone to being misread, e.g. try entering "rederi" if you want "Frederick", but find that the letters "F" "c" and "k" are sometimes misread. • use the "Match whole word" option to eliminate unnecessary items in your results list, e.g. to eliminate all the blacksmiths and tinsmiths etc when you only want the name Smith • use the "Match case" option when you want to eliminate all the occupations "smith" if you only want the name "Smith" • Don’t just search for names. Search the book for other names, places and subjects of interest: • look for others of the same name • look for others who lived in the same place or street • who was the postmaster or police officer in the town? • how often and at what time did the coach arrive in town? • what churches were there and what time were services held? • what other activities were there in the community? • look for others who had the same occupation or other interests All of this and more may be available in a seemingly mundane book such as a directory.
