First of all, I would like to thank my committee members for all of their amazingly helpful feedback and guidance throughout graduate school and throughout the dissertation process. Thank you to co-chair Steve Hoelscher, for always encouraging me to clarify my ideas and to think harder about methodology and approach. While I didn’t end-up mentioning Freedom Ship in my final project, the seminar paper I wrote for his class on American Space and Place got me thinking about the idea of cruise ships as mini-utopias, and his amazing lecturing skills, which I got to witness as a teaching assistant in my second year in grad school, continue to provide a model to me of what engaged teaching looks like. Thank you to Paul Adams, who has made me look closer at issues of invisibility, power, and the possibilities of service-industry subversion, and who has also clued me in to the importance of scanning the Internet for the buzz around small town restaurant reviewers. I cannot imagine doing any of this without him. vii Spaces of Indulgence: Desire, Disgust, and the Aesthetics of Mass Appeal Stephanie Jean Kolberg, Ph.D. The University of Texas at Austin, 2012 Co-Supervisors: Jeffrey Meikle and Steven Hoelscher This dissertation examines the narratives surrounding spaces that represent a fantasy of democratized pleasure, power, and excess. In looking at the construction of the gentlemen’s club image, the promotion of Carnival cruise ships, and the discourse surrounding Red Lobster, this project explores the way different types of “indulgent” consumer spaces embody tensions between disgust and desire, and serve as examples of the way various anxieties and ideals are formulated and invoked as articulations of/contests over aesthetic meaning. By putting seemingly disparate types of consumer spaces into conversation with one another, this dissertation seeks to analyze underlying interconnections which would otherwise remain cordoned off in separate disciplines and within separate schools of thought. The upscaling of strip clubs into gentlemen’s clubs, beginning in the 1980s, reveals the methods by which so-called elements of disgust have been disguised, and in which aesthetic cues have been employed to minimize feelings of transgression and to bolster a sense of mainstream “normalcy.” Through downplaying elements seen as lower-class, gentlemen’s club owners have attempted to obscure cues of transgression in order to normalize zones of male power.

Today's news is the result of a new partnership between Carnival Cruise Line and Heinemann Asia Pacific, a subsidiary of Gebr. Heinemann. The partnership will deliver an ideal mix of local and global brands such as Seafolly, Quay Australia, Swarovski, Swatch, Lacoste and Clinique to Carnival's Australian guests. The move into the Australian market by Heinemann Asia Pacific follows the success of an existing partnership between the two brands in the US with similar experiences onboard Carnival Fantasy, Carnival Liberty and Carnival Ecstasy. Many cruise ships have been in “warm” lay-up, when they have periodically moved from their berths or anchorages and gone for short voyages locally to give their engines and equipment “a run”, and including production of freshwater, before returning to lay-up. Ships at anchor periodically need to berth to take onboard fuel, food, provisions and other supplies. Some inter-ship crew transfers at sea are being made, outside port limits. With the resumption of “normal” cruising looking very uncertain in many countries in the near future, more cruise ships are likely to move to “cold” lay-up until the situation becomes clearer, whilst others go into shipyards for overhauls and surveys. Many cruise ships have been in lay-up for over a year, as the initial “pause” has been continually extended due to more Covid-19 outbreaks, and many financial assumptions made on the expectation of an initial two-months lockdown have needed reviewing. This has resulted in many recent sales of older ships, and limited cruising in the Mediterranean and Europe, where these areas are being affected by sporadic outbreaks in Covid-19 infections. The largest concentration of laid-up cruise ships is on the Bahamas Banks (east of Miami and south of Freeport) A large number of cruise ships are anchored off the south coast of England, west of Southampton. Another large group are anchored in the South China Sea, NE of Singapore.
