FIRST CHURCH WELCOMES YOU

We extend a warm welcome to all who are visiting with us today and hope you will return to worship with our community of faith again. If you would like to know more about our ministry in downtown and metropolitan Pittsburgh, please speak to a pastor, any of our members, or visit www.flcpittsburgh.org.

Our liturgy incorporates historic practices of the Western Christian tradition, aspects of which may be unfamiliar to some. We hope this bulletin will serve to welcome our visitors and be an aid to those who seek to participate in our worship of God.

Assisted listening devices are available at the ushers’ table in the rear of the Nave. Easy-to-use receivers with either an earpiece or a neck loop are available. Antiseptic wipes are available to clean assisted listening equipment before use.

That we may better protect one another, masks are required for the duration of the liturgy, except when receiving the Sacrament. Masks should be closely fitted and must cover the mouth and nose. Exceptions will be made for those two years of age or younger.

PARKING is available on Sundays at Mellon Square and Smithfield/Liberty garage for $1.00. Tickets must be validated by the attendant at the reception desk.

YOUNG CHILDREN said, “Let the little children come to me.” The presence of children in worship, even when they are wiggly and noisy, is a gift to the Church and a reminder that our parish is growing. Children's bulletins, drawing tablets, and crayons are available in the back of the nave, which you are asked to please take home at the conclusion of today’s liturgy. A family restroom with a changing table is available downstairs.

HOLY COMMUNION is offered by invitation of the Lord himself. All baptized believers who trust that Christ is present in the Eucharist, regardless of denomination, are invited to receive the Blessed Sacrament.

To receive the Sacrament, an usher will dismiss each party from their pews to come forward, beginning with the center aisle. The pastor will place a paper cup containing an individual host on the small table in front of the chancel and step back. You may then yourself. Communion will be offered only under the form of bread at this time, but we may be assured that in so doing, we receive the whole Christ. If you are in need of a gluten free wafer, please ask the pastor. If you choose not to receive communion, you may request a blessing instead. After receiving communion (or a blessing), please be prepared to exit the church through the parish house doors. A basket will be found to the left of the altar where you may place your paper cup.

THE THIRD SUNDAY OF EASTER

April 18, 2021—8:30 & 11:00 AM

Thank you for silencing your electronic devices before worship. The people prepare for worship by silently praying the following prayer:

 Grant, we pray, almighty God, that we who celebrate the Easter festival, kindled with heavenly desires, may ever thirst for the fountain of life, Jesus Christ our Lord. Read Psalm 98, p. 262

THE PRELUDE Offertoire sur le Chant d’O Filii et Filiae Nicolas LeBegue (O Sons & Daughters of the King)

The people stand as the bells peal.

THE APOSTOLIC GREETING P The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all. C And also with you.

KYRIE A In peace, let us pray to the Lord. C Lord, have mercy.

A For the peace from above, and for our salvation, let us pray to the Lord. C Lord, have mercy.

A For the peace of the whole world, for the well-being of the Church of God, and for the unity of all, let us pray to the Lord. C Lord, have mercy.

A For this holy house, and for all who offer here their worship and praise, let us pray to the Lord. C Lord, have mercy.

4

A Help, save, comfort, and defend us, gracious Lord. C Amen

THE HYMN OF PRAISE setting by John W. Becker Refrain—Intoned by Soloist , then sung by Congregation

Verses sung by Soloist Lord God, Heavenly King, Almighty God and Father: REFRAIN

We worship you, we give you thanks, we praise you for your glory. REFRAIN

Lord Jesus Christ, only Son of the Father, Lord God, Lamb of God: You take away the sin of the world: Have mercy on us. You are seated at the right hand of the Father; receive our prayer. REFRAIN

For you alone are the Holy One, you alone are the Lord, you alone are the Most High, Jesus Christ, with the Holy Spirit, in the glory of God the Father. Amen. REFRAIN

THE PRAYER OF THE DAY P Let us pray. O God, by the humiliation of your Son you lifted up this fallen world, rescuing us from the hopelessness of death. Grant your faithful people a share in the joys that are eternal, through your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. C Amen

THE FIRST LESSON—Acts 3:12-19 12[Peter] addressed the people, “You Israelites, why do you wonder at this, or why do you stare at us, as though by our own power or piety we had made him walk?13The God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob, the God of our ancestors has glorified his servant Jesus, whom you handed over and rejected in the presence of Pilate, though he had decided to release him. 14But you rejected the Holy and Righteous One and asked to have a murderer given to you, 15and you killed the Author of life, whom God raised from the dead. To this we are witnesses. 16And by faith in his name, his name itself has made this man strong, whom you see and know; and the faith that is through Jesus has given him this perfect health in the presence of all of you. 17“And now, friends, I know that you acted in ignorance, as did also your rulers. 18In this way God fulfilled what he had foretold through all the prophets, that his Messiah would suffer. 19Repent therefore, and turn to God so that your sins may be wiped out.”

L The Word of the Lord. C Thanks be to God.

THE PSALMODY—Psalm 133

Said responsively by whole verse, Leader / All

1Answer me when I call, O God, defender of my cause; you set me free when I am hard-pressed; have mercy on me and hear my prayer. 2“You mortals, how long will you dishonor my glory; how long will you worship dumb idols and run after false gods?” 3Know that the LORD does wonders for the faithful; when I call upon the LORD, he will hear me. 4Tremble, then, and do not sin; speak to your heart in silence upon your bed. 5Offer the appointed sacrifices, and put your trust in the LORD. 6Many are saying, “Oh, that we might see better times!” Lift up the light of your countenance upon us, O LORD. 7You have put gladness in my heart, more than when grain and wine and oil increase. 8I lie down in peace; at once I fall asleep; for only you, LORD, make me dwell in safety.

6

THE SECOND LESSON— 1 John 3:1-7 1See what love the Father has given us, that we should be called children of God; and that is what we are. The reason the world does not know us is that it did not know him. 2Beloved, we are God’s children now; what we will be has not yet been revealed. What we do know is this: when he is revealed, we will be like him, for we will see him as he is. 3And all who have this hope in him purify themselves, just as he is pure. 4Everyone who commits sin is guilty of lawlessness; sin is lawlessness. 5You know that he was revealed to take away sins, and in him there is no sin. 6No one who abides in him sins; no one who sins has either seen him or known him. 7Little children, let no one deceive you. Everyone who does what is right is righteous, just as he is righteous.

L The Word of the Lord. C Thanks be to God.

The people stand. THE VERSE Sung by Soloist C. Pock Alleluia. Christ being raised from the dead will never die again, death no longer has dominion over him. Our hearts burn within us while He opens to us the scriptures. Alleluia.

THE HOLY GOSPEL—Saint Luke 24:36b-48 P The Holy Gospel according to Saint Luke, the twenty-fourth chapter. C Glory to you, O Lord.

36bJesus himself stood among [the disciples] and said to them, “Peace be with you.” 37They were startled and terrified, and thought that they were seeing a ghost. 38He said to them, “Why are you frightened, and why do doubts arise in your hearts? 39Look at my hands and my feet; see that it is I myself. Touch me and see; for a ghost does not have flesh and bones as you see that I have.” 40And when he had said this, he showed them his hands and his feet. 41While in their joy they were disbelieving and still wondering, he said to them, “Have you anything here to eat?” 42They gave him a piece of broiled fish, 43and he took it and ate in their presence. 44Then he said to them, “These are my words that I spoke to you while I was still with you—that everything written about me in the law of Moses, the prophets, and the psalms must be fulfilled.” 45Then he opened their minds to understand the scriptures, 46and he said to them, “Thus it is written, that the Messiah is to suffer and to rise from the dead on the third day, 47and that repentance and forgiveness of sins is to be proclaimed in his name to all nations, beginning from Jerusalem. 48You are witnesses of these things.”

7

P The Gospel of the Lord C Praise to you, O Christ.

THE NICENE CREED C We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen.

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven; by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the virgin Mary, and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end.

We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son. With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorified. He has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one Baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen

10

The people remain standing.

THE PRAYERS A In the power of the resurrection, let us pray for the whole people of God in Christ Jesus, and for all people according to their needs.

A …Lord, in your mercy, C hear our prayer.

P Into your hands, O Lord, we commend all for whom we pray, trusting in your mercy, through your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord. C Amen

THE EXCHANGE OF PEACE P The peace of the Lord be with you always. C And also with you.

Please feel free to share Christ’s peace with those around you verbally, but from your pew. The people are seated as the gifts are prepared.

THE PREPARATION OF THE GIFTS HYMN O Sons & Daughters of the King French Carol, Sung by the Soloist. arr. John W. Becker

The people stand.

THE OFFERTORY PRAYER A Let us pray. Blessed are you, C O Lord our God, maker of all things. Through your goodness you have blessed us with these gifts. With them we offer ourselves to your service and dedicate our lives to the care and redemption of all that you have made, for the sake of him who gave himself for us, Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen

11

SURSUM CORDA P The Lord be with you. C And also with you.

P Lift up your hearts. C We lift them to the Lord.

P Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. C It is right to give him thanks and praise.

THE PREFACE P It is indeed right and salutary that we should at all times and in all places offer thanks and praise to you, O Lord, holy Father, almighty and everliving God.

But chiefly we are bound to praise you for the glorious resurrection of our Lord; for he is the true Passover Lamb who gave himself to take away our sin, who by his death has destroyed death, and by this rising has brought us to eternal life.

And so, with Mary Magdalene and Peter, and all the witnesses of the resurrection, with earth and sea and all their creatures, with angels and archangels, with cherubim and seraphim, we praise your name and join their unending hymn:

SANCTUS (Spoken) C Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might: Heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest.

THE EUCHARISTIC PRAYER P You are indeed holy, O God, the fountain of all holiness; you bring light from darkness, life from death, speech from silence. We worship you for our lives and for the world you give us. We thank you for the new world to come and for the love that will rule all in all. We praise you for the grace shown to Israel, your chosen, the people of your promise: the rescue from Egypt, the gift of the promised land, the memory of the fathers, the homecoming from exile, and the prophets' words that will not be in vain. In all this we bless you for your only-begotten Son, who fulfilled and will fulfill all your promises.

12

P In the night in which he was betrayed, our Lord Jesus took bread, and gave thanks; broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying: Take and eat; this is my body, given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me.

Again, after supper, he took the cup, gave thanks, and gave it for all to drink, saying: This cup is the new covenant in my blood, shed for you and for all people for the forgiveness of sin. Do this for the remembrance of me.

For as often as we eat of this bread and drink from this cup, we proclaim the Lord's death until he comes. C Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again.

P Therefore, O God, with this bread and cup we remember the incarnation of your Son: his human birth and the covenant he made with us. We remember the sacrifice of his life: his eating with outcasts and sinners, and his acceptance of death. But chiefly on this day we remember his rising from the tomb, his ascension to the seat of power, and his sending of the holy and life-giving Spirit. We cry out for the resurrection of our lives, when Christ will come again in beauty and power to share with us the great and promised feast. C Amen. Come, Lord Jesus.

P Send now, we pray, your Holy Spirit, that we and all who share in this bread and cup may be united in the fellowship of the Holy Spirit, may enter the fullness of the kingdom of heaven, and may receive our inheritance with all your saints in light. C Amen. Come, Holy Spirit.

P Join our prayers with those of your servants of every time and every place, and unite them with the ceaseless petitions of our great high priest until he comes as victorious Lord of all.

C Through him, with him, in him, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all honor and glory is yours, almighty Father, now and forever. Amen

13

THE LORD’S PRAYER P Gathered into one by the Holy Spirit, let us pray as Jesus taught us. C Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever and ever. Amen

THE FRACTION P Alleluia. Christ our Passover is sacrificed for us. C Therefore let us keep the feast. Alleluia.

THE BENEDICTION P Almighty God, Father,  Son, and Holy Spirit, bless you now and forever. C Amen

The people sit.

As you depart through the Parish House doors, you may pray the following prayer silently:

POST-COMMUNION PRAYER God, our Father, in the Eucharist you give us the Spirit of love and lead us to share in your life. Strengthen us through this food from heaven that we may live by the Gospel and follow your Son in the Way of the Cross. We ask this through Jesus Christ our Lord.

In order to avoid traffic jams and maintain social distancing, we are asking worshippers to leave the building immediately after receiving communion.
