The Lord Mayors of London are the City’s emissaries to the world be- yond the Square Mile and beyond UK borders. They have a wealth of experience promoting London and the British Isles to international business leaders and to key global influencers. They help to shape pub- lic perceptions of our city and coun- try – locally, nationally and globally.

Each Lord Mayor’s knowledge, ex- perience and perspective is invalu- able – and also unique – but in this era of rapid-paced change and roll- ing news, that contribution can all too easily be overlooked if we have no means of capturing and reflect- ing on what they have achieved.

The Reflections of the Lord Mayor event helps to redress this, and a core part of the mission of this an- nual event is to create a treasury of Lord Mayors’ experiences and Christopher Seow FRSA, Founder of Reflections of The Lord Mayor knowledge that will inform current and future generations.

I extend the warmest of welcomes to Reflections of the Lord Mayor guests, both old friends and new. It is a great pleasure to be in such convivial company in the wonderful surroundings of Trinity House to celebrate and reflect on an ancient and important civic office in one of the world’s great cities.

This event has filled an important gap among City traditions. Here we have a role that has been in exis- tence since the 12th century yet re- mains utterly relevant today.

In my twelve months as Lord Mayor, I travelled to places, met people and addressed issues worth several nor- mal lifetimes.

The Reflections dinner is an oppor- tunity to share some of these unfor- gettable experiences and the les- sons learned along the way.

Being Lord Mayor of London means devoting up to two years of your life to the 12-month office. And the -ex periences are indeed rewarding in a role unlike many others.

I appreciate the opportunity that the Reflections of The Lord Mayor dinner tonight will give, not just to reflect on my year in office, but to share views on the City today, par- ticularly from the perspective of my current role as Chairman of Mari- time London and in light of turmoil at home and abroad.

The world, the UK and our City are changing fast, which is having a direct impact on the challenges facing society, our communities and our City. Following a detailed research project with over 200 organisations, charities, experts and thought leaders, we have identified some critical issues which need to be addressed to help create ‘A Better City for All’. Our new ‘multiyear’ Lord Mayor’s Appeal will work on four key pillars to create a City that is Inclusive, Healthy, Skilled and Fair. The Sea Cadets is a national youth charity that works with some 14,000 young people across the UK and in Bermuda. Each of its 400 units across the UK and in Bermuda is organised and run by volunteers. Two long-serving volunteers from London units are celebrated at tonight’s Reflections event.

Chief Petty Officer (SCC) Joyce Porter, from Richmond Unit (pictured), has been nominated for her 50 years of service.

London Area Officer James Nisbet VR, Commander Royal Navy, says: “In 1967 Joyce worked with someone whose son volunteered at Richmond Sea Cadets, and he asked her if she knew of anyone who could type a couple of letters for them once a week. Joyce volunteered and she is still there using shorthand, although technology has moved on! When the Girls Nautical Training Corps became part of the Sea Cadet Corps, Joyce went into uniform so the unit could welcome girls.

“Over the years, Joyce has supported cadets at many wonderful events, whether at Buckingham Palace garden parties, a carpet guard at Guildhall and Mansion House, or on local and national courses. Joyce is a first aid instructor, and helps with training courses. She also has a Jack Petchey adult leaders’ award, a number of honours for long service, and the Queen’s Golden and Diamond Jubilee medal. Her family has given more than 150 years’ service to the Sea Cadets, and that support is ongoing.”

Chief Petty Officer (SCC) Paul Townsend, from City of London Unit, has been nominated for his service as Commanding Officer at the unit.

James Nisbet says: “Paul worked as an engineer in the Royal Navy for 15 years and, after leaving, immediately realised his enthusiasm and naval experience would be ideal for volunteering with Sea Cadets. He joined City of London Unit in February 1990, and within three years became Chief Petty Officer. An expert in navigation, seamanship and engineering, Paul was soon in overalls repairing and maintaining boats and minibuses, or creating imaginative and interesting training aids from a few pieces of rope and some whipping twine.

“His natural ease with young people saw him become Commanding Officer in 2005. Paul has inspired, encouraged and nurtured hundreds of cadets and volunteers alike. His passion, ability and commitment extend far beyond his unit, and he has supported cadets in seamanship or engineering courses as an instructor. Paul gives an immeasurable amount of his free time to find new and exciting activities for cadets, and to embrace new skills. He is a role model and inspiration to all around him.”

e are delighted to celebrate young London talent, and the live performances for this year’s Reflections of the Lord Mayor are a String Quartet from the Royal College of Music Junior Department (RCMJD). This talented quartet on violin, viola and cello will play Schubert Quartet in G major D. 887 – ii Andante un poco moto, and Mozart Divertimento no1 in D major K. 136 – i WAllegro, ii Andante, iii Presto. RCMJD offers advanced training at the highest level to young musicians aged eight to 18 years, providing individually-tailored programmes of one-to-one instrument/voice/composition lessons, supported by chamber music, orchestra, choir and musicianship classes. Exceptional tuition and high-profile performance opportunities – such as this evening’s performance – give outstanding students a valuable insight into the life of a professional musician. For the wider public, this is a unique opportunity to gain firsthand experience of some of the finest young musicians this country has to offer.

As well as regular concerts at the College, RCMJD students have appeared at many of London’s most prestigious venues and institutions. These include the Royal Albert Hall, Royal Festival Hall, Wigmore Hall, Cadogan Hall, St James’ Piccadilly, Sadler’s Wells Theatre, Westminster Abbey, The House of Lords and The Globe Theatre, together with a number of London’s Livery Halls including Saddler’s Hall and Carpenter’s Hall. Last December, an RCMJD string quartet performed for RCM President HRH The Prince of Wales at his Sandringham residence.

Students regularly feature in national and international competitions and the winners of the 2012, 2014 and 2016 BBC Young Musician were all RCMJD students. This year four students have reached the category finals, to be broadcast on the BBC later this month.

The Royal College of Music Junior Department is delighted to be providing musicians for the 2018 Reflections of The Lord Mayor event and look forward to an exciting collaboration, which will continue to 2019’s Reflections of the Lord Mayor.

The Lord Mountevans’ Reflections as 688th Lord Mayor of London 19 History of Reflections of The Lord Mayor

eflections of the Lord Mayor began in 2014, although the seeds of the idea were ‘germinated’ by event founder and organiser Chris Seow during his time as Chair of the City of London Branch of the Chartered Management Institute. There, he organised many ‘cross-pollination’ events – gatherings designed to bring together Racademics, business leaders and City Institutions. Chris says: “My original inspiration for the Reflections event was borne of a desire to celebrate the ancient office of Lord Mayor of London. To me, the mayoralty – with its ancient roots and modern- day relevance – captures a vital aspect of the City of London. Reflections is an opportunity to celebrate the office, the office holders, the spirit of continuity they bring and to reflect on all the elements that ensure the current and future success of the City as a vibrant community and a great place to do business.”

REFLECTIONS TIMELINE 2014 Sir David Wootton, 684th Lord Mayor of London (2011-12)

For the inaugural Reflections event, the keynote speaker was Sir David Wootton (a huge supporter of the event from the first ‘seeds’ of an idea). Sir David chose as his theme: “Jubilee, Olympics…and all that other stuff”. He outlined the biggest element of the role as business: acting as ambassador in the UK and around the world for the City’s financial and related professional services, but also being an ambassador for London and the rest of the UK. He reminded his audience that the City is also the largest promoter of the arts in the UK after the Arts Council and the BBC. David described a momentous year that began with Occupy at St Paul’s, on the route of the Lord Mayor’s Show, celebrated the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee, the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games and took him to 27 countries on five continents in promotion of the City and of the UK.

20 The Lord Mountevans’ Reflections as 688th Lord Mayor of London 2015 Dame Fiona Woolf, 686th Lord Mayor of London (2013-14)

Dame Fiona Woolf was Lord Mayor of the City of London from November 2013 to November 2014, promoting “Brand Britain” in 24 countries and receiving a huge number of inward visits. She chose as her Reflections theme “Lord Mayor in the ‘New Normal’”, describing how her ‘686 Plan’ sought to address the City’s strengths – an abundance of long-term financial capital and human capital – that can be used to optimise outcomes for “people, planet and profit”. She described what she learned along the way and what next steps should be, particularly in relation to the cultural changes that widen the talent pool. Fiona described how the Lord Mayor’s Appeal offers a wonderful platform and tools for better charity leadership and business involvement. She also explained why she regards the one-year tenure as one of the mayoralty’s greatest strengths – forcing the pace and the effort to hand over the role in good shape so that it can be even more effective in the future. 2016 Sir Alan Yarrow, 687th Lord Mayor of London (2014-15)

Sir Alan Yarrow was Lord Mayor from November 2014 to November 2015. Choosing as his theme “Marketing UK plc with Confidence, he described the role of Lord Mayor as a unique mix of history and modernity. He noted that the biggest element is business: acting as ambassador in the UK and around the world for the City and related financial and professional services. The Lord Mayor also supports education and the City as a centre of culture for all sectors of the UK economy. Sir Alan gave his observations on why we in the UK fail to market ourselves with confidence as the greatest international financial centre in the world. He also shared highlights from a year that celebrated the anniversaries of Magna Carta, the Mayoral Charter, Waterloo and Agincourt, and was notable

The Lord Mountevans’ Reflections as 688th Lord Mayor of London 21 for state visits of the Presidents of Mexico and China and a trade visit from the Prime Minister of India. During his year in office, Sir Alan also visited 28 countries on five continents. 2017 Sir Roger Gifford, 685th Lord Mayor of London (2012-13)

Sir Roger Gifford was Lord Mayor of the City of London from November 2012 to Novem- ber 2013, the 685th person to hold that of- fice in an unbroken sequence going back to 1189, and only the eighth Scotsman, as far as records can tell.

A banker by background, Roger emphasised the City’s prodigious work in society as a force for good during his time in office, both in terms of wealth creation and in the cre- ative arts which he promoted as a key part of the City’s philanthropic outreach initiatives.

As a musician, Roger – with his wife Clare – formed the City Music Foundation, as part of his Mayoral Appeal, to bring the concept of apprenticeships and business training to aspiring professional musicians and assist their professional development.

For his Reflections – “Whisky Galore at the Man- sion House” – Sir Roger shared experiences of a year that saw few anniversaries but many events. As Chair of the City of London Green Finance Ini- tiative, Sir Roger also provided a personal per- spective on the response from the City, Treasury and Department for Business, Energy & Industrial Strategy (BEIS), among others, to the growing need for carbon-reducing assets for investment.

There are over 10,000 restaurants offering Asian cuisine in the UK, and the Asian food sector is worth some £3 billion. For ambitious young chefs, there is probably no better sector in which to invest time and skills towards professional career.

To-date, over 100 student chefs with permanent residency in the UK have entered Zest Quest Asia, the culinary competition that aims to raise the profile of Asian cuisine as a career. Founded by Cyrus Todiwala OBE DL and Pervin Todiwala with the support of the Master Chefs of Great Britain, Zest Quest Asia has seen young people from the UK’s most prestigious catering colleges and universities compete for the distinction of having displayed the best knowledge and skills in Asian cuisine. Winners so far have enjoyed culinary tours to India, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Japan and now Vietnam.

Zest Quest Asia appreciates the support of The Lord Mayor’s Reflections, a new City tradition that shares our belief that education and training is the passport not just to a stronger industry and economy, but to a more cohesive society.

Shellfish Association of Great Britain, shellfish.org.uk Our Produce For the canapés reception we will be showcasing three iconic UK species:

Scottish Langoustines (Nephrops norvegicus) – These deliciously sweet little lobsters are trawl- caught in the Northern North Sea. Sometimes called the Dublin Bay prawn or Norway lobster – although more commonly recognised in the UK as scampi – the quality of meat is unsurpassed. Supplier: Jimmy Buchan, Amity Fish Company, Peterhead, amityfish.co.uk

Scottish King Scallops (Pecten maximus) – King scallops are caught by dredging or hand-diving. The sweet white meat is ideal for grilling or pan-frying and partners beautifully with pancetta or chorizo. Supplier: Jimmy Buchan, Amity Fish Company, Peterhead, www.amityfish.co.uk

Devon Brown crab (Cancer pagurus) – The common Edible or Brown crab, abounds in all UK waters and can be caught throughout most of the year. Highly prized in the export market, this iconic species is probably best known in domestic markets for its Cromer and Devon and Cornish provenance. Supplier: Trevor Bartlett, Blue Sea Crab Company, www.devoncrab.com
