Not so. They were taken eight years apart, a reminder that Bay and Hendry has had its share of upheaval over the last decade. The pre-hotel photo with the orange fencing was taken in June 2012, years before the Luminary was planned. It might seem like long-ago history, but think back to another massive construction project, the Downtown Fort Myers’ Riverfront Detention Basin Project, which is now adjacent to the hotel – its front entrance, so to speak. That Detention Basin Project had its grand opening in December 2012, and for a while, all was calm and settled at Bay and Hendry. Then came the plans for the Luminary, and it was back to the bulldozers and street closures – in the name of a good cause, of course. The photo of the 12-story, 237-room hotel was taken just two days after the Luminary’s ribbon-cutting, showing the new structure amid the last signs of construction to tidy up before the September 23 opening. Two days after the September 17 ribbon-cutting for the Luminary Hotel, the construction Now that the northwest quadrant of that intersection is emerging from its latest barriers were coming down again and the streets were open transformation and the hotel is a reality, it’s time to rejoice over the disappearance riverfront of the Caloosahatchee in the town’s early history, it flooded regularly of construction machinery and the reopening of streets. during the rainy season. And, it’s a good time to remember that the spot has always been vulnerable to In fact, the Bay-Hendry corner lay at the foot of the Hendry Street dock until major changes. After all, most of it was underwater a century ago. the late 1930s. In the early 20th century, it was the site of a wagon works/ To begin with, Bay Street’s name was no accident. Located along the original blacksmith shop. But even a century ago, fill projects had begun transforming the downtown riverfront. The first seawall had been built in 1908 and the first portion of Bay Street between 1908 and 1912 to improve the shabby waterfront. Thus, that wagon works was likely built on fill, just as the Luminary is today. When significant construction projects like the Basin or hotel come along, they seem more or less permanent from the short-sighted perspective of everyday life. People living in 1908 probably thought that new seawall would be there a good long time, and the people who used that former parking lot at Bay and Hendry probably didn’t expect it to vanish. But a historical perspective forces the question: How many years before someone is writing about the demolition and replacement of the Basin Project and hotel? Such is the flow of history. Learn more about the Bay and Hendry corner at the following research centers. Hours might be affected by the coronavirus pandemic, so call first. Matt Mitchell igns of fall, although very subtle, have begun. A couple of cooler, less humid Smornings were a nice break and a sure sign the oppressive heat of summer is just about over. Massive schools of bait can be found just about everywhere, both in the sound and out on the beaches. Our water has changed color due to the heavy rains we had a few weeks ago, along with releases from Lake O. Although this water is now tannic, it’s still clear and very healthy. These rains stained and cooled our waters, which turned on both the snook and redfish bite. Giant morning high tides this week were the perfect set up to target both these species on oyster bars throughout the sound. Fishing in an annual small cooperate tournament out of Captiva this week, our clients who usually do this trip in April, got to experience how good our fall fishing is. After fishing with this group for more than 10 years, they had the most exciting and productive trip ever. This slam tournament not only had lots of fish caught but also let them see how good Pine Island Sound can be. Fall tarpon fishing is in full swing with the best numbers being found out on the beaches. When you have a nice calm morning with light winds and slick water, ride the beaches looking for diving birds and bait. Go in quietly while keeping your eyes on the water for rolling fish. Some days, the signs are very subtle with fish gently raising up, while other days they can be seen crashing hatch bait. Cast live pinfish and crabs under a float out in front of them for the best results. While out running the beaches hunting tarpon, take a lighter rod and some smaller baits, and even some lures. Running into Spanish mackerel and bonita is always a possibility, as well as a tripletail. Quiet waterways and fabulous fishing are what fall is all about. Capt. Matt Mitchell has been fishing local waters since he moved to Sanibel in 1980. He now lives in St. James City and works as a back country fishing guide.
