Fox University of Missouri-Columbia Like many first-grade classrooms, mine was equipped with Gilbert Stuart's famous portrait of George Washington. Each day of the 1955 school year, we looked up at this framed print affixed to the front wall, high above the blackboard. Washingtonregal, pa- ternal, silverywatched over us. Like many images, this one was surrounded by words. Mrs. Pearl Snavely, our teacher, told us that Washington was the "father of our country." I had heard of Washington and Eisenhower ontelevision and radio. I was aware that they were great people. At Sunday School, I had also heard about "our Father in t.eaven." Since this portrait of Washington showed unmistakable white clouds billowing under him, I figured that the General was gazing down from heaven, or wherever it was that God lived. So, in my mind, during that year, the father of our country and our Father in heaven became the same person.Wash- ington was God, God was Wi:.,hington, and He was in charge. I don't remember how this matter ironed itself out. The biggest disappointment, though, came when I learned that Stuart didn't inten- tionally place Washington amidst fluffy clouds. In fact, he didn't place the General in heaven at all; Stuart simply never finished the painting. What I had taken to be the white, downy vapors of celestial perfection turned out to be blank canvas. Although I continue to make excursions into the bowels of verbal and visual illiteracy, I now know that presi- dents are human and that artists run out of time, energy, and even money to buy paint. Such misconceptions, of course, are a natural part of childhood. Yet my learning was also part of the discourse community of Mrs. Snavely's first-grade class, nestled within the larger community of Linden East Elementary School, north of Kansas City, Missouriall of which lay smack in the middle of Cold War America. Specific people took part in this learning: my teacher, my family, my classmates. The words they spoke and messages from television and radio were equally influential. But most important, then and now, was what 1 saw. 10 x Roy F. Fox Today our inner and outer worlds are dominated by images whether we receive them, send them, or think them; whether they happen inside our heads or outside our skin; whether we find them in proposals or poems, in casual conversations or environmental impact statements, in dreams or in ads for Dodge trucks or on computer screens, in films or scientific reports or Pepsi commercials. In this book, image (and imaging) refers to any form of mental, pictorial rep- resentation, however generic or fleeting. Images can be sensory expe- riences that exist only for us, with or without the actual stimuli present, or images can refer to actual pictures, from the simplest scrawl on a piece of paper to the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel. Images and imaging may involve the possible as much as the actual.

And then we shall have the leisure to take in the outlying islands and continents of the earth. We shall run the world's business whether the world likes it or not. The world can't help it - and neither can we, I guess.' Holroyd, the American industrialist in Joseph Conrad, Nostromo, 1904. 'Talk to me, General Schwartzkopf, tell me all about it.' Madonna, singing 'Diamonds are a Girl's Best Friend,' Academy Awards Show, 1991. There is chilling continuity in the culture of imperialism, just as there is in the lists of its massacres, its gross exploitations. It is there in the rhetoric of its apologists - from Manifest Destiny to Pax Britannica to the American Century and now the New World Order: global conquest and homogenisa- tion, epochal teleologies of the most 'inevitable' and determinist nature imaginable, the increasingly explicit authoritarianism of political dis- course, the tension between 'ultra-imperialism' and nationalism, both of the conquerors and the conquered. In this discussion, I would like to consider recent American films of the Reagan-Bush period which take imperialism as their narrative material - that is, America's place in the global system, its relations with diverse peoples and political forces, the kind of America and the kind of world which are at stake.

    Embedded Reporters: What Are Americans Getting? Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld has suggested we are getting only “slices” of the war. Other observers have likened the media coverage to seeing the battlefield through “a soda straw.” The battle for Iraq is war as we’ve never it seen before. It is the first full-scale American military engagement in the age of the Internet, multiple cable channels and a mixed media culture that has stretched the definition of journalism. The most noted characteristic of the media coverage so far, however, is the new system of “embedding” some 600 journalists with American and British troops. What are Americans getting on television from this “embedded” reporting? How close to the action are the “embeds” getting? Who are they talking to? What are they talking about? To provide some framework for the discussion, the Project for Excellence in Journalism conducted a content analysis of the embedded reports on television during three of the first six days of the war. The Project is affiliated with Columbia University and funded by the Pew Charitable Trusts. The embedded coverage, the research found, is largely anecdotal. It’s both exciting and dull, combat focused, and mostly live and unedited. Much of it lacks context but it is usually rich in detail. It has all the virtues and vices of reporting only what you can see.

    Film, Politics, and Ideology: Reflections on Hollywood Film in the Age of Reagan* Douglas Kellner (http://www.gseis.ucla.edu/faculty/kellner/) In our book Camera Politica: Politics and Ideology in Contemporary Hollywood Film (1988), Michael Ryan and I argue that Hollywood film from the 1960s to the present was closely connected with the political movements and struggles of the epoch. Our narrative maps the rise and decline of 60s radicalism; the failure of liberalism and rise of the New Right in the 1970s; and the triumph and hegemony of the Right in the 1980s. In our interpretation, many 1960s films transcoded the discourses of the anti-war, New Left student movements, as well as the feminist, black power, sexual liberationist, and countercultural movements, producing a new type of socially critical Hollywood film. Films, on this reading, transcode, that is to say, translate, representations, discourses, and myths of everyday life into specifically cinematic terms, as when Easy Rider translates and organizes the images, practices, and discourses of the 1960s counterculture into a cinematic text. Popular films intervene in the political struggles of the day, as when 1960s films advanced the agenda of the New Left and the counterculture. Films of the "New Hollywood," however, such as Bonnie and Clyde, Medium Cool, Easy Rider, etc., were contested by a resurgence of rightwing films during the same era (e.g. Dirty Harry, The French Connection, and any number of John Wayne films), leading us to conclude that Hollywood film, like U.S. society, should be seen as a contested terrain and that films can be interpreted as a struggle of representation over how to construct a social world and everyday life.
