The stellar 2010 season ended with a setback to #18 Coaching Experience Shepherd in the NCAA Quarterfi nals at Tullio Field in early December. • SUNY-Albany, 1983-84 Assistant Coach Nonetheless, senior wide receiver Trevor Kennedy and freshman running back • Arizona, 1984-86 Richie Sanders Jr. were among the 2011 top award-winners in the PSAC West. Graduate Assistant Coach For the second consecutive season, Kennedy was named the PSAC West Of- • Sonoma State, 1986-89 fensive Player of the Year, while Sanders earned PSAC West Freshman of the Year honors. Sanders becomes the fi rst player in Mercyhurst history (GLIAC or Offensive Coordinator/Offensive Line PSAC) to earn Freshman of the Year accolades. • Northern Arizona, 1989-90 Offensive Line Coach Kennedy was also an All-PSAC West First Team selection at both the wide • Shippensburg, 1990-97 receiver and return specialist positions, while Sanders also garnered First Team Offensive Coordinator/Offensive Line honors at running back. Offensive Coordinator/Tight Ends/Tackles • Mercyhurst, 2002-present Joining Kennedy and Sanders on the First Team were junior offensive tackle Head Coach Kevin Poropat and senior linebacker Ian Wild. Wild earned the honors despite missing the fi nal three games of the season due to a shoulder injury. Year-By-Year At Mercyhurst Earning Second Team accolades were sophomore fullback Jeff Groene, sopho- more center Steve Reinhardt, sophomore tight end R.J. Miller, sophomore nose Year Overall Conference guard Dustin Galich, and senior linebacker Kevin Williams. Wild also won the 2002 2-9 1-9 (GLIAC) PSAC Fall Top 10 Award and was named Mercyhurst’s Senior Male Student-Ath- 2003 5-6 4-6 (GLIAC) lete of the year. All told, 16 football players were named PSAC Scholar Athletes. 2004 4-7 4-6 (GLIAC) 2005 3-7 3-7 (GLIAC) Additionally, Kennedy, who had arguably the best offensive season in the history 2006 3-7 3-7 (GLIAC) of the program in 2011, was honored with the school’s fi rst ever American Foot- 2007 4-7 3-7 (GLIAC) ball Coaches’ Association (AFCA) All-American award. He was awarded a spot 2008 7-4 5-2 (PSAC) on the First Team, in addition to numerous other postseason accolades. 2009 4-7 3-4 (PSAC) 2010 10-3 6-1 (PSAC) Since Mercyhurst moved to the PSAC in 2008, ending a 13-year affi liation with 2011 4-7 2-5 (PSAC) the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC), Schaetzle and TOTAL 46-64 34-54 the Lakers have posted a 25-21 overall record and a 16-12 mark in the PSAC Western Division.

Schaetzle has surpassed current Director of Athletics Joe Kimball as the longest tenured football coach in program history and his 46 wins are the most ever by a Mercyhurst football coach. Two years ago, Schaetzle broke a victories’ tie with Kimball and Tony DeMeo, the program’s fi rst-ever coach, by capturing win #42 with a 28-14 win over Bloomsburg. For his efforts in 2010, Schaetzle was named PSAC Coach of the Year, Don Hansen Football Gazette co-Coach of the Year, and a top fi ve fi nalist for the Liberty Mutual Coach of the Year. His 2010 squad was also named the Division II Lambert Meadowlands and ECAC Teams of the Year.

As an offensive lineman, Schaetzle was Bucknell’s team captain in 1982 and graduated from there in 1983. He won the George Rieu Award as the Bison’s outstanding lineman in 1981 and 1982. He also won the 1983 Edward Pangburn Award, given to a senior athlete for “sportsmanship, fellowship, and contribution to the university.” Schaetzle played high school football at St. Francis Prep for Vinny O’Connor. He is a member of the Coaches Association and also serves on a professional development committee.

Schaetzle is married to Jean Ann and the couple has two sons, Thurman and Griffi n, and two daughters, Courdell and Kendal.

Gutowski played collegiate football for one year at Northern Illinois, lettering as a freshman walk-on after playing wide receiver and special teams in nine games for the Huskies. He then went on to Indiana where he would earn a bachelor of science in exercise science in 2003. Additionally, he received a post-graduate business certifi cate from Mercyhurst College.

Gutowski is the son of Laurie and Dennis and has two siblings named Tim and Jamie.
