Outline of angiosperm phylogeny: orders, families, and representative genera with emphasis on Oregon native plants Priscilla Spears December 2013 The following listing gives an introduction to the phylogenetic classification of the flowering plants that has emerged in recent decades, and which is based on nucleic acid sequences as well as morphological and developmental data. This listing emphasizes temperate families of the Northern Hemisphere and is meant as an overview with examples of Oregon native plants. It includes many exotic genera that are grown in Oregon as ornamentals plus other plants of interest worldwide. The genera that are Oregon natives are printed in a blue font. Genera that are exotics are shown in black, however genera in blue may also contain non-native species. Names separated by a slash are alternatives or else the nomenclature is in flux. When several genera have the same common name, the names are separated by commas. The order of the family names is from the linear listing of families in the APG III report. For further information, see the references on the last page. CHAPTER 1 THE CALIFORNIA FLORA The Californian Floristic Province California is a large state with a complex topography and a great diversity of climates and habitats,resulting in a very large assemblage of plant species that vary in size and include both the world’s largest trees and some of the smallest and most unique plant species. In order to create manageable units for plant investigations, botanists have divided the continental landform into geographic units called floristic provinces. These units reflect the wide variations in natural landscapes and assist botanists in predicting where a given plant might be found. Within the borders of California, there are three floristic provinces, each extending beyond the state’s political boundaries. The California Floristic Province includes the geographi- cal area that contains assemblages of plant species that are more or less characteristic of California and that are best de- veloped in the state.This province includes southwestern Ore- gon and northern Baja California but excludes certain areas of the southeastern California desert regions, as well as the area of the state that is east of the Sierra Nevada–Cascade Range axis (map 1).The flora of the desert areas and those east of the Sierra Nevada crest are best developed outside the state, and therefore, parts of the state of California are not in the Cali- fornia Floristic Province. The Great Basin Floristic Province includes some of the area east of the Sierra Nevada and some regions in the northeastern part of the state, although some botanists consider the latter area to belong to another distinct floristic province, the Columbia Plateau Floristic Province. -

1937 171 Chromosome Numbers in the Polemoniaceae By Walter S. Flory Division of Horticulture, Texas Agricultural Experiment Station This family is divided by systematists into two subfamilies. Cobaeoideae is composed of the genera Cantua, Huthia, and Cobaea which are tall shrubs, trees, or vines. The approximately fourteen other (herbaceous or low shrubby) genera comprise the subfamily Polemonioideae. From the standpoint of number of included species the most important of these latter genera are Gilia, Phlox, Polemo nium, and Collomia. The genera Phlox and Polemonium are each quite distinct and their species are seldom confused with those of other genera, but the remaining twelve genera of this subfamily apparently do not have taxonomic boundaries of equivalent distinctness. Certain species have been placed in one genus by one author, and in one or more different genera by others. The genus Gilia has been ex tended by some writers to include practically all species of the Polemonioideae outside of the genera Phlox and Polemonium. This was first pointed out to me by Professor Edgar T. Wherry who is making a taxonomic and geographic study of the Polemoniaceae, and was increasingly emphasized as literature sources and herbarium specimens were consulted and examined. It has been the purpose of the work herein presented to secure data on all obtainable polemoniaceous species with respect to chro mosome numbers, size, and general morphology. Especial attention has been given to securing information of significance from a taxono mic standpoint. Since several factors combine to make the immedi ate completion of the original program impossible it seems desirable, meanwhile, to present the accumulated data, together with suggested conclusions. -

In the present work, the morphological characters, stem, petiole and leaf anatomy, pollen micromorphology of Endemic Bellis sylvestrisvar. cyrenaicafrom Libya have been investigated on light and scanning electron microscope. Bellis sylvestrisvar. cyrenaicais an endemic species from Libya and limited information about the native taxon. All morphological, anatomical and palynological characteristics are firstly determined in this study. Palynology study showed that pollen characters were found medium size, oblate spheroidal, tricolporate and echinate ornamentation of the studied taxon. Rabeler University of Michigan Herbarium 3600 Varsity Drive Ann Arbor, MI 48108-2228 Edward Groesbec k Voss (Fig. 1), Professor and Curator Emeritus at the Uni - versity of Michigan Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology and Uni - versity of Michigan Herbarium, died on February 13, 2012 at his home in Ann Arbor, after a brief illness. He was born on February 22, 1929 in Delaware, Ohio. Ed’s abilities were clear early in his life. He attended Woodward High School in Toledo, Ohio. He received the Achievement Award as the outstanding senior in his 1946 high school class, and was later elected to the Woodward High Hall of Fame. He then graduated with a bachelor’s degree with honors from Denison University (1950); his undergraduate honors thesis, On the classifica - tion of the Hesperiidae , became a significant paper on Lepidoptera (Voss 1952). He completed his education with a master’s in Biology (1951) and a doctoral de - gree in Botany (1954), both from the University of Michigan working with Rogers McVaugh. He was awarded an honorary Doctor of Science from Denison University in 2003. In 1956, he began his long association with the University of Michigan and Michigan’s flora when he was appointed as a research associate at the Herbar - ium, beginning what was expected to be a five-year project to document the flora of Michigan. He joined the Botany faculty in 1960 as assistant professor and was promoted to associate professor (1963), and later, professor (1969). -

The intent was to depict and describe over 400 common, conspicuous or beautiful species. In this revision we have tried to maintain the intent and integrity of the original. Scientific names have been updated in accordance with changes in taxonomic thought since the time of the first printing. Some changes have been incorporated in order to make the manual more user-friendly for the beginner. The species are now organized primarily by floral color.
