Rekha returns with Ajna Dance, and then Jain’s band Red Baraat, which “plays rollicking funk music steeped in Northern India's wedding celebrations, with a dash of D.C. go-go beats and hip-hop,” (NPR) arrives for a Prospect Park-shaking closing set featuring guest appearances by the M.C. Exceptional writing abounds on this triple bill: the soulful vocalist Martha Redbone adapts William Blake’s poetry in her new project The Garden of Love, and Birds of Chicago, led by husband and wife JT Nero and Allison Russell, reflect on “the intense, freewheeling, all-too-fleeting attachments of youth” (NPR) with wistful, meditative lyrics, and luminous harmonies. LAMC returns to the Bandshell with a bang with Mexico City’s Carla Morrison, whose voice “has the desperate grandeur associated with Robert Smith or Björk…(she’s) a doomed, spectral torch singer, incandescent with longing, desire, and grief.” (New Yorker) The bluesy Americana of Hurray for the Riff Raff, led by Puerto Rican-American singer Alynda Lee Segarra, “sweeps across eras and genres with grace and grit;” (NPR) Brooklyn’s own Buscabulla rounds out this diverse showcase with a set of electro-psych pop. Presented in association with the Latin Alternative Music Conference. Gates open an hour before the performance unless otherwise noted, and all performances are rain or shine. • Peace of Mind — First Ever Album to Be Released As a Podcast
PEACE OF MIND — FIRST EVER ALBUM TO BE RELEASED AS A PODCAST Song Exploder meets Pod Save America in this innovative new release from musician Bhi Bhiman. Guests include Dave Eggers, religious scholar Reza Aslan, attorney Rabia Chaudry (Serial & Undisclosed), Snap Judgement’s Glynn Washington, attorney Dale Ho (Director, ACLU Voting Rights Project), musician Gaby Moreno, filmmaker and co-founder of the Women’s March Paola Mendoza and many more. Peace of Mind is a soundtrack to this crazy time in America. Each of the eight songs has a different theme — like immigration, voter suppression, mental health, etc. And Bhi didn’t want to just release them into the album-cycle ether. So, he and the team at Critical Frequency have packaged these songs, one per episode, into what plays like a half-hour radio show w/ conversations, storytelling and cool sound design (comprised entirely of the stems for that song). At the end, Bhi shares the full song and the story behind it. Podcast trailer, album tracks, etc: peaceofmindpod.com/media *New episodes drop every Friday beginning Jan 25th on all podcast platforms and Bhi’s website. *The individual songs will simultaneously be available for streaming and download on all DSPs. About Bhi Bhiman Bhi Bhiman is an American recording artist and producer. Bhi’s had critical acclaim, toured w/ some of his musical heroes and collaborated w/ creative powerhouses like Boots Riley, Chris Cornell, Rhiannon Giddens, and comedic actor Keegan-Michael Key. And yet, he’s never been approached by a label. So to cut through the noise, Bhi has thoughtfully reimagined the modern album as a society & culture podcast.

  • Meshell Ndegeocello Bio for New Album, Comet, Come to Me (June 3 Release on Naive Records)
Meshell Ndegeocello Bio For new album, Comet, Come to Me (June 3 release on Naive Records) Mercurial and masterful, Meshell Ndegeocello has survived the best and worst of what a career in music has to offer. She has eschewed genre for originality, celebrity for longevity, and musicals trends for musical truths. She has lived through the boom and bust of the industry and emerged just as she entered - unequivocally herself. Fans have come to expect the unexpected from Meshell, and faithfully followed her on sojourns into soul, spoken word, R&B, jazz, hip-hop, rock, all bound by a lyrical, spiritual search for love, justice, respect, resolution, and happiness. Groove driven, infectiously melodic and lyrically meditative, Meshell’s latest album, Comet, Come To Me, finds her returning to the same well of creativity that launched her career. Her 11th release, it is possibly a culmination of all previous work: lush, vocal, seeking, wise, collaborative, and driven by the signature bounce and precise pocket of Ndegeocello on bass. The album features special guests Shara Worden (My Brightest Diamond) and Doyle Bramhall, along with long-time collaborators Christopher Bruce (guitar) and Jebin Bruni (keys), and Earl Harvin on drums. Assured of her place as an authentic musical thinker and an uncompromising artist, Comet continues to discover, examine, and explore all that music has to offer her and how she can return the gift. “Comet, Come To Me was a little labor but a lot of love. It was made with my favorite collaborators, and it felt good to channel the sounds in my mind after having Nina in residence for a while,” ” says Meshell, referencing her last album, a tribute to Nina Simone.

Smith 3 Welcome Back What a time it has been! Our world has experienced unprecedented disruption since we last gathered in the spring of 2020 in our beautiful venues to witness exquisite music, dance, and theatre together. Throughout these many long and painful months of separation and isolation, I have been yearning for the time when we can be together once again. It appears that time is finally now upon us! I am absolutely thrilled to share our plans for celebrating the University of Georgia Performing Arts Center’s historic 25th anniversary season throughout the fall of 2021 and spring of 2022. Our silver anniversary season will feature a variety of acclaimed guest artists—some new to us and some returning favorites—with an equally wide variety of personal life experiences. They will come to us from across the United States and several different countries. Their experiences inform their work, and we will, for a brief moment in time, commune together as the universal languages of music, spoken word, and movement unite us in hope and healing. Not only has the world changed significantly since we first opened our doors 25 years ago, it has changed dramatically in the last year as we have endured the devastating impact of a global pandemic, social injustice, political uncertainty, and any number of other things.
