Cloudy skies today; scattered rains likely DOHA: The weather would be cloudy today with chances of scattered rains, the weather bureau said yesterday. The wind direction inland would be northwesterly to northeasterly, and off- shore the wind direction would be north- westerly. Wind speed inland is forecast to be between five and 15 knots, while at sea the speed may increase up to 15 and 18 knots, particularly in the north. “We are expecting scattered rains tomorrow. The weather is likely to be partly cloudy to cloudy, similar to what has been experienced since this morning,” a forecaster told The Peninsula last evening. Day temperatures are likely to range between 18 degrees Celsius (in Abu Samra) to 21 degrees in Doha. Places like Al Khor and Ruwais are expected to record the second highest temperature at 20 degrees. Abandoned cars to be towed away DOHA: The Ministry of Municipality and Urban Planning has launched a drive to remove abandoned cars and machinery from footpaths in Doha Al Haditha (Modern Doha). Stickers warning that the vehicles would be removed have been pasted on at least five abandoned cars so far. Civic inspectors of the Ministry of Municipality recently started pasting such stickers on vehicles parked on footpaths. Jassem Al Maliki, a member of the civic body from Doha Al Haditha had requested to the ministry to ban parking of cars and VANISHING equipment on footpaths in his constitu- ency, Al Arab reports. The ministry replied that the depart- ment concerned had been mobilised to launch an operation to remove the vehicles. DOHA: Dutch rider Kirsten Wild yesterday added charm to her legend ‘Desert Queen’ by winning the Ladies Tour of Qatar for the fourth time in the event’s six-year history. The tall Giant-Shimano rider yesterday won the fourth and final stage ahead of double world champion Giorgia Bronzini of Italy and dashing young rider Melissa Hoskins of Australia to wrap up her Doha visit on yet another impressive note. The 31-year-old, winner in Doha in 2009, 2012 and 2013, successfully defended her title with a sublime finish at Corniche in extremely chilly conditions sweeping the Qatari capital. Dominant right throughout the four-day event, Wild has now won an astonishing nine stages in Qatar. AUGUSTA: Tiger Woods says he will play three events in Florida as he gears up for the April 10-13 Masters, the year’s opening major, and will skip the upcoming WGC-Accenture Match Play Championship in Arizona as had been expected. The American world number one has competed in only two tournaments this year, the PGA Tour’s Farmers Insurance Open and the European Tour’s Dubai Desert Classic, and will next be in action at the February 27-March 2 Honda Classic in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida. After that, he will defend his titles at the March 6-9 WGC- Cadillac Championship in Miami and the March 20-23 Arnold Palmer Invitational in Orlando. “The Honda Classic is close to my home, and I want to support it whenever I can,” 14-times major winner Woods said on his official website yesterday. “I’m also excited about spend- ing time with Arnold and defend- ing my title at his tournament and the WGC-Cadillac.” Though Woods is a three- time winner of the February Qatar Handball Federation (QHF) officials are seen with national team players and back-room staff members after they returned from Bahrain where Qatar won the Asian Handball 19-23 Accenture Match Play Championship on Thursday.
