Senator John McCain was dead of brain cancer at age 81. I was not a close friend, but I worked for him for the better part of four years when he ran for president in 2000 and 2008. Relax. This is not a political perspective. It’s about Veterans and who, half a century ago, were shot down and imprisoned. They were tortured unmercifully. Some died. The Vietnamese captors did not adhere to the Geneva Conventions that established the standards of international law for humanitarian treatment of prisoners in war. Despite this, the POW’s followed the Code of Conduct that provided guidance for the behavior of soldiers even in the event they are captured. They followed the same OFFICERS, BOARD, AND CHAIRS chain of command they had when they took off from an air base in Vietnam or lifted off PRESIDENT:Cpt Charles McDougald USA 415-722-1009 from the deck of an aircraft carrier. This discipline carried them through the worst of 1st VP: LDCR J.C. Swindle headed the Veterans group that supported both runs for Treasurer: CAPT Keith Ott USN 530-219-2404 president. He was shot down November 11, 1966. Senator McCain joined him at the Past President: CAPT Gil Borgardt USN Hanoi Hilton on October 26, 1967. Colonel Bob Stirm joined them both a day later, on 650-342-1270 October 27, 1967. I saw a lot of these three during the two presidential campaigns. DIRECTORS & COMMITTEE CHAIRS CALMOAA When Stirm came home in 1973, a photographer snapped a photo of his CAPT Gil Borgardt USN 650-342-1270 daughter running toward him screaming with glee and her arms opened wide. That Chaplain Col Don Bradley USAF 650-592-0915 photo, entitled Burst of Joy, won the Pulitzer Price the following year. At one event, Chapter Outreach Stirm was asked to lead us in the Pledge of Allegiance. He said that, while a prisoner, CWO5 Robert Landgraf USMC 408-323-8838 Commissary/Exchange Advisory every day every prisoner recited that Pledge out loud, whether he was standing up or CDR Ralph Hunt USN 650-967-8467 Friends-in-Need (FIN) Program lying down, whether he was with a group or alone. He could CAPT John Hassenplug, USN 650-224-7638 Personal Affairs tell that, because of his size, the diminutive Vietnamese were scared of him. Through CAPT Robert French USN 650-549-8896 Programs sheer force of personality - and a lot of guile – he managed to convince some of his CDR Ralph Hunt USN 650-967-8467 jailers that November 10 was National Donut Day. His program portfolios have included: STANDARD Anti-Aircraft missiles, the associated Mk 41 Vertical Launching System, the AN/SQQ-89 Anti-Submarine Warfare Suite, the Mk54 Lightweight Torpedo, the AN/SPY Morgan Hill Cellars Gift Shop -1 radar system, and various aspects of the Littoral Combat Ship program. Without delay Lt. Col. Mike Sampognaro, winery owner and operator along with his wife Maryclaire, assembled a tour group of perhaps two dozen people and moved to the product delivery and outdoor storage area. He provided some interesting facts about grapes and wine-making noting for example that the same red grapes can produce red Zinfandel and White Zinfandel based on how long you leave the grape juice and the skins together. He told how in the mid-1990s a fire erupted on the property and the fire department personnel responded quickly, set the hoses, and promptly sat down. Alcohol floats on water, so any burning alcohol will simply spread if you put water on it; however, they were not aware that the wine does not have enough alcohol to burn. Wine could actually be used to put out fires. Later the gift shop and other parts of the building were rebuilt and today they are more beautiful than ever. CAPT Al Serafini, USN (RET) Al was well known to many chapter members as a tireless volunteer working at the Moffett Federal Airfield Retiree Affairs Office. He passed away peacefully on December 8, 2017 surrounded by his family, after a courageous battle with cancer. He was a man of great vitality, integrity and honor. He will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him. Born in Steubenville, Ohio, Al received his Bachelor's degree in Business Administration from Arizona State University in 1958 and his MBA from Pepperdine University in 1979.
