Celebrating Years of Music A Serenade to Music “We are the music-makers And we are the dreamers of dreams…” (Arthur William Edgar O’Shaughnessy, Ode) The story of BBC Northern Ireland’s involvement in nurturing and broadcasting local musical talent is still in the making. This exhibition provides a revealing glimpse of work in progress at the BBC’s Community Archive in documenting the programmes and personalities who have brought music in all its different forms to life, and looks at how today’s broadcasters are responding to the musical styles and opportunities of a new century. It celebrates BBC NI’s role in supporting musical diversity and creative excellence and reflects changes in fashion, technology and society across 80 years of local broadcasting. “ Let us celebrate the way we were and the way we live now. Much has been achieved since 2BE’s first faltering (and scarcely heard) musical broadcast in 1924. Innovation has Let us celebrate the ways we will be... been a defining feature of every decade from early radio concerts in regional towns and country halls to the pioneering work of Sean O’Boyle in recording traditional music and Sam Hanna Bell’s 1950s programmes of Belfast’s Let us count the ways to celebrate. street songs. The broadcasts of the BBC Wireless Orchestra and its successors find their contemporary echo in the world-class performances of the Ulster Orchestra and BBC NI’s radio and television schedules continue to Let us celebrate.” reverberate to the diverse sounds of local jazz, traditional and country music, religious services, brass bands, choirs, (Roger McGough - Poems of Celebration) contemporary rock, pop and dance music.

  • Dana Rosemary Scallon. by Philip O’ Callaghan
Dana Rosemary Scallon. By Philip O’ Callaghan. Dana Rosemary Scallon (born Rosemary Brown on 30 August 1951) is better known simply as Dana, an Irish singer and former politician. Her career began when, as an A-level student, she won the 1970 Eurovision Song Contest with \"All Kinds of Everything\", a subsequent worldwide million-seller. Over thirty singles and thirty albums later, Dana's career continues, now also as a leading songwriter and performer of Catholic music – like \"The Rosary\" album, another worldwide million- seller. The singer became a popular pantomime princess – her portrayal of Snow White was so successful it lasted fourteen years, including an extended season in the West End of London. Her talent for charming the children was recognised when she was chosen to star in three Children's Royal Variety Shows. Within two years this surprising newcomer to politics had become an MEP – Connaught-Ulster's first female member of the European Parliament. DUBLIN -- Former Eurovision Song Contest winner Dana Rosemary Scallon has announced she's running to be Ireland's next president. Scallon joins a crowded field of candidates to become Ireland's ceremonial head of state in the Oct. 27 election. Others in the race include former government arts minister Michael D. Higgins and former IRA commander Martin McGuinness. The 60-year-old Scallon is known universally in Ireland by her stage name, Dana, following her 1970 Eurovision win for the ballad "All Kinds of Everything." Scallon is a Catholic conservative and a critic of European Union integration. She ran unsuccessfully for the presidency in 1997, finishing third.

  • Eurovision Song Contest: the Story by Nathaly Schwarm-Bronson
Back Eurovision Song Contest: the Story by Nathaly Schwarm-Bronson In the mid-1950s the members of the European Broadcasting Union set up an ad hoc committee to investigate ways of rallying the countries of Europe round a light entertainment programme. At Monaco in late January 1955 this committee, chaired by Marcel Bezençon, Director General of Swiss Television, came up with the idea of creating a song contest, inspired by the very popular San Remo Festival. The idea was approved by the EBU General Assembly in Rome on 19 October 1955 and it was decided that the first “Eurovision Grand Prix” – so baptized, incidentally, by a British journalist – would take place in spring 1956 at Lugano, Switzerland. The next step was to put together a set of rules to be followed by the participants, of which there were originally ten, although only seven countries were eventually allowed to take part: Belgium, France, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Switzerland and West Germany. The other three countries – Austria, Denmark and United Kingdom – registered after the official deadline and were thus disqualified from entering the contest. The rules of the first contest allowed the participants to enter a maximum of two songs each, and it was strongly recommended that the songs be selected at a national final involving the participation of the public, to render the contest as popular as possible. There was no rule on language, each participant being entitled to choose the language in which they wished to perform. There was, however, a rule on the amount of time allowed: three and a half minutes was the maximum for each performance.

Fifty-four years after Germany played host to the second ever Eurovision Song Contest, the musical jamboree comes to Düsseldorf this May. It’s a very different world since ARD staged the show in 1957 with just 10 nations in a small TV studio in Frankfurt. This year, a record 43 countries will take part in the three shows, with a potential audience of 35,000 live in the Esprit Arena. All 10 nations from 1957 will be on show in Germany, but only two of their languages survive. The creaky phone lines that provided the results from the 100 judges have been superseded by state of the art, pan-continental technology that involves all the 125 million viewers watching at home. It’s a very different show indeed. Back in 1957, Lys Assia attempted to defend her Eurovision crown and this year Germany’s Lena will become the third artist taking a crack at the same challenge.

  • The Eurovision Years
THE EUROVISION YEARS The North West’s love affair with the Eurovision Song Contest began in Vienna, Austria, in 1967 when Phil Coulter, with his writing partner Scot Bill Martin, composed Puppet on a String for Sandy Shaw. The song won and the local connection with the contest began. The following year they nearly completed the double when, at the Royal Albert Hall in London, Cliff Richard performed their latest composition Congratulations. Unfortunately, the song came second, but both songs went on to sell millions of records worldwide. In Amsterdam in 1970, a local girl called Rosemary Brown, better known as Dana, won the Eurovision with All Kinds of Everything. The Phil Coulter song was arranged by Phil Coulter and went on to be a number one hit all over Europe. Charlie Sherrard and Josef Locke were two great Irish tenors of their era. Charlie was born and raised in William Street, Sandi Shaw a stone’s throw from Thundering Down, the street where Josef Locke was born and raised as Joseph McLaughlin. Charlie’s son, Sean Sherrard, followed in his father’s footsteps. Sean took the stage name Johnny Logan and in 1980 composer Shay Healey wrote What’s Another Year which Johnny performed in The Hague in the Netherlands. The song went on to win and launched Johnny Logan onto the international music scene. The following year the contest was held in Dublin and the group Sheeba represented Ireland. Local girl Frances Campbell was a member of the all- girl trio. Sheeba came fifth that year, finishing behind Bucks Fizz who won Dana with Making Your Mind Up.
