    For such a calm area in the world, the state of West Virginia has been the source of many engineering achievements and feats. Granted, very little of them were impactful on the world as a whole, but when you learn about some of these, it can appear very impressive. There is the WVU Coliseum, which is designed to be capable of being transformed to be used for various sports and entertainment events, or the flood control dams built to protect parts of the land from being overflown with water. However, one certain construct has also made a different kind of change on the state and the country. It simplified travel for many land travelers, and it did that very effectively. The contruction of the New River Gorge Bridge was a big moment for anyone who needed to cross the New River going from north to south within West Virginia. Before the bridge’s construction, anyone who lived even remotely from the New River Gorge could describe how hard it was to navigate around. It was about 360 miles long, and even though there were bridges that went over the New River, the closest one was usually 45 minutes away by car. You had to travel long precarious switchbacks down into the gorge, or travel long distances up or down the river. This river gorge caused many problems in the surrounding communities, so they eventually created a solution: a bridge would be constructed at what was likely the most disruptive spot in the river, designed to carry many cars across gap that was 3,030 feet long and 876 feet tall.

    “I Don’t Want to Die, But I Accept That it Can Happen”: Taking Risks and Doing Gender Among BASE Jumpers by CAITLIN ANDREA FORSEY B.A. (Honours), University of Winnipeg, 2007 A THESIS SUBMITTED IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF MASTER OF ARTS in THE FACULTY OF GRADUATE STUDIES (Sociology) THE UNIVERSITY OF BRITISH COLUMBIA (Vancouver) August 2009 © Caitlin Andrea Forsey 2009 Abstract Using ethnographic data generated through semi-structured interviews with 16 male BASE jumpers, observations of over 1000 BASE jumps (parachuting from fixed objects such as Buildings, Antennas, Spans and Earth), and textual analyses of BASE-related websites, images, and publications, this research provides a sociocultural analysis of the relationship between masculinity and voluntary risk-taking. Drawing on wider debates about modernization, individualization, technology, gender relations, embodiment, and the sociology of the everyday, I illustrate the multifaceted nature of this phenomenon, in addition to the advantages of using a theoretically diverse approach. I link the emergence of BASE jumping in contemporary Western society to military history and the synthesis of two extreme sports, namely, bungee jumping and skydiving. I explore the practices, ethics, technologies, and mentoring styles specific to the practice, with the goal of demonstrating how BASE jumping integrates individuals into social groups. An analysis of the gender regime operating within the BASE community reveals tensions between engagement in the practice and issues of responsibility related to fatherhood, marriage, and other intimate relations. My findings further suggest BASE jumping provides a forum for learning, practicing, and perfecting valued skills within the localized field of the BASE community, in addition to other spheres of personal and professional life.

Mony was a 28-year- old, female, childless, unmarried-and-still-very-much-single Cambodian American. They both lived and worked in Charlotte. A 30-year-old Filipina named Lucinda, who was an acquaintance of both, was the matchmaker. After Kye and Mony had a few weekend coffees and a lunch together in the early fall of 2006, they decided to have their first all- day date at the New River Gorge festival known as Bridge Day in southern West Virginia. On a clear-as-a-sleep-rubbed-off-eye-can-see, refreshingly- brisk-after-a-long-hot-humid-summer, blue-skied Saturday morning, the 21st of October, Kye picked up Mony from her Northlake-area apartment in his black 2002 Toyota Camry. It was 7:49 on the digital dashboard clock when he inserted the Natural Calamity CD (compact disc) after entering the rightmost lane of northbound Interstate 77. “Well, Mony, we’ve got two hundred nineteen miles [352 km] to go,” Kye informed.     Exploring the Motivations of BASE Jumpers: Extreme Sport Enthusiasts Tara L. Allman, Robin D. Mittelstaedt, Bruce Martin & Marni Goldenberg Little previous research has been conducted exploring the motivational factors that influence a person’s desire to participate in extreme sports. The researchers used a means-end approach (e.g. semi-structured interviews) to explore motivations for participation in the extreme sport of BASE jumping. BASE jumping is the activity of parachuting from bridges, buildings, antennas, and cliffs, in which participants have been identified as voluntary-risk takers. The results indicated that BASE jumpers deliberately took risks as a means of becoming positively transformed, which was essential to their quality of life. The study findings hold important implications for researchers interested in further studies of extreme subcultures as well as practitioners interested in developing adventure tourism opportunities targeted toward extreme subcultures. Background The motivational factors that influence a person’s desire to participate in extreme sports have not yet been identified. Lyng (1990) acknowledged that we do not fully understand what motivates individuals to partake in high-risk behavior. Lupton & Tulloch (2002) have echoed this concern by recognizing that little empirical research has strived to examine the meanings attributed to high-risk behavior. Previous research has focused on some high-risk subcultures, but not on extreme sport subcul­ tures (Katz, 1988; Lois, 2005; Lyng & Snow, 1986; Lyng, 1990). For instance, Lyng (1990) re-analyzed a 5-year ethnographic study of skydivers (Lyng & Snow, 1986), operationalizing the concept of edgework. The question has been explored to a lesser extent within the context of involvement in extreme sport subcultures.

Both rappelling and BASE jumping require skill, experience, and equipment. The first New River Gorge Bridge High Line was in 1994. In 2001, when Bridge Day was cancelled, there was a 2,200’ high line rigged near the New River Gorge Bridge that extended across the New River th Gorge. This will be the 19 ​ Bridge Day High Line with over 2,200 riders. ​ The high line rider will glide from the New River Gorge Bridge’s catwalk to State Route 82. Your speed will be controlled by a belayer. You will drop 300 vertical feet while sliding 600-700’. 1. There are limited spaces and registration can be closed at a moment’s notice. 2.
