Description: The intrigue and royal conspiracy in the Bard’s Richard III is given a dark twist that will appeal to aficionados of both comics and the classics.Richard, the ambitious third son of the , believes he is cursed, damned from birth to eternal darkness. But is it truly fate that sets him on the path to personal destruction? Or his own tormented longings? Based on an early draft of Shakespeare’s Richard III, Aya Kanno’s dark fantasy finds the man who could be king standing between worlds, between classes, between good and evil.Ten years after the king’s death, things have changed for Richard. His feud with his sibling has deepened, and the witch Jane tempts the new king with her mysterious charms. In this swirl of human desire, Richard reaches toward his own future and rises again in defense of the York family!

I loved vol. 1 also (see my Amazon review of vol 1, Japanese Variation on the Ricardian Fantasy). Vol. 2 reaches the same high imaginative standard. As the other reviewers note, it is essential to know the basics about the . Second, you must some idea of Shakespeares construction of Richards character in the plays 2 Henry VI, 3 Henry VI, and Richard III, since Ms Kanno is doing a riff or variations on that theme: of a Richard who causes horror at birth, and who is prophesied to bring woe, death and darkness. Reading Requiem sent me back to the Shakespeare plays, and certain lines Shakespeare puts in Richards mouth acquire new resonances: her reworking of Shakespeare is subtle and in no way crude, and she deserves much praise for it. Her drawings are great, and the atmosphere of brooding darkness and violence is marvelously evoked. Relative to the Wars of the Roses, she is actually moving quite slowly; at the end of volume 2, Edward IV has just fallen under the spell of , so she is barely half-way into 3 Henry VI. But Im also delighted she is moving slowly, since that means more treats in the future: and, if one knows the historical background, what she gives us never drags.)In this volume, she does a magnificent job of the abandoned Richards flight to York, his near-rape on the way, culminating in his encounter with the head of his father the Duke of York on the battlements of York. Very powerful. The second episode I was taken by was where Richard, now tormented by seemingly unquenchable lust for blood to avenge the death of his father, the only one who ever loved or accepted him, becomes a wraith-like monstrous slayer at the Battle of Towton in 1461, the bloodiest battle ever fought on English soil. Third: the sexual elements are well done, with a light hand, and intriguing. There are unmistakably feminine aspects to her Richard (as the drawings show well) - and at the same time he is in no way effeminate. In that context, one of the few amusing moments is when the Lancastrian Prince Edward is told by his mother, Queen Marguerite dAnjou, that he may be married to one of the York females after all the males have been slaughtered; the look of horror on his face is quite something. I wont spoil it by revealing why he is horrified. To sum up: Aya Kanno is weaving together all of the main elements of Shakespeares Richard-story, in ways that are intelligent and very imaginative - admittedly not everybody will like the end result. Nevertheless, she is taking one who is a kind of monster, and portraying his inner life in ways that, if not actually arousing our sympathy, fascinate and draw us into his strange world.
