UUNET Advantage

Founded in 1987, UUNET®, an MCI WorldCom Company, is recognized as the first commercial Internet Service Provider exclusively dedicated to the needs of business. Since its inception, UUNET’s network has grown dramatically and, today, is the world’s most extensive TCP/IP infrastructure providing Internet access throughout the world. In the process of providing its Internet services, UUNET has amassed substantial experience in the design, deployment, and management of extremely large IP networks. This experience allows UUNET to provide high quality Internet services on a multinational basis to over 70,000 business customers NetworkMagazine worldwide from more than 1,000 local Points of Presence.

Multinational Presence UUNET was awarded UUNET has been expanding its worldwide network at a rate of over 1,000 percent per year. Worldwide Service by UUNET’s Network

Network Magazine, UUNET’s backbone network is the fastest, most rigorously engineered, and most reliable TCP/IP network in

and Best ISP 1997 by the world. UUNET uses high speed lines exclusively, creating an ultra high-capacity, fully redundant, fully meshed backbone. This multimegabit network has been expanded to include OC-12c (622Mbps) and OC-48c Network World. (2.4Gbps) links enabling us to offer the fastest speeds available over TCP/IP today.

As expected, some areas of the network are busier than others. These high volume locations tend to center around major metropolitan areas. In an effort to combat potential bottlenecks, UUNET has introduced metro area rings. These rings interconnect hubs by Synchronous Optical Network (SONET) technology in major metro areas at OC-12c speeds, greatly improving the efficiency of traffic flow throughout the network, and enhancing the redundancy of the backbone.

All, backbone links and switching nodes, regardless of where they exist, are fully redundant to eliminate single points of failure. UUNET takes every opportunity to add resiliency to its network, using diverse fiber paths, uninterruptible power supplies at every , and even diverse fiber entrance facilities whenever possible. In the unlikely event that a link fails, the network is designed to reroute traffic instantaneously and automatically around the failure to maximize efficiency. All UUNET switching nodes are located in power- protected, physically secure telephone company facilities.

In addition to UUNET ’s network design, UUNET customers have access to the best connectivity to the rest of

www.us.uu.net the Internet. Since its inception in 1987, UUNET has formed alliances and network peering points with a number of networks, both in the US and worldwide. These peering points with other networks aid in the prompt and reliable delivery of TCP/IP traffic from UUNET customers to the rest of the Internet. Today, with the combination of public and private peering points, UUNET has more connections to other components of the Internet, both in the US and internationally, than any other Internet provider. The Network Operations Center

UUNET’s state-of-the-art Network Operations Center (NOC) represents our commitment to providing businesses with a service capable of supporting mission-critical applications. The NOC is fully staffed 24 hours per day, seven days per week. In addition to the regular staff, at least one senior engineer is always on site to ensure a timely solution to any network problem. Using Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) and custom network monitoring tools, UUNET’s NOC monitors the entire network and every leased-line customer’s link every 5 minutes. The monitoring provides usage statistics, loopback information, error rates, and helps with troubleshooting should there ever be a problem. In an effort to keep our customers informed, UUNET posts current network status information on the World Wide Web at www.noc.uu.net in addition to providing a toll- free telephone number available to customers 24 hours a day.

UUNET prides itself on offering the highest level of customer installation in the industry. Part of UUNET’s unmatched service involves the support provided for new leased line customers. When a customer orders leased-line connectivity to UUNET, a few of the services provided are as follows:

Line ordering — For new leased line customers, UUNET orders the leased-line between the customer’s location and the nearest UUNET Point-of-Presence (POP) with the local exchange carrier and/or a long-distance carrier. UUNET oversees the correct installation of this circuit, and holds the actual lease on the circuit once it is completed. Because UUNET holds the lease on the circuit, UUNET can request maintenance and troubleshooting from the appropriate carrier. This helps to streamline the trouble shooting process by Expanding its worldwide network at eliminating potential delays and disruptions. UUNET passes through the price of this circuit to the customer, over 1000 percent per year, UUNET’s allowing customers to receive a single monthly bill from UUNET, including all connection costs. network continues to grow using the existing MCI Worldcom fiber optic Affordable CPE pricing — UUNET can provide its customers high quality customer premises equipment infrastructure. (CPE) at prices well below retail. All UUNET provided CPE is tested and certified for use with a UUNET connection. UUNET also pre-configures the equipment before making it available to the customers. Additionally, a copy of each customer’s CPE configuration is maintained on a common database, accessible by UUNET technical support personnel. This aids in the installation process and any subsequent troubleshooting.

IP addressing — UUNET assigns its leased-line customers a portion of a standard Class C block of non-portable addresses. Full Class C’s or additional Class C blocks can be obtained with proper justification. Dial customers receive either a single, dynamically assigned, IP address (single users) or a portion of a standard Class C block (LAN dial customers).

DNS registration — UUNET will facilitate Domain Name Server (DNS) registration. DNS registration is handled by InterNIC, the organization responsible for allocating domain names. The fee for domain name registration is billed to the customer directly by the InterNIC/Arin.

DNS service — Every domain name needs a primary and secondary DNS to advertise it to the rest of the Internet. UUNET provides primary and secondary DNS for its customers. UUNET customers who wish to become Internet Service Providers (ISPs) by private labeling UUNET services must provide DNS for their end-users.

Installation Engineer — Leased-line customers are assigned an Installation Engineer. The engineer will work with the customer on all of the above issues and is personally responsible for the timely installation of the customer’s connections. The Installation Engineer will ensure that all the necessary steps have been taken to bring the customer connection up. The engineer will guide and assist the customer through the installation procedure, and will be available for customer inquiries for a 30-day period after the circuit is “up and billable.” This direct relationship between the Installation Engineer and the customer is invaluable during the process of bringing a leased-line connection up to full operation.

Range of Service — UUNET offers a full range of Internet solutions. From dedicated leased-lines to dial-up connections UUNET has the experience and expertise to get your company up and running on the Internet. UUNET also offers a wide variety of value added products and services that are helping customers cut costs while reaching more people, faster and with better reliability than ever before.
