V-College Codes THE UNIVERSITY OF WISCONSIN CENTRAL DATA REQUEST COLLEGE CODES TABLE Overview The CDR College Code Table is presented in two sequences: alphabetically by college name within state and sequentially by code number. All colleges external to the continental United States that are located within a specific U.S. territory or foreign country are given the identical code. Update Procedure The CDR College Code Table was developed from the ACT College Code Table. However, the CDR table is maintained independently of any other coding structure. The CDR update provides a summary of recent updates to the CDR College Code Table. The procedure outlined below may be used to request additions/changes to the table. 1. A request for an additional college code is received by the CDR table manager in OPAR. The request may be transmitted via email or over the telephone. 2. The CDR table manager checks the most recent list to insure that the institution is not listed already, possibly under anther name, e.g., Fullerton State College, Fullerton, California is listed as California State College, Fullerton. If the institution is listed, the code is given to the requestor. 3. If the institution is not listed in the table, various sources are checked to insure that the institution does exist. Some sources are: Yearbook of Higher Education Higher Education Directory American Universities and Colleges If the institution is not listed, the requestor may be notified and more information may be sought (e.g., a 2-year institution may have become a 4-year institution with a completely new name). 4. When it has been determined that a new code must be added to the table, the code is assigned on the following basis: a. check the list which is in alphabetical sequence by institution name within states to determine a possible code. b. check the numerical sequence listing to insure that the code has not been used. 5. Respond to requestor with the new code. 6. Update the table and the summary of recent updates. r_college_table_newspaper_instit University of Wisconsin System CDR Transfer Institution Table 8/31/2021 Sorted by Institution Name Within State North Carolina's Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) Prior to the conclusion of the Civil War in 1865, the majority of African Americans in the United States were enslaved persons living in the southern states. Education for African Americans was sparse, especially in the South with laws such as North Carolina's that prohibited teaching enslaved persons to read and write. It was a rare occurrence for an African American to be literate. While there were a few schools dedicated to African American education in the North prior to the Civil War, the first college available to African Americans in the South was Shaw University, which opened its doors in 1865. A number of institutions dedicated specifically for the education of African Americans were founded in the era immediately following the Civil War and others followed when segregation limited equal access to education. These schools are often known as Historically Black Colleges and Universities, or "HBCUs". North Carolina has twelve historically black colleges and universities, including the oldest in the South, Raleigh's Shaw University, founded in 1865, and North Carolina's newest HBCU, North Carolina Central University, founded in 1910 in Durham. Ten of these schools continue to operate today.
