Mark Williams comes from one of ’s strongest football families, and the Williams name will always be synonymous with our great game of Australian Rules Football.

Son of SANFL legend , Mark began his senior playing career at West Adelaide in 1976, before moving to Port Adelaide at the beginning of the 1979 season where he quickly became a star of South Australian football. Mark played for two seasons at Port Adelaide to claim two SANFL Premierships and one All Australian representation before moving to the VFL to play with the Collingwood Football Club.

During his time at Collingwood Mark won two Copeland Trophies awarded to the team’s player, one of which was in his first season. At the beginning of the 1983 season Mark was awarded the captaincy of the club and held that position before leaving at the end of the 1986 season to become vice- captain of the newly formed Bears Football Club.

After playing four seasons at the , Mark retired from VFL/AFL football to become the first player from the SANFL to play 200 games at VFL/AFL level. However before declaring his playing career completely over he returned for two more seasons at the Port Adelaide Football Club to claim two more SANFL Premierships.

Finishing his playing career on a high, Mark slipped straight into the senior coaching position at the , before moving into the AFL ranks as a assistant coach under the great Kevin Sheedy at the Essendon Football Club. After two years at Essendon Mark moved back to his beloved Port Adelaide Football Club, who had since joined the AFL competition, to take up an assistant role under , before succeeding him as senior coach at the beginning of the 1999 season.

Mark went on to coach the Port Adelaide Football Club for 12 seasons, where his innovative strategies and highly competitive nature turned the newly formed franchise into one of the AFL’s powerhouse clubs leading them into 7 finals series. Mark achieved the ultimate success in football, winning the 2004 AFL Premiership, defeating the by 40 points and becoming Port Adelaide’s first AFL Premiership coach. Port Adelaide again reached the Grand Final in 2007 but were beaten by Geelong who would go on to prove themselves as a dominant force of the competition for years to come.

An economics and physical education teacher for 10 years previous to his coaching career, Mark’s ability to get the most out of not just his players but the people around him has seen four of his previous assistants become successful senior coaches.

In 2010, Mark decided to step down as coach feeling he had taken the team and club as far as he could. PROFILE

As football is in his pedigree it was of no surprise that the newest AFL franchise, Greater Western Sydney targeted Mark to join them as a Senior Assistant Coach for season 2011 and beyond where he will again work with Kevin Sheedy.

Outside of football Mark leads a healthy (non-drinker/non-smoker) and active lifestyle, and is kept busy by his five children.

Mark is high in demand in the media and for keynote speaking engagements where he covers subjects such as leadership, managing change, developing successful teams, and motivation.
