Scholarship Boys and Children’s Books: Working-Class Writing for Children in Britain in the 1960s and 1970s Haru Takiuchi Thesis submitted towards the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the School of English Literature, Language and Linguistics, Newcastle University, March 2015 ii ABSTRACT This thesis explores how, during the 1960s and 1970s in Britain, writers from the working-class helped significantly reshape British children’s literature through their representations of working-class life and culture. The three writers at the centre of this study – Aidan Chambers, Alan Garner and Robert Westall – were all examples of what Richard Hoggart, in The Uses of Literacy (1957), termed ‘scholarship boys’. By this, Hoggart meant individuals from the working-class who were educated out of their class through grammar school education. The thesis shows that their position as scholarship boys both fed their writing and enabled them to work radically and effectively within the British publishing system as it then existed. Although these writers have attracted considerable critical attention, their novels have rarely been analysed in terms of class, despite the fact that class is often central to their plots and concerns. This thesis, therefore, provides new readings of four novels featuring scholarship boys: Aidan Chambers’ Breaktime and Dance on My Grave, Robert Westall’s Fathom Five, and Alan Garner’s Red Shift. The thesis is split into two parts, and these readings make up Part 1. Part 2 focuses on scholarship boy writers’ activities in changing publishing and reviewing practices associated with the British children’s literature industry. In doing so, it shows how these scholarship boy writers successfully supported a movement to resist the cultural mechanisms which suppressed working-class culture in British children’s literature. -

But probably he never heard much of what went on in the world beyond his own hunting runs; a world in which Troy had fallen three hundred years ago, and Egypt was already past its greatest days, and a hollow among the hills by the ford of a rather muddy river had still more than a hundred years to wait before wild Latin herdsmen pitched their tents there and founded Rome. -

Sword Song as her “Swan Song”: A Fitting Culmination of the Rosemary Sutcliff Legacy? Barbara Carman Garner Carleton University, Ottawa The novel that Rosemary Sutcliff was revising when she died suddenly on July 23, 1992 at the age of 72 was to have been called The Sword Song of Bjarni Sigurdson. 1 Sutcliff had seen the manuscript through two-thirds of the second draft of her traditional three -draft writing process before making a fair copy (Meek 62 qtd. in Garside-Neville). Sutcliff’s cousin and godson, Anthony Lawton, transcribed the draft, and Sutcliff’s long-time editor, Jill Black, did the final editing of Lawton’s transcription. Sword Song was published in 1997. Early reviews of the novel were mixed. Sandra Johnson’s review in The (London) Times considered the opening a “stunner,” explaining that “a 16- year old boy is exiled from his settlement.” She continued, “Regrettably, the story quavers thereafter, meandering around the coast of Britain as young Bjarni sells his fighting skills to one fiery-beardy after another, but the dense historical detail and rich colours are all still there” (n. pag.). Compare this assessment with The Horn Book reviewer’s high praise for the novel: “Sutcliff’s careful handling of how a young man, influenced by hero-worship and the force of custom, deals with the difficult choices that lead to maturity is nothing short of masterly. An unexpected and most welcome gift”(n.pag.). 1 Today I aim to convince you of the validity of yet another reviewer’s comment, that “Sword Song is a fitting capstone to Sutcliff’s marvelous career as one of Britain’s premier authors of Historical fiction” (jacket hard cover edition). -

Historical Fiction for Children and Young People: changing fashions, changing forms, changing representations in British writing 1934‐2014 Ann Christine Clark This thesis is submitted for the qualification of Doctor of Philosophy School of English Literature, Language and Linguistics Newcastle University Resubmitted July 2015 Abstract In Language and Ideology in Children’s Fiction (1992) John Stephens forecast the demise of children’s historical fiction as a genre on the grounds that both history itself and the humanist values Stephens saw as underpinning historical fiction were irrelevant to young readers in postmodernity and intrinsically at odds with the attitudes and values of literary postmodernism. In fact, by the end of the millennium juvenile historical fiction was resurgent and continues to propagate humanist ideology. This study explores the changing nature and status of the genre as it has been published in Britain since Geoffrey Trease’s ground‐breaking Bows Against the Barons, a left‐wing retelling of the Robin Hood story, was published in 1934. Consideration is given to the relationship between cultural change and the treatment of the structure, themes, settings and characters that typically feature in historical novels for the young. The work comprises an Introduction and three themed case studies based on a character (Robin Hood), a historical period (the long eighteenth century), and a historical event (the First World War). The case studies are used both to chart changes in the nature, quantity, and reception of historical fiction and to demonstrate the extent to which writers have used historical narratives to explore concerns that were topical at the time the books were written. -
