Hector kam als Kind mit seinen Eltern aus dem Busch nach Pukatja (Ernabella). Er arbeitete als Viehzüchter in Curtin Springs Station, ungefähr 130 km nördlich von Amata.

Hector zog nach Amata um, um bei den Staudämmen in der Nähe von Wingellina zu arbeiten. Er baute und reparierte auch Zäune und organisierte den Bau der Viehgatter bei Amata. Er kehrte nach Pukatja zurück und baute dort die große Scheune.

Hector erzählte die Geschichte aus seiner Jugendzeit, als er als junger Mann den alten Ghan Zug von Oodnadatta erwischte, der nach Adelaide fuhr, wo er Früchte pflücken wollte. Er sagte, „seine tjitji (Kinder) waren Babys und krabbelten noch.“

Als ein Stammesältester wurde Hector als Hüter von Gesetz und Kultur der Anangu [indigene Australier] verehrt. Dies wird in seinen Bildmotiven deutlich: in seiner Schöpfungsgeschichte der anumara oder essba- ren Raupe.

Im Jahre 2011 wurde Hector Burton vom „Australian Art Collector“ (Ausgabe Januar - März) als einer der 50 sammelwürdigsten Künstler (50 most collectable artists) Australiens ausgezeichnet.
