Summer Worship

Summer is here, but that doesn’t mean that the church is on vacation. We are still busy doing God’s work, and every week brings new adventures. Here is a preview of what is happening in worship during this month.

June 3 — Recognition of graduates. Kayla Reidenbach, one of our youth, will be preaching. June 10 — Riley Hospital Sunday. Ann and Justin Verba will share with us some of God’s healing work at Riley Children’s Hospital. June 17 — Fathers Day, with recognition of the roles that men play in God’s work here on earth. June 24 — Sending and blessing of our youth and adults who will be attending the Youth Gathering in Houston that week. By the way. . .Sanctuary Choir mid-week rehearsals are over for the sea- son, but we will still be singing until the end of June. If you would like to sing with us, join us on Sunday mornings at 8:15 to learn the anthem that we will be singing during the first service that day. All are welcome!

Soli Deo gloria! Glory be to God alone! For Messiah’s ministry of worship and music,

Stan Engle

The Messenger June 2018 15 GROWTH & LEARNING, cont. Preschool/Childcare News “Every new beginning comes from some other beginning’s end.” Another preschool year has come to an end already! This time of the year always seems so bittersweet for me and for my staff members. We have watched these children grow physically, spiritually, and academically. Some will return to us in the fall, but some are off to bigger and better things in Kindergarten. We love them all, and wish them a safe, fun summer. Our sum- mer session is beginning, and the kiddos are excited about spending some time outside. Although it is summer, the learning never ends. We are looking forward to a fun time of learning and playing. Thank you to those who have continually contributed to the pre- school and childcare, either with your time or with a financial contribution. We are so ap- preciative of the support for our ministry. Enjoy the sunshine and warm weather! God’s peace, Karen Haines, Preschool and Childcare Director

16 June 2018 The Messenger CARE & NURTURE From The Parish Nurses... We are seeing God’s renewal through spring – leaves reappearing on trees, grass turning green again and beautiful explosion of different colors of flowers. It is also our chance at renewal. As we move into summer and more outdoor activity, it is the perfect time to work on improving our health habits. Eating better is easier with the increased availability of local fresh fruits and vegetables. You can increase your level of activity with outdoor walks and exercise. It is a perfect time to dust off the bike. Get outside and play catch, frisbee or hide and seek with your kids or grandkids. Stay hydrated with water. If you are inclined to flavored water, try flavoring your water bottle with a couple mashed berries or melon instead of sweetened drinks (sugar or artificial). Get out and enjoy the beautiful world of wonder that God has provided for us. By enjoy- ing the scenery and foods that are provided, we improve our health as well. Don’t forget the sunscreen as you enjoy the outdoors. See you outside. Your Parish Nurses

Messiah Quilters We will meet again on June 5 from 9-3 pm for an all day sewing session. We would love to have you join us! Remember there are many non-sewing jobs also. Questions or more information, please contact [email protected] or 485-4100. Many hands make light work.

We will be travelling to Puerto Plata in the Dominican Republic and staying at a luxury resort on the beach! We are hoping to have Pastors Wade and Heather Apel lead the marriage retreat, and we will be working with Mission TwentyFive 35 (the same mis- sionaries the youth group worked with in the summer of 2017) to coordinate our social impact projects for the trip. Space is limited to only 20 couples, so signup early. If you are interested in learning more, please attend the informational meeting on Sunday, June 10th at 10:05am between services in the library. We are asking that EVERY Messiah Family sells 15-20 raffle tickets. If we have 250 families sell just 20 tickets, we could raise over $100,000.00! We need your help to make this a success. Visit www.messiahlc.com for official rules and ticket order forms!

Summertime Giving! Summertime is fun and the living is easy, but often the giving is not. Summer attendance and offering contributions often drop significantly in our congregation. This is because of vacation travel, lake life, sports schedules, and other activities that keep members away from worship. If you would like to make your giving easy and consistent this summer, please consider our electronic giving options. Many of our members are already using this simple and secure way to make and track their giving. If you would like to learn more, please contact Cory Dold in the church office or check out our website at www.messiahlc.com and click on the Giving Button!

Missionary News Missionary Kathleen Lutz spent most of the month of May traveling to Indiana, being reju- venated in the rural home of a friend and mourning with her family the recent death of her ninety-plus year old father in Auburn. His memorial service was May 20, and Kathleen returned to a huge city in Kenya on May 22 to continue her service to fellow Christians and others in the slums of that large city under the sponsorship of the World Mission Prayer League. Please pray that our God will continue to give her physical and spiritual strength as she has dedicated her life to carrying out His work in a faraway area of the world. If you are interested in providing financial assistance to Kathleen, please indicate such on a pew envelope.

Thank you to Steve Van Wyngarden, Jena Rejak, and Roger McDannold for the tedious yet diligent effort in implementing the proposed amendments for the Constitution and Bylaws.

24 June 2018 The Messenger Messiah Lutheran Church Vision Statement Our Vision: To forever change lives through the Gospel of Jesus by becoming an equipping, empowering, and mobilizing church in our community that displays the love of Christ and con- nects with people of all walks of life through worship, communion, service, fellowship, and compassion, led by the Holy Spirit and focused on the Great Commission (Mt 28.18-20).

Our vision of 2017 includes a 3-5-year focus on…

Singles and Starters (ages 17-32) We desire to broaden our scope of ministry to meet the practical spiritual needs of single, young adults. Messiah Lutheran Church will commit resources to expand hospitality and engage- ment to single, young adults. In the next year, we will develop a social media ministry to engage young adults in meaningful issues of faith and life. We will also create a physical space on our premises that will foster hospitable and authentic conversations.

Families with Young Children Messiah Lutheran Church desires to partner in worship and ministry with families with young children. Through our preschool and childcare ministry (Preschool/Childcare), we can meet the needs of this group, which comprises a large portion of the community sur- rounding the church. It is of utmost importance to connect with these families because youth are the lifeblood and future of our church. We will build and strengthen our relationships to families with young children through the Preschool/Childcare ministry. In the next five years, we dream of growing church membership within the Preschool/ Childcare program from 10% to 60%. Furthermore, we desire to increase attendance and inclusion of the congregation at Preschool/Childcare events and Preschool/Childcare fami- lies at congregational events.

Forever Young Messiah Lutheran Church is called by God to reach those who are Forever Young, who are nearing retirement or are already retired, with the Good News of abundant life through Jesus Christ. The skills and experiences of these adults are a rich resource for our community. We will offer them new opportunities for worship, for fellowship among themselves and within our congregation, seminars and personal services to maintain and improve their quality of life, and avenues for them to be of service to the community. In each of the next 5 years, we will offer 4-6 meaningful outreach activities for person- al growth, fellowship, and service.
