Laughter and smiles have dominated these gatherings. It has been a joy “getting to know” these families and we look forward to the oppor- tunity for more of these occasions. Son is Patrick. • Cory Dold’s in-laws, Erica’s parents • Grandchildren – Lainey, Noah, Hunter, Aiden (and another grandson in the oven from Erica!) • Love Florida, go to the same vacation spot for years • Enjoy camping Grace Reed: • Ate at The Factory on March 10, 2018 • Showed us several family photos and heir- looms • Son, John, and family, in California • Has lived in her current residence for over 50 years! • Loves her church and church family • Thankful for Dave and Jaci Beard and others for helping with transportation 4 June 2018 The Messenger The Van WynGardens • Don and Karen, with son Steve and daughter-in- law Kacey • Ate at their home on April 14, 2018 • Don & Karen met in Chicago, neat story! • Enjoy traveling to Hilton Head, tennis, and play- ing games with family • We played “Sequence” with males vs. females, and the females won! Meme and I have since pur- chased the game. • Don has served on Council and Finance; Karen has taught Sunday School and participates in Bible studies. Barb and Rich Franklin • Ate at their home on May 5, 2018 • Rich smoked a pot roast on the grill and made homemade cheesecake • Two sons: Tony (Samantha), in Seymour, and Jeff, in Lafayette. • Nancy J. Berry is Barb’s mom. • They love visiting their sons when their sons’ schedules permit • Looking forward to downsizing • Rich participates in Hand Bells (started with sons’ participation even though he didn’t know how to read sheet music at first). Barb has led small groups. Both Rich and Barb have helped in the sound booth The Messenger June 2018 5 Summer Worship Summer is here, but that doesn’t mean that the church is on vacation. We are still busy doing God’s work, and every week brings new adventures. Here is a preview of what is happening in worship during this month. June 3 — Recognition of graduates. Kayla Reidenbach, one of our youth, will be preaching. June 10 — Riley Hospital Sunday. Ann and Justin Verba will share with us some of God’s healing work at Riley Children’s Hospital. June 17 — Fathers Day, with recognition of the roles that men play in God’s work here on earth. June 24 — Sending and blessing of our youth and adults who will be attending the Youth Gathering in Houston that week. By the way. .Sanctuary Choir mid-week rehearsals are over for the sea- son, but we will still be singing until the end of June. If you would like to sing with us, join us on Sunday mornings at 8:15 to learn the anthem that we will be singing during the first service that day. All are welcome! Soli Deo gloria! Superintendent Thomas G. Maridada II, Ed.D. to Depart Pontiac School District Thomas G. Maridada II, Ed.D. recently announced to the Pontiac Board of Education his intention to transition out of his current position as Superintendent of Schools. Dr. Maridada, who was the Michigan Superintendent of the Year in 2008, has accepted a position to craft urban educa- tional policy in the nation’s capital. This comes in the wake of many extraordinary initiatives that have been developed by the Thomas G. Maridada II superintendent and his executive cabinet. Within the last two years, Maridada’s team has created an early college program which allows students to earn their Associate of Arts degree along with their high school diploma, developed a partnership with Cranbrook Institute of Science, created a gifted and talented school, developed two International Baccalaureate programs, formed a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) Academy, and created numerous partnerships with Rochester College, Oakland Community College, Oakland University, the Oakland Career and Technical Institute as well as the Society of Black Engineers. Within the last two years, Pontiac High made AYP (Adequate Yearly Progress) for the first time in the district’s history, along with eight of the nine remaining schools in the district which also demon- strated academic growth and made AYP.
