Perinjanam GP gets a Biogas plant

A biogas plant is being constructed in Perinjanam Grama Panchayath of District in under the GOBAR-Dhan (Galvanising Organic Bio Agro Resources Dhan) Scheme of the Swachh Bharat Mission Grameen (SBM-G), Department of Drinking Water and Sanitation, Government of .

According to Mr. K. K. Sachith, President of the Grama Panchayath, gas produced in the facility will be used for household cooking by 20 families that have been rehabilitated in the adjoining village, post Tsunami. Currently in the final stage, gas pipeline work is underway, and the project will be completed in 2 weeks’ time.

Built using the BARC model, the facility has 1 TPD capacity. The total cost of the project was Rs. 35 lakhs – Rs. 25 lakhs taken from Suchitwa Keralam Scheme of Suchitwa Mission and Rs. 10 lakhs from SBM-G funds.

Technical support to the project is being provided by the Socio-Economic Unit Foundation. The plant intends to manage waste from the market and chicken stalls. Initially, the project will be run as a pilot for 10 households and thereafter will be extended to 20 households, all of which have been provided with single burner stoves.

Every day, a large amount of biodegradable waste is generated which is normally sent to dumping grounds, particularly if composting is not done, causing many health hazards.

A biogas plant can process biodegradable waste such as kitchen waste, grass, dried cow dung and dry leaves, to provide a ‘zero garbage, zero effluent’ and high-nutrient manure and methane gas. The manure so produced has high nitrogen content and is an excellent soil conditioner. As for the methane gas, it can be used as fuel for domestic purposes or in vehicles. In Perinjanam Grama Panchayath, the gas will be connected to 20 households in the Tsunami village and used for cooking.
