Morris Carnovsky, distinguished Shakespearean actor, will present a pro-

gram of dramatic readings at 8 p.m. Sunday, March 20, in the Sala de Puerto Rico of the

Student Center at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Mr. Carnovsky's appearance at M.I.T. is sponsored by M.I.T.'s B'Nai Brith

Hillel Foundation, of which Rabbi Herman Pollack is director. Admission is free, and re-

freshments will be served.

Born in St. Louis, Mo., . Mr. Carnovsky received his education at Washington

University. His first professional performances were given at the Provincetown Theater in

Greenwich Village, New York. He played in the Theater Guild's first production of George

Bernard Shaw's "St. Joan" and in many later Guild offerings.

In the 1930's Mr. Carnovsky was a charter member of New York's famed

Group Theater. More recently, he has appeared in a number of Broadway hits, including

"Tiger at the Gates, " "Cold Wind and the Warm, " "My Sister Eileen," and "Rhinoceros."

The author of several articles on the theater, a teacher at the Actor's Lab in

Hollywood (1944-49), as well as an actor-director at the Goodman Theater in Chicago, Mr.

Carnovsky has also been a principle performer in "Hamlet, " "A Midsummer Night's Dream,"

", " ", " "Marco's Millions, " "Doctor's Dilemma, "

", " ", " "Hotel Universe, " and "A Family Affair." Last

November he was presented the New England Theater Conference Annual Award for "creative

achievement in knerican Theater."

Mr. Carnovsky is most famous for his 1963 portrayal of at the

American Shakespeare Festival in Stratford, Connecticut. Howard Taubman, theater critic.

for the New York Times described his performance as "masterly in the delicacy and penetra-

tion of its nuances."

At present Mr. Carnovsky is directing and appearing in theatrical productions

at Brandeis University.
