How are First Reading: The Lord God is my they related? help; who will prove me wrong? The Suffering Servant of Isaiah undergoes much distress and ridicule, (Isaiah 50:5-9a). but is able to bear it because he has listened to the promptings of God day after day. The psalm tells us that God listens, too. God hears our prayers Psalm: I will walk before the Lord, for help and is always ready to save us. As our faith deepens, so does our in the land of the living (Psalm 116). desire to do the works of justice and charity that build up the reign of Second Reading: Faith, if it does God. God directs our actions in ways we often cannot see, and we don’t not have works, is dead (James always see the results. We are called upon in faith to trust that what we 2:14-18). do is enough, and that willingness to listen to God’s promptings will lead us in the right way. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co. Gospel: asked his disciples, “Who do you say that I am?” (Mark Treasures From Our Tradition 8:27-35). In this country, we don’t name our churches “The Fourth Avenue The English translation of the Psalm Responses Catholic Church,” but rather seek a patron saint or mystery of faith. In Ireland, the Readings for the Week Roman (English) practices didn’t take hold, and so churches are known Monday: 1 Cor 11:17-26, 33; Ps simply by the street they are on, or by a nickname. Saint Francis of Assisi 40:7-10, 17; Lk 7:1-10 in Dublin is often called “Adam and Eve” after a pub in the same street. The pub sign is an interesting carving of our first parents, so they become Tuesday: 1 Cor 12:12-14, 27-31a; patrons by default. Ps 100:1-5; Lk 7:11-17 Increasingly in the United States, we are seeing a familiar European Wednesday: 1 Cor 12:31 — 13:13; pattern emerge when a few churches, each bearing the name of a patron Ps 33:2-5, 12, 22; Lk 7:31-35 saint or mystery, are gathered into one parish that bears a different name. Thursday: 1 Cor 15:1-11; Ps 118: Thus, we might hear of a parish of “Midvalley City” comprised of Saint 1b-2, 16ab-17, 28; Lk 7:36-50 Mary, Saint Francis, and Saint Ursula churches. Once a church has been Friday: Eph 4:1-7, 11-13; Ps 19:2- consecrated, its name may not normally be changed. Therefore, when 5; Mt 9:9-13 parishes are merged, a new name is given to the parish, which may or may not be that of a heavenly patron, but the church buildings retain their Saturday: 1 Cor 15:35-37, 42-49; names. In the process, we have lost sight of some worthy patrons of old, Ps 56:10c-14; Lk 8:4-15 but have also seen new parishes open dedicated to twentieth-century Sunday: Wis 2:12, 17-20; Ps 54:3- saints like Edith Stein, Katharine Drexel, and Mother Teresa. 8; Jas 3:16 — 4:3; Mk 9:30-37 Rev. Like many young married couples, starting a family, owning a home and staying committed to our faith was the plan. We were married in Bay City, Michigan and lived in West Palm Beach, Florida where our daughter was born. I applied for a position with the Drug Enforcement Administration, and we traveled to Los Angeles, a city that neither of us had ever visited. While in Los Angeles, we were blessed with the birth of our son. Our profession took us back to Florida, the Bahamas, New Orleans, Washington DC, and Detroit, Michigan. Post 9/11, in 2009, and after a long discussion, I was transferred to Afghanistan where I had the honor of leading DEA personnel for 4 ½ years, coming home only three times a year. From Afghanistan, I was transferred to Dallas, Texas and then back to New Orleans. My point in discussing this path is that I did not live in my home for seven years, but our marriage is successful because of our strong faith and marriage commitment. I learned fast that my spouse is my best friend. While working as a pre-school Shawls for Prayers teacher, Lori raised our children and coordinated all of the day to day events.
