Ruminations A great year for blackberries, and those who love them by Tena Starr It’s a great blackberry year. The past two have been skimpy to nonexistent, but this year the bushes are loaded with berries. That, I learned two years ago, when trying to figure out why my bushes were no longer producing fruit, is because this past winter was so mild. The previous two winters have been cold, and the blackberries that grow in Vermont don’t thrive in cold. They’ll survive it in most cases, but they don’t like it (I’m with them), and they produce little fruit the following summer. But this past winter was so mild that I was looking forward to a great blackberry crop. For some reason, this family is inordinately fond of blackberries. They’re a terror to pick with their big thorns that catch on your clothes and dig into any exposed skin. I have no idea what blackberries are so worried about, but they certainly have developed a formidable defense system. In general, they grow where they grow — I’ve never planted any, having never found a domestic variety that would reliably grow here. But there they are. When I was a kid, picking blackberries was an annual expedition. We didn’t have any on our farm, so went elsewhere, to a patch that seemed to belong to no one.
