Positive Behaviour for Learning

PBL Promoting Positive Behaviour for Learning

As a PBL school LIHS rewards students who are respectful, responsible and safe in every setting.

Our school values:

RESPECT ⎜RESPONSIBILITY ⎜SAFETY

Term One saw a strong focus on our PBL Values of Respect, Responsibility and Safety.

We show RESPECT by being tolerant and accepting of everyone; being polite and considerate of others; using appropriate language and wearing school uniform.

We show RESPONSIBILITY by being at the right place, right time; staying on task in class, and being prepared; following procedures and instructions including putting rubbish in the bin and caring for our surroundings.

We show SAFETY by following instructions, following the 'hands off' policy and having a smoke free zone.

Weekly PBL Focus Values throughout Term 2 will continue to remain a high priority in all settings. Specific PBL lessons will also occur to encourage active learning in classrooms around the school. Lake Illawarra High School uses VIVO to reward

What’s happening at Lake High?

Work Experience

A number of students in Year 10 successfully participated in work experience during the last week of Term 1. This is a very worthwhile experience for all students to be involved in as it could open doors to further opportunities and build interest towards different careers. Students actively participated in careers such as teaching, manufacturing and fabrication, retail, carpentry, cabinetmaking and hairdressing.

At Lake Illawarra HS, students in Year 10 are able to do work experience again during Term 2 and 3, as well as in late Term 4. So if students are keen to do more than one week of work experience to help finalise future planning, it is possible.

SALT Workshop Women in trades: Three year 10 students took up the opportunity to discover alternate careers for women, and travelled to Kanahooka HS to be involved in a hands-on workshop where they were given the opportunity to discover different trades.

All the presenters were women who have successfully established careers in male dominated areas. They discussed the endless possibilities for females in these industries. All the girls were inspired and had a fantastic day.

“Respect, Responsibility & Safety” Year 8 Marine Studies Taster Day

A great day was had by all last Wednesday on the Year 8 Marine taster day. As an introduction to Marine Studies the IEEC helped put on a fun-filled day down at Lake Illawarra. Impressively, our students discovered an array of fantastic organisms in the rock pools of Windang Island including octopus, echinoderms, puffer fish, elephant snails and sea anemones.

After searching the Island, Elizabeth from ‘Sister Speak’ gave an inspiring talk to the students on our local middens and their importance to Aboriginal people. This was followed by an afternoon of fishing, nipper pumping, paddle boarding, kayaking, canoeing and a quick BBQ to finish off the day.

Tom’s duties include gardening and horticulture. Tom also participates in the JET Program every Tuesday afternoon with Shay Taylor and Jayden McWaters.

Jai Pemberton is doing his work experience at Bears Auto Hospital where he is learning the skills necessary to become a panel beater.

A big thanks to those who continue to support our students in work experience, none of these opportunities would happen without you!

Harbour Centre Sailing Experience

On Thursday, 4th April, eleven students from the Harbour Centre travelled to Rushcutters Bay as part of their rewards excursion for Positive Behaviour and following Lake Illawarra High School’s core values: Safety, Respect and Responsibility.

The students explored Sydney Harbour while steering the yacht and also used their determination and strength to mast the sails and cruise around the harbour. It was great to see the students getting involved in sailing a yacht and enjoying the experience. Once again, the positive attitude shown by everyone made it a wonderful day for the students and staff. Congratulations to those students who attended on the day!

“Respect, Responsibility & Safety” Student Recognition

Congratulations to Year 10 student, Jarrod Dyer, who swam in the Georgina Hope Foundation Australian Age Championships in Brisbane during the April school holidays.

Representing Swim Club, Jarrod competed in ten events, where he was awarded four bronze medals, making him the third fastest swimmer in his age category as a multiclass swimmer! Jarrod finished third in the 50- metre freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke and butterfly.

What a fantastic achievement. Well done, Jarrod!

Careers Information

Careers EXPO

On Tuesday 9th May, Year 10 and 12 and any interested Year 11 students, had the opportunity to attend the annual Careers Expo with other schools of the Illawarra. Over a hundred stalls from various fields exhibited and handed out information regarding TAFE, University courses, apprenticeships and private colleges and businesses to name a few.

All students would have collected various brochures and sheets of information for them to browse through. Now they can begin to discover what they would like to do beyond school or start to consolidate their future ambitions. This is an exciting time for many, especially Year 12, as they make future decisions. As always, I am more than happy to help them in the process. Individual interviews with Year 12 will commence and various options and plans for their future are being discussed. This process will assist them in being prepared for their future ambitions. Prior to these meetings I urge students to have their resume and portfolios organised to ensure all relevant information is ready for future jobs, TAFE and university applications.

I was very impressed by the mature attitude and behaviour of our students and they were excellent representatives of our school. Special thanks also to the teachers who came to the expo – without their support it would be a lot more difficult to get things done.

‘As always, I am here to help you.’
