James Arimond, S.J. Principal‘s President Mr. Brendan Conroy St. Rita Though not the oldest high school athletic conference in the state of Illinois (the former Suburban League holds that distinction), the Board of Control Chicago Catholic League has been in operation longer than any other. It all began on October 3, 1912 when representatives of eight parochial schools met in Chicago’s Great Northern Hotel President Pat Mahoney Loyola Academy (demolished in 1992) to found the Catholic League. Those charter Vice President Bruce DeSanto St. Joseph members were Loyola Academy, St. Cyril (Mt Carmel), DePaul Treasurer Scott Thies Fenwick Academy, St. Philip, St. Ignatius, De La Salle, Cathedral and St. Secretary Paul Chabura DePaul Prep Stanislaus. In that very first year of its existence, the League spon- sored only basketball and indoor baseball. Football competition was to follow in the 1913-14 school year, track in 1916-17 swimming, Coaches Association Officers golf, and tennis in 1923-24, cross country in 1946-47, wrestling in 1964-65, water polo in 1965-66, soccer in 1967 and volleyball in 1993. Baseball was dropped after the 1930 season but was reinstat- President Dan O‘Keefe Leo ed in the 1957-58 season. Vice President William Gleeson St. Laurence Treasurer Mike Curtin Leo For the first 71 years of its existence, the Chicago Catholic League operated independently of the Illinois High School Association Secretary Paul Chabura Gordon Tech (IHSA). The League’s renown, especially in football and basketball, was recognized nationwide. But, during the late 1960’s and early 1970’s, as the need developed for a wider base of competition espe- General Selection Committee cially in such sports as swimming, track, wrestling, golf, tennis and baseball, the principals of the League’s schools began to consider Scott Baum Gordon Tech the possibility of joining the IHSA. After much discussion, many Rich Bertoni Mount Carmel arguments over pros and cons, and several meetings with the IHSA staff, the Catholic League’s Principals voted 11-1 in favor of joining Gerald Brockhouse Hales Franciscan the State Association. Thought the momentous vote was taken on Paul Chabura Gordon Tech January 30, 1973, the actual entrance into the IHSA did not take Mike Curtin Leo place until June 10, 1974. The reason for the 18 month wait was to Beau Desherow Loyola Academy give the League a full year of athletic competition during which it could make the transition to those rules and practices of the IHSA Bill Gleeson St. Laurence which differed from those current at the time in the Catholic Bob Luksta St. Phillips League. Though there was a multitude of objections from many in Don Heldmann St. Mels the Catholic League to the decision to join IHSA, the benefits that have accrued to the Catholic League schools and students since Luke McGuire Fenwick 1974 have far outweighed the original objections James O‘Donnell DePaul Academy Dan O‘Keefe Leo John O‘Loughlin Loyola Academy Jim Prunty Brother Rice Tom White St. Rita Brother O'Keefe J.S. • Cougars Announce New Head Boys Basketball Coach
COUGARS ANNOUNCE NEW HEAD BOYS BASKETBALL COACH Jim Maley has been named head boys basketball coach at James B. Conant High School, effective with the 2017-2018 season. Maley takes over the program from long-time head coach Tom McCormack, who is retiring after 33 years as head coach, 32 years at Conant High School. McCormack has a 576-342 (.627 winning pct.) all-time record, including 13 seasons with 20-plus wins, and his teams have made two “Elite 8” appearances, and have five Mid-Suburban League titles. “In looking for a new coach, we knew we had very big shoes to fill,” said Conant High School Principal Julie Nowak. “Coach Maley brings a combination of expertise, a proven record of success and most importantly a tremendous sense of passion and dedication to his players and the game. He is a modern, thinking man’s coach who is as cerebral as he is athletic. He is exactly what we were looking for to lead our boys basketball program.” Maley, who also will teach physical education at Conant High School, has been the head varsity coach at St. Laurence High School (Burbank, Ill.) for the past three years, posting a 41-49 mark. During that time, his Vikings delivered the school’s first winning season in 10 years, and won more games than the team had in the previous six seasons and more Chicago Catholic League games than the previous 10 years combined. Prior to that, Maley spent three years (2011-2014) as head varsity coach at Kenwood Academy, taking the team to contenders in the Chicago Public League Red (top) Division and posting a 46-34 record.
