CONTRIBUTIONS TO THE NEWSLETTER

The Newsletter on Carboniferous Stratigraphy is published annually (in July) by SCCS. It is composed of written contributions from its members and provides a forum for short, relevant articles such as: * reports on work in progress and/or reports on activities in your work place * news items, conference notices, new publications, reviews, letters, comments * graphics suitable for black and white publication. Contributions for each issue should be timed to reach the Editor before 31 May in the year of publication. Material supplied well before this deadline would be appreciated. To facilitate setting up the Newsletter and to reduce typing errors, it would be of assistance if copy could be sent BOTH on paper and a computer disk. However, contributions without a disk are still acceptable.

The Newsletter is pre_pared using Microsoft Word on the Macintosh but contributions on most other word processing systems can be accommodated. Material should be forwarded on 3.5 inch disks in either Macintosh or IBM format. If you can supply a disk, you should observe the following requirements. Please include a printed copy and the name of the word processing package that you have used. Supply two copies of the file on disk. The first can be the normal output of your software which can include enhancements such as balding and italics but NO indents or leading TABS please. Avoid any unusual fonnatting features of your package. The second copy of the file should be saved as a plain ASCII textfile (i.e. no enhancements). Please ensure that all typing 1s done with only ONE space after each full stop at the end of each sentence. Unless specifically requested, the disk will not be returned since the cost of return postage is generally far greater than the original value of the disk. PRELIMINARY ANALYSIS: Exactly half the replies received (70) rated their primary interest to be the study of Carboniferous Biostratigraphy. Other significant primary interests, listed in decreasing order of choice were: Stratigraphic Correlation (31), Invertebrate Palaeontology (24), Lithostratigraphy (17), Biogeography (16), Sequence Stratigraphy (15) and Palaeobotany (11). [Note that the numbers should not be accumulated since many members signalled more that one primary choice].

The secondary choices were dominated by Microfossils (28) and Biostratigraphy (26), with Invertebrate Palaeontology (17) the only other field to exceed 10 in number. Predictably, many of these choices were accompanied by a third selection of Palaeoecology (23) or Biogeography (12).

The major conclusion to be drawn from the above table is that, predictably, most members see themselves primarily as Stratigraphers who utilise the various fields of Palaeontology as an essential adjunct to their work. The low levels of interest in many of the other fields, especially Geochronology, is a matter of some concern that needs to be addressed.
