Carmina Burana Carl Orff (1895–1982) Composed: 1935–1936 Style: Contemporary Duration: 58 minutes The Latin title of tonight’s major work, translated literally as “Songs of Beuren,” comes from the Abby of Benediktbeuren where a book of poems was discovered in 1803. The Abbey is located about 30 miles south of Munich, where the composer Carl Orff was born, educated, and spent most of his life. The 13th century book contains roughly 200 secular poems that describe medieval times. The poems, written by wandering scholars and clerics known as Goliards, attack and satirize the hypocrisy of the Church while praising the self-indulgent virtues of love, food, and drink. Their language and form often parody liturgical phrases and conventions. Similarly, Orff often uses the styles and conventions of 13th century church music, most notably plainchant, to give an air of seriousness and reverence to the texts that their actual meaning could hardly demand. In addition to plainchant, however, the eclectic musical material relies upon all kinds of historical antecedents— from flamenco rhythms (no. 17, “Stetit puella”) to operatic arias (no. 21, “Intrutina”) to chorale texture (no. 24, “Ave formosissima”). The 24 poems that compose Carmina Burana are divided into three large sections— “Springtime,” “In the Tavern,” and “Court of Love” —plus a prologue and epilogue. The work begins with the chorus “Fortuna imperatrix mundi,” (“Fortune, Empress of the World”), which bemoans humankind’s helplessness in the face of the fickle wheel of fate. “Rising first, then declining, hateful life treats us badly, then with kindness, making sport of our desires.” After a brief morality tale, “Fortune plango vunera,” the “Springtime” section begins. -

Lert was born in Vienna and trained as an orchestral conductor in Germany. He moved to the United States in 1932 with his family and was the conductor of the Pasadena Symphony Orchestra from 1932 until his retirement in 1972. creator: Lert, Richard, 1885-1980 Biographical Note Richard Lert was born September 19, 1885, in Vienna, Austria. He trained as an orchestral conductor under Arthur Nikisch and began his career in Darmstadt, Germany, where he met and married his wife, Vicki Baum, in 1916. They had two sons. Lert held posts in Frankfurt, Kiel and Hannover before becoming the music director of the Berlin National Opera. Lert and his family moved to Los Angeles in 1932, where he became the music director of the Pasadena Symphony Orchestra. -

"Nun laube, Lindlein, laube!“ lll. “Seid ihr nicht der schwanendreher” Program Notes: Johannes Brahms (1833-1897) Brahms' Sonata No. 1 in E minor, Op. 38 is the first of two sonatas for piano and cello. It was begun in 1862 during Brahms' stay in the mountain village of Bad Munster am Stein-Ebernburg, where he wrote the first two movements and an Adagio movement, which was later dropped. After the existing finale was added in 1865, Brahms dedicated the completed sonata to his friend Josef Gansbacher, an amateur cellist and professor at the Singing Akademie in Vienna. The deep sonorities and the haunting melodies of the Allegro non troppo create a mood throughout the movement that is melancholic and sometimes wistful. The opening theme is a beautiful melody which rises from the depths of the cello's low E, soars for a few moments, then wanders its way back down the G and C strings to give way to the piano entrance. Brahms uses chromaticism to charm in the Allegretto quasi Minuetto. Chromatic melodies in F-sharp minor and A major sweep through the cello line, creating appropriately edgy dissonances on the strong beats of the measure. Sighing figures played three times in succession make up the only asymmetrical phrases in the entire piece. -

FEMALE CLASSICAL COMPOSERS from past to present ʻFreed from the shackles and tatters of the old tradition and prejudice, American and European women in music are now universally hailed as important factors in the concert and teaching fields and as … fast developing assets in the creative spheres of the profession.’ This affirmation was made in 1935 by Frédérique Petrides, the Belgian-born female violinist, conductor, teacher and publisher who was a pioneering advocate for women in music. Some 80 years on, it’s gratifying to note how her words have been rewarded with substance in this catalogue of music by women composers. Petrides was able to look back on the foundations laid by those who were well-connected by family name, such as Clara Schumann and Fanny Mendelssohn-Hensel, and survey the crop of composers active in her own time, including Louise Talma and Amy Beach in America, Rebecca Clarke and Liza Lehmann in England, Nadia Boulanger in France and Lou Koster in Luxembourg. She could hardly have foreseen, however, the creative explosion in the latter half of the 20th century generated by a whole new raft of female composers – a happy development that continues today. We hope you will enjoy exploring this catalogue that has not only historical depth but a truly international voice, as exemplified in the works of the significant number of 21st-century composers: be it the highly colourful and accessible American chamber music of Jennifer Higdon, the Asian hues of Vivian Fung’s imaginative scores, the ancient-and-modern syntheses of Sofia Gubaidulina, or the hallmark symphonic sounds of the Russian-born Alla Pavlova.
