Second Collection for Disaster Relief Our prayers go out to all of those who have experienced the devastation of Hurricane Florence and Hurricane Michael. While emergency outreach was immediate, we know the road to recovery and the rebuilding of communities will be long and additional support will be needed. Bishop Ricken is asking all parishes to conduct a second collection for Disasters 2018. Our collection will be held at all Masses this weekend. It will assist our brothers and sisters impacted by this devastation by providing humanitarian aid in the form of water, food, shelter, and medical care and supporting long term efforts to restore communities and the recon- struction needs of the church. Please make checks payable to Our Lady of Lourdes with “Disasters 2018”on the memo line.

THIRTY-SECOND SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME NOVEMBER 11, 2018 Life, Death, and Eternity. . . A Challenge

Peace,

As this time of the year, the changing of seasons, leaves are turning brilliant colors and falling to the ground. Nature reminds us of the reality of our life, the truth about the passing of things. No matter how colorful and attractive we are, we have to pass from this beautiful world.

For some of us, to speak/ think about the reality of death is very much uncomfortable, and at times frightening too. Whether we like it or not, no one living on the face of the earth can escape this reality.

What is this death?

There are two kinds of death. Death of the physical body is the separation of the soul from the body. Everyone has to go through this stage in God’s appointed time. This is a sure and certain reality that we can expect any time. The second kind of death is separation of God from the soul. This is very painful and unimaginable. In other words, this is eternal death. Anyone who rejects knowingly and willingly the salvation offered through the incarnation, holy passion, death and resurrection of Jesus will have to face this terrible death! Pay attention to the words of our Savior, “Whoever does not believe in the Son of God has already been condemned, because he has not believed in the name (Jesus) of the Only Son of God. . . whoever believes in the Son has eternal life, but whoever disobeys the Son will not see life.”(John 3:18, 36) Jesus continues to remind us that, “Whoever believes in me, even if he dies, will live, and everyone who lives and believes in me will never die.” (John 11:26) This clearly tells us that those who believe (this means living according to the Commandment of God, the Word of God) in Jesus, will surely have a life with God. That is, they will have eternal life, even though there will be physical death. Jesus says, “Whoever believes in me, even if he dies will live, and everyone who lives and believes in me will never die” (John 11:26; 1 John 5:11, 12, 20)

Having understood this, we are invited to focus on the ultimate purpose of our life here in this world, to prepare ourselves for the eternal life with God in the company of the saints and angels. A soul that loves God always wants to please the Will of the Father in everything and is awaiting the happy day of separation of the soul from this earthly dwelling tent (body). Such children of God will always say with joy and conviction, “For to me, life is Christ, and death is gain. . . I long to depart from this life and be with Christ for that is far better.” (Philippians 1:21, 23)

This is the reason holy soul St. Francis of Assisi welcomed death, joyfully calling death his sister, and embraced “sister death!” For those of us who are attached to the passing things of this world (vanity of vanities), death is a sad event. It’s very painful; it’s frightening; it’s the end of everything. But as disciples and followers of Jesus, we need to examine our lives constantly and humbly be willing to make necessary changes. We need to practice moderate detachment from people and things and “keep our eyes fixed on Jesus, the leader and perfector of faith.” (Hebrews 12:2)

As this month is especially dedicated to remembering and praying for our departed brothers and sisters, I recommend that you visit the cemetery as often as possible, praying for our beloved ones and meditating about the reality and beauty of death and life eternal. Teach our children and grandchildren about this truth. If possible, take them to the cemetery and explain things to them. Sow the seed. . . .

God bless everyone. Our Lady of Lourdes, pray for us!
