______
Now, at long last, the world of Islamic numismatics has been provided with a comprehensive compilation and guide to the first period of Islamic gold coinage from the time of the Umayyad caliph ‘Abd al-Malik bin Marwan until the deposition of the Abbasid caliph al-Mustakfi in 334 Hijra (946 CE). In addition to the gold coinage of the caliphates, the author covers those of the Aghlabids in Tunisia, the Fatimids and their partisans in North Africa and western Arabia, together with many of the dynasties in the eastern Islamic world which owed their actual or nominal allegiance to the Abbasid caliphs in Baghdad. All issues have been listed with their rulers, mints and dates meticulously recorded, with illustrations and legends provided. The author has also added indications of the coins' availability and rarity, which will be of great value to the dealer and collector. To substantiate each entry, extensive references have been included that cover all the major and minor public collections, auction catalogues, sales lists and private communications to the author. Giulio Bernardi's corpus is a labour of indefatigable and dedicated scholarship which puts all other such works in the shade. This book is a truly great achievement which should stand the test of time and will be used by the many people who have the good fortune to turn its pages from the time of its publication and in the years to come.

______EXEXAMPLES:AMPLES: This Corpus classifies the Islamic Gold Coinage of the first three centuries of the Hijra Era, analyzing in detail the mints and dates of about 20,000 examples recorded from about 500 collections. DOCUMENTS. This frame of reference gives historians the opportunity to consider the coins in relation to one another and to other documents. FORGERIES: The work appears at a time when Islamic coins can still be considered as authentic records, because this branch of numismatics has not yet been seriously contaminated by forgeries. HISTORY. I now place the Corpus at the disposal of historians and collectors, and step aside, having reduced the historical notes to a bare minimum. DIACRITICAL MARKS. For the sake of clarity the transcriptions of Arabic words in the Corpus have been written without any diacritical marks apart from the ‘ayn, which is a letter in its own right, and the hamza (‘) which is frequently needed to differentiate one syllable from another. OBVERSE/REVERSE. In order to easily find date and mint, I did not tackle the Problem of the Obverse and Reverse in Islamic Numismatics (see: J. L. Bachahrach and H. A. Awad, Numismatic Chronicle 7th series Volume: 13-1973, p. 184-191). In all the descriptions I simply placed on the left the face of the coin where the date and the mint are inscribed.
ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS. I have been thinking about and writing this Corpus for a very long time and have incurred many debts along the way. It is a pleasure to record them here. Steve Album (Santa Rosa), Jere L. Bacharach (Washington), Michael Bates (New York), Mu’tasim Bilbeisi (Amman), Cécil Bresc (Paris), Bruno Callegher (Trieste), Andrew de Clermont (London), Giorgio Conetti (Trieste), Robert and Elisabeth Darley-Doran (Winchester), Stefan Heidemann (Jena), Lutz Ilisch (Tübingen), Stephen Lloyd (London), Mauro Lo Monaco (Roma), George Lotfi (Paris), Enrico Leuthold (Milano), Mario Maugeri (Siracusa), Giuseppe Di Martino (Palermo), Cécile Morrisson (Washington), Norman Doug Nicol (Oxford), Riad Nsirat (Trieste), Audrey Peli (Paris), Venetia Porter (London), François Thierry (Paris), Romolo Vescovi (Rabat), Tim Wilkes (Battle), made their coins and numismatic knowledge available to me, and also helped me enormously with conversation, ideas, encouragement, intellectual stimulation and, last but not least, very important corrections. CORPUS. With the publication of this Corpus I hope to achieve, within the bounds of my abilities, an initial step to what, as novice scholar and numismatist, I had hoped in vain to find in the extensive bibliography dedicated to Arab-Islamic coins; that is to say an analytic catalogue of all the known types, which records both mints and dates for each type.
6 With his Synoptischen Tabellen (Z in the bibliography) Eduard von Zambaur laid the foundations for this type of research and Steve Album, with his Checklist, made an excellent contribution to establishing a synoptic frame. Other scholars have explored single dynasties or individual mints, however, a universal typological inventory listing has remained an unsatisfied wish. As I continued my research, I realized that this work could not be achieved by one scholar alone: I therefore thought it necessary to narrow my field and decided to start with the gold coinage. Later on I also decided to shortened the time frame, limiting it to the period ending with the deposition of the 22nd Abbasid caliph, al-Mustakfi in 333- 334H = 944-946C) THE DATE 334334HHHH is not a random choice. This year marks a major turning point in the history of Arab/Islamic coins: the downfall of Abbasid temporal rule, the rise of both the Buwayhid dynasty in Iraq and Iran and and the establishment of the Isma’ili Shi'ite Fatimid caliphs in Africa, as well as the resumption of gold coinage in Umayyad Spain, coincide with an evident diffusion of money patterns throughout the Arab world. After this date, the weight of each coin loses the uniformity that was typical of the preceding period. The subsequent coinage of the last fifteen Abbasid caliphs loses a great part of its significance as t h e leading thread of the whole minting system, and reveals the progressive fragmentation which leads to monetary chaos. The cataloguing method used in this first volume cannot, therefore, be applied to the subsequent p e r i o d . The very definition , and consequently the description of the “type” has to be changed in the following volumes of this Corpus. RARITY. Only a ten thousandth part of the huge bulk of gold coins minted in the name of Allah, from the seventh century (Common Era) to al-Mustakfi's reign, escaped the fire of the melting pot and still survives today. In the five hundred collections I have scrutinized, I have registered about twenty thousand dinars struck up to 334H = 946C. I h a v e classified all of them in this first attempt at a Corpus, which undoubtedly still has many gaps. Only a few types are evidenced by more than one hundred specimens, whilst more than half are testified by three coins or fewer. The dinars I found in one single specimen form about 40% of this Corpus. Allow me then this paradox: it is not a rarity to meet a rare dinar.

concordances
25 The concordances are indispensable to link the Corpus with previous Catalogues. Here I would like to express my thanks to my friend Michael Bates, eminent scholar of Islamic coinage and for many years curator of the Collection of Islamic Coins at the American Numismatic Society, one of the most important in the world. Michael has always encouraged me to attempt to write this corpus. In 2001 he gave me an important study device: the printout of the files concerning the Pre-Mongol Islamic gold coins in the ANS collection. There are 3,318 coins, one third of which are in the first volume of this Corpus, forming 5% of its content. As a shukr I dedicate a concordance to him, where I compare my Corpus with the ANS inventory number of the coins described in the classical work: Rare Islamic Coins by George C. Miles, New York, 1950 (Numismatic Notes and Monographs No. 118, abbreviation: ric). Miles’ book has been one of the reasons of my interest in the study of coins with Kufic legends. concordANcE: ric-ans-dates-cORPUS

The coins not only record the rulers, but also those who held the actual power: lieutenants, officials, amirs, leaders, commanders, generals, heirs apparent, usurpers, tyrants and rebels. Many of the people named in the Arabic gold coins belong to their own dynasty, for before the Crusades more than one hundred dynasties handed down the supremacy from father to son in different periods and places. We find members of twenty-seven dynasties (index 5) within the historical period covered in the first volume of this Corpus.

(ab) ABBASIDS (No. from 51 to 361) In the first volume of this Corpus the dinars are described in chronological order and, whenever possible, assembled under the name of the caliph inscribed on them. The caliph held power at the summit of the Arab–Islamic empire, both as ruler and spiritual guide. The caliphs mentioned in this first volume are the Umayyads followed by the Abbasids. The Abbasids, kin of the powerful Quraysh tribe of Makka, were descended from al-'Abbas, an uncle of the Prophet. They therefore they considered themselves superior to the Umayyads, at least among the orthodox Sunnis. Already, during the Umayyad caliphate they had shown great adroitness in both unravelling government issues and in dealing with the newly emerging social classes. In 132H=750C, the Abbasids seized the Caliphate taruler advantage of the revolutionary movement in Khorasan (in eastern Iran). Once in power, they moved their capital to Madinat al-Salam (Baghdad), thus shifting the heart of the civil world towards the east. The first type of dinar with a single marginal inscription on each side and lacruler any mention of the mint, lasted until al- Ma'mun’s reform in 206H. However this type had already been employed by the Aghlabids since 189H and it continued for a further hundred years. In order to meet the expenses of both a sumptuous court and a swarm of bureaucrats, the Abbasid caliphs had to contract out the collection of taxes. As a result a new and extremely powerful oligarchy arose, because the economic wealth overlapped with military power. The caliphs became puppets in the hands of their generals who often decided on both their election and their deposition. The command of the army had already been taken over by the Turkish combative soldiers who, up until that time, had formed its troops. The Caliph's rulerty continued, though reduced to sikka and khutba (the right to be named on coins and in the Friday bidding prayer) even after the progressive exclusion from any power in the political, economic or military fields that was imposed on him by those officers and soldiers whom he had recruited to help him govern his empire. Thirty-seven Abbasid caliphs (of whom twenty-two are included in this volume) succeeded one another until the sack of Madinat al-Salam by the Mongols (656H = 1254C). At the beginning of the second millennium (Common Era) the Abbasid caliphs were opposed by the Spanish Umayyads and the Fatimids, who declared themselves caliphs. The early dinars of these anti-caliphs are included in this volume.
(ab+) (No. 174) The name of an Amir NIHRIR appears on all the dinars struck in 258H = 871C at the Egyptian mint of Misr. According to al-‘Ush (Qatar, vol I Doha, 1984, No. 1287) Nihrir al-Adim was the financial supervisor who had been appointed on the orders of the caliph's brother, al-Muwaffaq.
(ag) AGHLABIDS (No. 119-147) were the first local rulers to omit the name of the Caliph on their dinars. These were struck in both Tunisia and Sicily and were current throughout the whole Mediterranean area. I have placed the description of the Aghlabid dinars in a compact group, following the seventh caliph al- Ma’mun, to highlight their fidelity to the first Abbasid dinar type, with only one marginal inscription on each side. In the year 184H = 800C Ibrahim bin al-Aghlab, founder of the dynasty, reached an agreement with the Abbasid caliph Harun al-Rashid that recognized his independence. Before this time he had brought honour to the position of governor of the province on the central African coast of the Mediterranean, and had realized that while those regions no longer needed the support of the Baghdad government, it was possible to mantain their relationship with the caliphate as a vassal. By the terms of this new agreement Ibrahim renounced the aid he had expected, and pledged to pay Harun al-Rashid 40,000 dinars annualy. In change he was given autonomy in the management of resources and the right to designate his heir. Ibrahim and his ten heirs consolidated their government in Ifriqiya (more or less today’s Tunisia) subduing the rebel Berbers. Supporting education and progress, he gave started off a period of prosperity and culture. Ziyadat Allah, son of Ibrahim and third Aghlabid Amir, lead (from the 217H = 827C) a victoriously campaign against the Byzantine in Sicily, where from then on the Arabic culture flourished for two hundred fifty years, till the Norman conquest. The Aghlabid coinage followed the Abbasid model. The coins were nearly all characterized by the inscription of the root = GHALAB, which means “victory” and this became the motto of the Aghlabid dynasty. The dinars are similar to those of Harun al-Rashid, with the name of the Aghlabid Amir (except for the anonymous first one) and, in the margin, the date (but never the mint).
57 (al) 'ALIDS (No. 362-370) professed the Shi'a faith and therefore omitted the name of the sunni Abbasid caliph on their coinage. On the northern border of the Iranian Plateau, the highest massif in the land, the Elburz dominates Tabaristan on the coast of the Caspian Sea. Tehran (known on the dinars as al-Rayy or al- Muhammadiya) is in western Tabaristan and Jurjan is in the east. Both cities were fiercely contended by numerous Islamic dynasties. The dinars of both these mints give evidence of many different governments, among which are the 'Alids. The dinars they struck are difficult to classify because of their unusual inscriptions, which are not easily read. The first classification of the dinar, No. 369Ms in the catalogue, was carried out by the expert Miles (nhr 160C), but it had to be rectified by later numismatists.
(bw) BUWAYHIDS (1 No. 334, 2 No. 361). The large and influential family of the Buwayhids is the most famous among the Daylamite dynasties. Their power expanded through the greater parts of Iran and Iraq between 320H = 932C and 454H = 1062C, but was always divided among rival branches, often in disagreement with one another. As a result the state was governed by a galaxy of local rulers, nominally in submission to the most important Buwayhid Amir, who in most cases was the ruler of Baghdad or Shiraz. The coins mention the name of the local ruler, together with that of his overlord (i.e. his closest higher ranruler relative) and finally the Abbasid caliph. Sometimes we find a fourth name belonging to an ally or a rival, who would always be a member of the family. In addition to these we sometimes read a further name or the qunya of the caliph's designated heir. As it is often difficult to identify who actually controlled the mint it is often necessary to resort to historical and traditional sources. The dynasty is known as the Buwayhids in Arabic and as Buyyd in Persian. This volume only includes the earliest rare dinars struck before 334H.
(dl) DULAFIDS (1 Nos. 200-204, 2 No. 217) The Dulafid Governors in Iran are known to have been independent rulers between 256H = 879C and 284H = 897C . Their dinar are very rare.
(ac) AMIRS of CRETE (1 No. 190, 2 No. 236) A line of Arabic amirs, descendent from a certain Shu'ayb, ruled in Crete from 213H = 828C until the reconquest of the island by Nikephorus Phoca in around 350H = 961C. Apart from some numismatic evidence, including dinars struck between 271H and 293H, there are very few historical or archeological references to the Amirs of Crete.
(as) AMIR OF SICILY (No. 148-149). The Aghlabid Ziyadat Allah III, unable to control the riots that had broken out in Sicily, escaped with all his treasure to the Abbasid court in Egypt, where he remained untill his death. An Arab noble, Ahmad bin Ziyadat Allah bin Qurtub, replaced him as Amir of Sicily. He ruled the Island justly for three years (302-304H = 912-916C) until he was killed by the Fatimids under al- Mahdi. This was the first and last independent Arab state in Sicily.
(at) TURKISH AMIR (No. 205-206) Adhkutekin, a Turkish captain and former governor of Mosul, established an independent principality in Hamadhan and Qazwin during the reign of the Abbasid caliph al- Mu'tamid.
(fa) FATIMIDS (No. 381-391) This Shi'ite dynasty, which originated in northern Iran, initially flourished in the Maghrib. They conquered Aghlabid controlled Ifriqiya in 297H = 909C and seized Egypt in 358H = 969C, where they founded their new capital al-Qahira. Fatimid rule lasted for more than two centuries, until the Ayyubid Nasir Salah al-din Yusuf (Saladin) brought it to an end in 567H = 1171C.
(ha) HAMDANIDS (No. 310-313) This dynasty ruled in Syria and al-Jazira (the "island" between the Tigris and the Euphrates) during the 4th century H (= 10th century Common era). It was composed of two branches, with capitals in Halab and al-Mawsil. Nasir al-Dawla al-Hasan, the Hamdanid ruler of al-Mawsil, was chosen by the Abbasid caliph to oversee the administration of Madinat al-Salam (Baghdad) and given the title of Amir al-Umara (“Commander of Commanders”). Together with his brother Sayf al-Dawla, he brought about some reforms, including that of the coinage, but after a short time he was driven out by the Buwayhids a had to retire to Mosul. Sayf al-Dawla conquered Halab and Hims, where the Ikhshidids had reigned, he then established his court in Halab and became one of the most famous rulers through his patronage of men of letters and poets.
58 (hr) HARTHAMIDS (1 No. 208, 2 No. 218) Only one member of this dynasty is named on their coinage: Rafi' bin Harthama, governor of Nishapur from 268H = 882C, and then of al-Rayy (al-Muhammadiya), where he had the great mosque of al-Mahdi rebuilt, 120 years after its foundation. Although serious conflicts with Mahmud bin Ziyad forced him to flee eastwards, he continued to be named as governor on the coins for some time. He was killed by the Saffarids in Khwarizm in 283H.
(ik) IKHSHIDIDS (1 No. 314-317, 2 No. 342) This dynasty originated in central Asia and ruled Egypt and Syria for thirty-five years (from 323H = 935C to 358H = 969C). The word Ikhshid which probably meant ruler, had its pre-Islamic origins in Sughd (Transoxiana). The letter T is often found on the earliest coins, which stands for Tughdj, the father of al-Ikhshid and patriarch of the family. According to Jere L. Bacharach (B06 in the bibliography) the gold coins struck in Misr and Filastin from 323H onwards are Ikhshidid, although they only bear the name of the caliph. While I have no reason to doubt this, I prefer to list these coins in the series of the preceding caliphal issues, even though they were actually struck by an Ikhshidid Amir. The first dinar with the name of an Ikhshidid ruler is dated 328H (No. 316Gn), but it must have been struck some time later, because it bears the name of the Abbasid caliph al-Muttaqi, who acceded to the caliphate five days after his brother al-Radi's death on Rabi' 21, 329H = December 24, 940C.
(kd) KURDS (1 No. 296, 2 No. 317) Throughout their long history, the Kurds have been known for their belligerence and tribal feeling which delayed their early conversion to Islam. Their warlike values were exploited by those seeruler political offices in the court of the caliphate. Some rare dinars from mints in Azerbaijan bear the names of Kurdish chiefs.
(ra) RASSIDS (No. 371-377) The Rassids, chiefs of a shi'ite sect from the Iranian coast of the Caspian Sea, went to the Yemen as missionaries, giving themselves the title of Imam. They ruled for over 1000 years, from 284H = 898C until the declaration of the Republic in 1382H = 1962C. The dinars they struck in Sa'da in 298H continued as a "frozen” type with minor variations for many years, and they struck an issue in the name of the Fatimid Caliph al-Mahdi nine years later (No. 377)
(sa) SAMANIDS (1 No. 220-223, 2 No. 234-235, 3 No. 267-272, 4 No. 282, 5 300-302, 6 No. 326-332, 7 No. 349-359) In 250H = 864C the Samanids, who were governors in the service of the Abbasid caliphs, became one of the most important independent dynasties, with Bukhara as their capital city. Their coins were struck, according to Islamic tradition, in both precious and base metals. The copper fulus served as small local change and referred to the Samanid ruler as amir or malik, omitting the name of the caliph, while the gold and silver coins gave prominence to the name of the Abassid caliph, which was followed by that of the Samanid ruler. These coins were usually well struck with clear marginal inscriptions and of elegant design. A number of them were signed by the die engravers. The first known Samanid dinar were minted by the third governor, Isma’il bin Ahmad (279-295H = 892-907C). A plentiful number of these issues continued to be struck until the Samanid territories were divided between the Qarakhanids and the Ghaznawids in 395H = 1005C.
(sf) SAFFARIDS (1 No. 197-199, 2 No. 258, 3 No. 298, 4 No. 321-323, 5 No. 345) The name of this dynasty comes from the profession of its founder, a coppersmith (saffar in Persian), who devoted his life to military and political ventures. The dynasty began in 247H and lasted for 200 years until the seizure of its lands by the Saljuqs. It then revived and lasted until the Mongol invasion. Historians divide Saffarifd history into four periods, only the first two of which struck dinars.
(sj) SAJIDS (No. 1 216, 2 No. 232-233, 3 No. 250-255, 4 No. 281, 5 No. 294) The Sajids, who came from Sughd (Transoxiana) served as governors of the caliphal dominions in north-western Persia and converted to Islam. They established their headquarters in Azerbaijan and went on seize the Armenian territories of the Bagratids and other princes. They ruled for four decades and encouraged the spread of Islamic culture and politics in the Armenian provinces and in the trans-Caucasian east.
(sk) SU'LUKIDS (1 No. 260-263, 2 No. 299) This Iranian family briefly controlled al-Rayy (also known as al-Muhammadiya). They struck dinars of the Abbasid type, and occasionally came under Samanid rulerty. They very likely held office as prefects for the caliphs.

(tu) TULUNIDS (1: No. 191-194, 2: No. 213-215, 3: No. 230) The Tulunid dynasty reigned in Egypt for 38 years (254-292H = 868-905C) and followed the Aghlabid example by establishing their own autonomy within the Baghdad caliphate. They extended their power to Palestine and Syria, taruler advantage of the problems faced by al-Muwaffaq, military commander and brother of the caliph al-Mutamid, who was suppressing the Zanj revolt against the Abbasids in southern Iraq. Tulunid coins followed the Abbasid pattern in their inscriptions and the inclusion of the names of the designated heirs. The name of the Tulunid ruler did not appear on the dinars until 265H (eleven years after the foundation of this dynasty). To simplify the cataloguing, however, the coins struck before 265H are included with those of the Abbasids, even though the issuer was Ahmad bin Tulun.
(uq) UQAYLIDS (No. 195) This Bedouin dynasty ruled in al-Jazira and part of Syria during the 11th century Common Era (4th-5th H). A hundred years earlier one of their forebears declared his independence in the city of Qarqisiya where he struck dinars dated 275H. He managed this by placing himself under the protection of Muhammad, a Sajid commander in the service of the Abbasid caliph in the wars against the Tulunids.
(um) UMAYYADS (No. 1-48) This dynasty ruled all of the Arab Islamic territories from 41H = 661C to 132H = 750C, with its center in Syria. The Umayyad caliphs never inscribed their names on their dinars. All but one prince of this dynasty was massacred by the Abbasids in 132H = 740 (see below)
(us) SPANISH UMAYYADS In 138H = 756C the Umayyad 'Abd al-Rahman escaped the Abbasids' massacre and reached Spain, where he established his court in Seville and Cordoba. A period of great prosperity began in these two cities. Under ‘Abd al-Rahman Cordoba camo to match Baghdad in luxury and wealth with the construction of the Great Mosque and many public building and private palaces. The city became a prominent center of culture, trade, industry and especially science. No dinars were struck in Spain in the following two centuries. It was not until 317H that 'Abd al-Rahman III, competing with his Fatimid rivals, issued high quality dinars and their fractions (the latter of which did not fall within a definite metrological system).
(wa) WAJIHIDS (No. 304) Because of the scarcity of historical references to 'Oman, the coins are important documents. Silver dirhems date back to the Umayyad period, while the first known dinars are dated 328H. They bear the names of the Wajihid amirs, who ruled as governors for the Abbasid caliphs.
(za) ZANJ (No. 53, mule, extra catalogue after No. 151, No. 362) This dynasty gave its name to the island of Zanzibar. The Africans who had been brought to Iraq to turn the salt deposits into arable fields, led by their Imam 'Ali bin Muhammad, rebelled against the Abbasid caliphs. The first rising was in 70H = 689- 690C, the second revolt took place five years later and the third revolt caused a violent disturbances over fifteen years (255-270H = 869-883C). The majority of their coins were struck at al-Mukhtara, a mint in southern Iraq. Other coins were issued by a travelling mint called Mu'askar-al-imam or 'Askar al-imam.
(zy) ZIYARIDS (No. 242Mq 318H = No. 256, No. 280, No. 297) Among the bold soldiers who came from the remote mountain region of Daylam, on the south-eastern border of the Caspian Sea, the Ziyarites stood out for their belligerence and strength. These qualities allowed the two brothers Mardawij bin Ziyar and Wushmgir bin Ziyar to extend their dominion as far as Isbahan and Hamadhan. Mardawij was murdered by his own soldiers and his brother fought in the conflicts between the Samanids and the Buwayhids, who were competing for the guardianship of the caliph and control of Iran and Trasoxiana.
