Human Population Growth -The Cause Of AU Environmental Problems? The problems facing our environment are increasing and these are mostly man made. There are pollution problems from increased road trafTic in urban areas, there is more sewage and waste being produced and dumped in our rivers and seas. There are high levels of unemployment in many countries and there will never be enough jobs for everyone (so why moan when people are on the dole). There are great food shortages in some countries and green areas like forests are being lost by the 100 square Kin every day. So why have we ail these problems ?.Well I say that the main cause is the high growth rate of the human population in the world because, ifyou think about it, more people equals more cars on the road, more food needed and an increase in sewage and other wastes and then the need for more houses, so more green area lost. The worlds population is at present 5.5 billion people and did you know that 250,000 people are born each day which need to be fed and sheltered. The death rate is not high enough to counteract this due to increased knowledge in medicine and technology. Have we advanced too far? It is predicted that in the year 2050 there will be 15 billion people on the planet and this will^ause very serious problems for us .

/ The problem is that we demand a high standard of living good water supplies and food but can we keep supplying this for ever as the population increases. When we talk about a comet hitting the earth or the sun dying out people show more interest and concern even though the chances of the first are slim and the second won't happen for billions of years. The increase in population will concern us ail and within 50 years ,which is not that long. I think more éducation is needed as some weird suggestions of mass stérilisation of the working class is just in humane. In china the one child policy is good in theory but in practice you have girls left on the streets and in homes and so the system does not work. I really do think thôugh that if nothing is done then wars or famine or a new disease will occur as the earth cannot take the stress of over population for ever. It would be nice if we could do something though before we get to that dreadfiil state .

Traidcraft One of Green Society's projects this year has been selling Traidcraft products in support of the organisation Traidcraft. Traidcraft is an organisation that actively supports fair trade practices, which essentially means that producers receive a fair price for their work. Fair trade practices respect the rights of the worker by justly compensating them for their skills and traditional work they perform. Traidcraft products come from Africa, Asia, and Latin America, regions otherwise referred to as the 'third world.' The organisation stresses that fair trade practices are part of a continuing solution to help resolve existing problems faced by poor communities in the 'third world.' Many people have already managed to improve their own and their children's health and living conditions by being involved with Traidcraft. Already people are seeing a better future for themselves and their children: many are being able to send their children to school or evening class when this was otherwise impossible. Others now have an easier time paying for food and medical care. Workers have also been positive about Traidcraft because it has allowed them to broaden their talents and increase their skills.

By buying products from Traidcraft, you can be assured that the producer is personally benefiting from the money you spend. Clothes, housewares, paper and cards, food, teas, coffees, and jewellery are all just some of the items sold by Traidcraft. Green Society will be making another order from Traidcraft soon. If you have any questions or would like to look at the catalogue to see if you want to get involved with the order, call Mark x2J78 or Nikkix20J5 during office hours. Amy

Green Society, Students' Union, University of Surrey. Si:rrey GU2 5XH WWWhtlp://ww\v.ee.siirrey.ac.uk/Societies/greensoc/ E-Mail; [email protected] TREE HOUSES IN YOUR BACK YARD - Guildford's Road Protest Camp There is much concern in Britain over destruction of rainforests yet in our own back yard we continue to chip away at the countryside.

Surrey County Council plan to widen and straighten the A320 Woking Road, an ulterior reason being to provide access for 300 lorries a day to the proposed site of two waste incinerators. It will involve several changes including sections of dual carriage way and a new stretch of road between Hazel Avenue and Salt Box Road which will cut right through the beautiful woodland and open spaces of Stringers Common. 221 mature Oak trees and countless younger ones will be destroyed. The pond at Salt Box Road will be "relocated" causing damage and death to aquatic life (can a pond and its diverse habitat really be relocated?).

The council is obliged to give back to the community land of equal size and quality, but the land to be given in exchange is already Green Belt, they will simply change the name to Common Land so no new green space will be created.

ft. Vii. ^

This short sighted form of traffic management will simply shift the problem further into town where the road is narrow and built up. Also the scheme will make the road more attractive to commuters and lorries, increasing congestion and pollution (especially from diesel lorries). However there is another threat to lives, the councils own figures show that it is faster straighter roads that are the cause of more serious accidents; Where as many people simply ignore speed limit signs the present curve of the road forces traffic to slow down.

How can the council justify spending £2,651,000 on such an ill conceived and unnecessary road scheme that will only generate more traffic and pollution, and destroy an area of natural beauty and wildlife?

A road protest camp with sub-sections 'Hairy Mog', 'Pettle', 'Yoghurt', and Canibalistic' has been set up on the common, tree houses galore ! If you want to know more check out the net page at:-

http://www.geocities.com/rainforest/4452/hairymog.html This site is within easy walking distance of Hazel Farm so if you are interested go along and have a look or even join in! They are extremely friendly people, who will gladly show you round the camp, take them some food (veggy only) or even help them build tree houses.

Eleanor Join in With Greensoc! The Green Society is a group of like minded individuals with an interest in issues relating to the environment in the broadest sense of the word.

As a group we have increased awareness of these issues, both here on campus and in the local community. This year activities have included:

• Organising the purchase of Traidcraft products mainly sold to our own members but also sold to other members of the University. f-" • Visit to road protest demonstrations including Newbury (January) and lobbying Parliament in support of the Road Traffic Reduction Bill. • Inviting a County Council Recycling Officer down to the University to talk to us about issues relating to recycling. We have had a few social excursions, curry night, ice skating etc. on a social basis and are planning to have a day out in the New Forest this weekend. We have an e-mail list for members who cannot make our meetings but would like to know what we are getting up to.

We meet once a week Thursdays at 7.30 p.m. usually in one of the rooms in teaching block. Ifyou would like to find out more check out our website on the internet (see bottom of page), leave a message in our pigeon hole in the Union or contact Mark Oliver (572235 at home, ext. 2178 at work).

ifyou are interested in the kinds of issues discussed in this pull-out or the events organised for this week -see front cover for details - I'm sure you can benefit and contribute to our group. So please Join in! !
