A hemp powered car will be touring N. America this summer. It's goal is to prove the viability of hemp as fuel, and promote environmental fuel technologies and drug law reform. The car will attend environmental festivals, such as SolFest, and drug law reform events. Biofuels have been gaining popularity recently. Joshua and Kaia Tickell toured America using fryer grease to power their van. This is a great idea for recycling oil. Biodiesel can be used in any unmodified diesel en- gine. Hemp Car will be using hemp oil converted into biodiesel. This is a monumental task, as hemp is illegal to grow in the U.S. and the oil is extremely expensive. The Hemp Car crew say they chose to u s e hemp because of it's potential to replace petrol fuels. It is esti- mated that if 6% of America's marginal land was planted over with hemp, it could provide for all of America's energy needs. Pyrolysis is the technology which makes this possible. Pyrolysis is a method that heats plant matter in an oxygen-free environment. The plant mat- ter is reduced to individual constituents such as; combustible gases, con- densable liquids, oil, and char. All of these constituents can be used as fuel. Lynn Osburn wrote an excellent paper on biomass fuels entitled, Energy Farming in America. The hemp plant has no psychoactive properties. Cultivating hemp can help replenish spent soil. Hemp can grow almost anywhere, and requires far less pesticides than many other cash crops, such as cotton. Hemp can be used for fuel, fiber, food, medicine, and industry. Hemp seed is highly nutri- tious. Hemp fiber is durable and strong. Extractums made from hemp were a valued medicine for thousands of years, but prohibition in the 1930s ended all of that. Why was this valuable renew- able resource prohibited? Evidence suggests a special-interest group that included the DuPont petrochemical company, Secretary of the Treasury Andrew Mellon (Dupont's major financial backer), and the newspaper man William Randolph Hearst mounted a yellow journalism campaign against hemp. Hearst deliberately confused psychoactive marijuana with industrial hemp, one of humankind's oldest and most useful resources. DuPont and Hearst were heavily invested in timber and petro- leum resources, and saw hemp as a threat to their empires. Petroleum companies also knew that petroleum emits noxious, toxic byproducts when incompletely burned, as in an auto engine. In 1937 DuPont, Mellen and Hearst were able to push a "marijuana" prohibition bill through Congress in less than three months, which destroyed the domestic hemp industry. Fear driven myths about hemp and marijuana have kept these plants from providing society with much needed alternatives to current consumer habits. Hemp Car hopes to help expel these myths and show the true hemp plant to N.American society. Canada's recent withdraw of hemp prohibition is a big step toward global reform. People must keep working to see common sense become reality. Die Zugspitze May - June 2001 • Volume 27 Issue No. 3 Page 9 Page 10 Die Zugspitze May-June 2001 • Volume 27 Issue No. 3 Page 9 Know the Code of the Road - Reading Between the Lines on the Road

Do you know the code on the road? Test your literacy. from Car & Travel Monthly Magazine - http://www.aaany.com) by Joseph D. Younger

Flat art adorns nearly every strip of blacktop beneath your wheels. The lines, arrows and words painted on the pavement tell you a lot about the road you're driving on. Unlike the signs and signals beside the roadway, however, the markings on the roadway convey their messages subtly. In fact, you probably roll over them without even noticing, though they affect your safety in a big way.

How well can you read between the lines on the roadway? Test your literacy by answering the questions below. 1. On a long cross-country drive, you exit the highway for a cup of coffee. When you're fully caffeinated, you head back for the highway. On the entrance ramp, you notice a solid yellow line running along the right edge of the pavement and a solid white line running along the left. What should you do? a.Turn around immediately. b.Slow down and proceed with caution. c.Accelerate quickly to merge with freeway traffic ahead. d.Stop right where you are. If you answered anything but "a," you need another cup of coffee. Yellow lines usually separate traffic moving in opposite directions. A solid yellow line always marks the left edge of divided roadways and exit or entrance ramps. A solid white line always marks the right edge. If you ever see yellow to your right, you know you're headed into oncoming traffic. Remember "white on the right."

2. True or False: You may never legally cross double solid yellow lines. As you recall, yellow separates traffic moving in opposite directions. A broken yellow line next to a solid yellow line in your lane indicates "no passing" in your lane; a double solid yellow line means no passing in either direction. Cross it, and you run the risk of a head-on collision. However, there is one-and only one-situation in which you're permitted to cross a double solid yellow line: when turning left into a driveway or business entrance. (At an intersection the lines will disappear at the cross street and resume on the other side of the intersection. The answer is “ False.”

3. You're in the same situation as in Question 1-on a trip, in an unfamiliar area, trying to find an entrance ramp to re-enter the highway after a rest stop-except that now darkness has fallen. Heading toward the highway on the entrance ramp, you notice reflective red pavement markings along the right edge of the road. You should: a.Move to the left, to keep the reflectors on your left. b.Remain in your lane and proceed with caution. c.Stop short at the first red reflector. d.Get off the road and turn around. Pray that you never see this sight. Get off the road immediately and turn around ("d") because you're headed into oncoming traffic on an exit ramp. Reflectors often help delineate the edges of the pavement, and they're color-coded just like edge lines (white on the right, yellow on the left). Most reflectors nowadays shine red on the opposite side to warn drivers when they're going the wrong way.

4. You're headed down an entrance ramp, onto a highway with a weave lane-one shared by vehicles entering the freeway and those exiting it. To your left, a broad triangular area with white crosshatches tapers to a solid white line. The solid white line turns into a broken white line, then becomes solid again near the far (exit) ramp. At which point should you merge onto the freeway? a.At the beginning of the white crosshatched area. b.At the end of the crosshatched area, over the solid white line. c.Over the broken white line. d.It doesn't matter, so long as you find a break in traffic. Think of a solid white line as a solid wall that keeps you from changing lanes. In this case, it's meant to do just that- discourage you from changing lanes too suddenly, giving you enough distance to accelerate and merge safely. Although crossing a solid white line isn't illegal, it's almost always unsafe. You should cross after the solid white line ends, over the broken white line, when a gap in traffic presents itself (making the correct answer "c"). Remember, in a weave lane, through traffic and vehicles exiting the highway have the right-of-way over vehicles entering. May-June 1999• Volume 25 Issue No. 3
