INFORMATION TO USERS While the most advanced technology has been used to photograph and reproduce this manuscript, the quality of the reproduction is heavily dependent upon the quality of the material submitted. For example: • Manuscript pages may have indistinct print. In such cases, the best available copy has been filmed. • Manuscripts may not always be complete. In such cases, a note will indicate that it is not possible to obtain missing pages. • Copyrighted material may have been removed from the manuscript. In such cases, a note will indicate the deletion. Oversize materials (e.g., maps, drawings, and charts) are photographed by sectioning the original, beginning at the upper left-hand corner and continuing from left to right in equal sections with small overlaps. Each oversize page is also filmed as one exposure and is available, for an additional charge, as a standard 35mm slide or as a 17”x 23” black and white photographic print. Most photographs reproduce acceptably on positive microfilm or microfiche but lack the clarity on xerographic copies made from the microfilm. For an additional charge, 35mm slides of 6”x 9” black and white photographic prints are available for any photographs or illustrations that cannot be reproduced satisfactorily by xerography. ABSTRACT OF GRADUATE RESEARCH Dissertation Andrews U n iversity School of Graduate Studies T it le : A CORRELATIONAL STUDY OF JUNGIAN PSYCHOLOGICAL TYPES AND NINETEEN SPIRITUAL GIFTS. Name of researcher: Chek Yat Phoon Name and degree of fa c u lty advisor: Roy C. Naden, Ed.D. Date completed: July, 1986 Problem No known study had examined the co rrelatio n between the Jungian psychological types and spiritual gifts. The purpose of this study was to investigate the possible c o rrela tio n between the Jungian psychological types and a selection of 19 spiritual gifts of the New Testament. Method This study employed two instruments to measure the psycho!ogi cal types and 19 spiritual gifts: The Myers-Briggs Type Indicator and The S p iritu al G ifts Inventory. The data which were computed and ana lyzed to te s t 38 null hypotheses were provided by a to ta l of 430 1 Reproduced with permission of the copyright owner. Findings 1. The older the person, the more likely he will manifest the gifts of evangelism, faith, giving, hospitality, intercession, know ledge, prophecy and teaching. 2. The extraverted-',-nsing-feeling-judgment (ESFJ) type is more common among those with the gifts of prophecy, pastoring, hospita lity , and exhortation. 3. Specifically for males: a. The extraverted-intuitive (EN) type is more common among those with gifts of hospitality, administration, mercy, and apostleship. b. The extraverted-intuitive-thinking-judgment (ENTJ) type is more common among those having gifts of adminis tration, apostleship, and teaching. c. The extraverted-thinking (ET) type is more common among those having the g ift of evangelism. d. The extraverted-feeling-judgment (EFJ) type is more common among those having the g ift of pastoring. e. The introverted-sensing (IS) type is more common among those with gifts of helps and intercession. f. The intuitive-judgment (NJ) type is mnre '•ommon with the g if t of knowledge. Reproduced with permission of the copyright owner. Further reproduction prohibited without permission. 3 g. The thinking-perceptive (TP) type is more common among those having the g if t of wisdom. 4. Specifically for females: The extraverted type is more common among those having gifts of exhortation, administration, and fa ith . Conclusions This study validates that psychological types are relevant predictors for 16 of the 19 spiritual gifts. It infers that gifts of intercession and helps are more practical for one-to-one ministeries. It appears that the higher the self-perception of spiritual maturity, the higher is the perception of spiritual giftedness. Finally, it suggests that only the g ift of faith is more conr’'-; among women, but gifts of administration, apostleship, evangelism, knowledge, patoring, and teaching are more common to men.
