Research Area: Empowering of Women in Gram Panchayat Level The concept of empowerment of women is one of the most important social issues in the present century. It is a burning issue not only all over the world but also in India. In the present day society we speak of women empowerment and it has become a burning topic for discussion everywhere. In today's society all of us speak of women empowerment. It has become the cry of the day. Empowerment is the process by which the women achieve increase control and participation in decision making which in turn helps to achieve equal basis which men in various spheres political, economical, social, cultural and civil. It involves the building up of a society wherein women can breathe without the fear of oppression, exploitation, apprehension, discrimination and the general feeling of persecution which goes with being a woman in a traditionally male dominated structure. Gram Panchayat is the most vital part of Panchayati Raj Institutions. Although Panchayats have been in continuation in India since earliest times, they suffered a setback during British rule. Gram Panchayat is the lowest level Panchayati Raj Institutions. It is simply a council of elected village representatives. The elected village representatives elect their leader in the first meeting of the gram panchayat immediately after the election. The West Bengal Panchayat act was approved in 1956. The union boards gave place to the two- tier structure at the lowest levels: Gram Panchayat and the Anchal Panchayat. The implementation of the act was however phrased. By 1963, just 50 % of the village and sixty percent rural population were enveloped by the Panchayat system. Political participation of women can be viewed as one of the proven strategies for the empowerment of women. Although women’s access to political power has multiplied staggeringly, obscurity square measure ladies capable men in their influence over and exercise of political authority. Women have the proper to participate in political processes that have an effect on them, their families, and their societies. Women’s political participation has been recognized internationally as an important measure of the status of women in any particular country. Hence, in recent years women participation in politics and decision- making has received important attention across the world. However, women remain seriously understand in decision making positions. The central objective of this study is to look at challenges and opportunities of women political participation. 11.
