VINEYARD Alongside Memorious downslope, Bloom’s Field spans the southwest-facing hillside that delineates the windward edge of our domaine. The Monterey Shale bedrock of Memorious is prevalent here, too, however the clay top soils of Bloom’s Field are lighter in color and texture, particularly as the climbs the slope. Here, our heritage selections of - Calera, Swan, and Mount Eden - are planted in alternating rows, providing an elucidating way to observe communication across a genetically diverse vineyard.

TASTING NOTE It could be easy to let the 2018 Bloom’s Field unfettered expression of pleasure and joy overshadow its profundity. But to consider it seamless marriage of fruit, flower, and mineral sensations is to realize a great Pinot Noir vineyard coming into its own. The ebullience of the ripe red fruit is almost overwhelming, as cranberry and cherry notes take you to the apex of sunny ripeness without becoming jammy. Rich floral tones lift the nose and merge with the leafy, peppery charge of whole cluster fermentation. The lushness doesn’t sprawl, though, as the ’s mineral aspect—suggested by aromas reminiscent of rock dust or dried river beds—keeps it firm, as does the structure applied by incisive acidity and ordered, well- drawn tannins. The compactness of the wine’s structure and flavor implies a beautiful evolution in the bottle, as the wine’s gifts continue to unfold.

VINEYARD La Côte blankets a steep southeast-facing hillside on the leeward slope of our domaine. Unimpeded by the inexorable winds that confront Bloom’s Field and Memorious to the west, la Côte enjoys more optimal pollination and less shatter. The vineyard possesses the most heterogeneous soils of our estate: its bedrock varies from Monterey Shale to Diatomaceous Earth to alluvium, and the associated soils range from shallow and rocky - with a plethora of broken stones - to rich and homogenous downslope

TASTING NOTE Like the experience of eating just-picked fruit underneath the tree or bush from which it was plucked, the 2018 La Côte offers a potent portrait of both plant and fruit. Rich, peppery, and herbal flavors cohere with tangy red currant, fresh cherry, and pithy cranberry into a pleasurable whole that suggests not just the wine or the grapes, but the entirety of the vineyard that birthed them. Bright acidity provides energy to fuse the myriad flavors together, leaving a flush of gentle tannins fluttering into the finish. A bit tense and edgy in its youth, the 2018 La Côte promises a long life ahead, as these elements soften and expand, opening up the wine into its future glory.

VINEYARD Perched above the Santa Ynez River, Memorious is immedi ately downslope from Bloom’s Field. The vineyard bends gently to the southwest, opening its face to the Pacific Ocean and its winds. It rests upon a bedrock of Monterey Shale covered by alluvial deposits; its soils are the heavi est of the domaine—deep brown in color, composed primarily of clay.

Memorious is host to - and consequently, named for - our one acre of Pinot Noir seedlings, planted in 2007. With these seedlings, which are in effect the “memories” of Pinot Noir, we have set out to identify and, over many years to come, cultivate our own genetic selection of one of the world’s greatest grape varieties.

TASTING NOTE Bright and full of life, Memorious boasts luxuriant flavors of ripe, crushed cherries accented with heady glimmers of orange zest, peppery leaves, healthy loam, and floral high tones. What the nose my lack in absolute precision is made up for in complexity and sheer enthusiasm, as Memorious is a wine that begs to be opened, and, once open, will likely not go unfinished. Early drinkers will be rewarded by a round, dense Pinot, thick with chewy tannins and leavened by a salty and smoothly, integrated acidity. For its earnest evocation of ripe, mouthwatering Pinot Noir, Memorious drinks with effortless ease.

VINEYARD One of the defining elements of the western edge of the Santa Rita Hills is the geology and topography of the land. In fact, this is exactly what drew us to this small corner of the appellation, where giant formations of ancient diatomaceous shale beds rise to a thousand feet over the Santa Ynez River. Here, we knew the would take years to become established, working relentlessly to drive their roots into the bedrock searching for small deposits of water and nutrients. These sedimentary soils, that over 20 million years have slowly decomposed and fractured, today offer exceptional for the cultivation of Pinot Noir. This geological wonder, combined with the marine chilled climate, is what makes Domaine de la Côte so incredibly unique and special.

After years of feeding these meager topsoils with compost and cover crops, we have finally started to see our vines become strong enough to produce enough crop to allow us to bottle an Estate Pinot Noir. The 2018 “DDLC” Pinot Noir is the only wine we produce that incorporates all our single parcels into a single cuvee. It will only be available to our mailing list members.

TASTING NOTE The 2018 “DDLC” Pinot Noir has the savory peppery notes from Memorious, the salinity and brightness of Bloom’s Field, and the broad, silky sweet tannins from La Côte. This wine will age beautifully, but will be the best wine to drink early of all the cuvees from the remarkable 2018 vintage.
