בָּרּוְך אַתָּ ה יי, ,Ba-ruch a-tah A-do-nai אֱֹלהֵינּומֶ לְֶך הָּעֹולָּם, ,E-lo-hei-nu me-lech ha-o-lam אֲשֶר קִדְּשָּ נּו בְּמִצְּ ֹותָּ יו, ,a-sher kid-sha-nu b'mitz-vo-tav v'tzi-va-nu l'had-lik neir shel Sha-bat. וְּצִ ּוָּנּולְּהַדְּ לִיק נֵר לשֶ שַבָּת.

Blessed are You, Lord our God, Ruler of the Universe, who has sanctified us with commandments, and commanded us to light Shabbat candles.

WHERE HAS THIS WEEK VANISHED? Where has this week vanished? Is it lost forever? Will I ever recover anything from it? The joy of life, the unexpected victory, the realized hope, the task accomplished? Will I ever be able to banish the memory of pain, the sting of defeat, the heaviness of boredom? On this day let me keep for a while what must drift away. On this day let me be free of the burdens that must return. On this day, Shabbat, abide.

And now Shabbat has come, Can it help me to withdraw for a while from the flight of time?

Can it contain the retreat of the hours and days from the grasp of a frantic life? When all days abandon me, Shabbat, abide.

Let me learn to pause, if only for this day. Let me find peace on this day. Let me enter into a quiet world this day. On this day, Shabbat, abide.

Kabbalat Shabbat, “Welcoming Shabbat,” is one of the ritual innovations of the circle of Kabbalists קבלת שבת (Jewish mystics) who gathered around Rabbi Isaac Luria in sixteenth-century Safed in the Land of Israel.

LIVING IS AN ART

An artist cannot be continually wielding his brush. He must stop at times in his painting to freshen his vision of the object, the meaning of which he wishes to express on his canvas.

Living is also an art. We dare not become absorbed in its technical processes and lose our consciousness of its general plan…

The Sabbath represents those moments when we pause in our brushwork to renew our vision of this object. Having done so we take ourselves to our painting with clarified vision and renewed energy. This applies to the individual and to the community alike.

God, help us now to make this new Shabbat.

After noise, we see quiet. After crowds of indifferent strangers, we seek to touch those we love.

After concentration on work and responsibility, we seek freedom to meditate, to listen to our inward selves.

We open our eyes to the hidden beauties and the infinite possibilities in the world You are creating.

We break open the gates of the reservoirs of goodness and kindness in ourselves and in others.

We reach toward one holy perfect moment of Shabbat.

A NEW LIGHT

On this Shabbat eve we see the world in a new light. We add new spirit to our lives. We taste a new time for peace. We rest from desire for gain and ambition for things. We raise our eyes to look beyond time and space toward eternity. May we come to always see the world in a new light. As it is written: “Let a new light shine upon Zion, and may it be our blessing to see its splendor.”

WE UNLOCK OUR SOULS

How good it is to come together in this house of God on Shabbat eve.

Here we come to think and to reflect, to meditate and to ponder.

Here we look back on what has been, look ahead to what lies before us, and reflect upon the meaning of our lives,

For what do we live? How should we live? What do the people in our lives mean to us, and what do we mean to them?

What do we mean to You, O God? And how much, O Lord, do You mean to us?

Here we open our hearts and unlock our souls to You.

May our Shabbat worship help bring peace to our hearts and strengthen us for the days and weeks that are to be.

Amen.

Reveal Yourself and spread over me, beloved One, the shelter of Your peace. Let the Earth sparkle with your glory. We will rejoice and be happy with You. Be quick, beloved, for the time has come, and favor us as in days of old.

Like L’chah Dodi, Yedid Nefesh is a love poem to God. The poet addresses God in remarkably intimate terms as a lover and as a parent. The poem forms an acrostic, in which the first letter of each Hebrew verse spells .the inexpressible Name of God יהוה

לְּכּו נְּרַ ּנְּנָּה לַיהֹוָּה, ,L’chu n’ra-n’nah l’A-do-nai נָּרִ יעָּה לְּצּור יִשְּ עֵנּו .na-ri-ah l’tzur yish-ei-nu נְּקַדְּ מָּ ה פָּנָּיו בְּתֹודָּ ה, ,n’ka-d’mah fa-nav b’to-dah b’zmi-rot na-ri-a lo. בִ זְּמִ רֹות נָּרִ יעַ לֹו: Let us sing to God; Let us shout for joy to the rock of our salvation. Let us come in thanksgiving before God’s Presence; Let us shout joyous hymns to God.

Because God is great, Above all that is praised; The world God created rests in God’s hands; The lowlands and the mountaintops belong to God.

אֲשֶ ר-לֹו הַיָּם וְּהּוא עָּׂשָּ הּו, ,A-sher lo ha-yam v’hu a-sa-hu וְּ יַבֶשֶ ת יָּדָּ יו יָּצָּרּו. .v’ya-be-shet ya-dav ya-tza-ru בֹאּו נִשְּ תַ חֲוֶה וְּנִכְּרָּ עָּה, ,Bo-u nish-ta-cha-veh v’nich-ra-a נִבְּרְּ כָּה לִפְּ נֵי-יי עֹׂשֵ נּו. .niv-r’chah lif-nei A-do-nai o-sei-nu

The sea is Yours, God; You created it. With Your hands You created dry land. Come, let us bow and bend our knee; Let us kneel before God our Maker.

Psalms 95-99, 29 – This cycle of six psalms, representing the six days of creation enjoins all creation to sing out the praises of God. God’s creative power is revealed in the world around us; God’s sovereignty is over all nature and all nations.

Sing to the Eternal! Sing a new song! Sing to God, all across the land! Sing to the Eternal! Bless God’s Name! Sing every day of God’s salvation!

Proclaim God’s honor to the nations, the Almighty’s miracles to all peoples, because God’s greatness is to be lauded. Exalted is the Eternal over all the deities.

כִ י כָּל-אֱֹלהֵי הָּעַמִ ים אֱלִילִים, ,Ki kol E-lo-hei ha-a-mim e-li-lim וַיהֹוָּה שָּמַיִם עָּׂשָּ ה. .V’A-do-nai sha-ma-yim a-sah הֹוד-וְּהָּדָּ ר לְּפָּנָּיו, ,Hod v’ha-dar l’fa-nav Oz v’ti-fe-ret b’mik-da-sho. עֹז וְּתִפְּאֶרֶ ת בְּמִ קְּדָּ שֹו.

As all the other gods are false, While the Almighty made the heavens – Toward You the glory and splendor shine, Your temple is magnificent and majestic.

הָּבּו לַיהֹוָּה מִשְּ פְּ חֹות עַמִ ים, ,Ha-vu l’A-do-nai mish-p’chot a-mim הָּבּו לַיהֹוָּה כָּבֹוד וָּעֹז. .Ha-vu l’A-do-nai ka-vod va-oz הָּבּו לַיהֹוָּה כְּ בֹוד שְּ מֹו, ,Ha-vu l’A-do-nai k’vod sh’mo S’u min-chah u-vo-u l’chatz-ro-tav. ׂשְּ אּו מִ נְּחָּה ּובֹאּו לְּחַצְּ רֹותָּ יו.

Let the families and peoples come to God! Shower God with honor and strength! Bring honor to God’s Name! Come to God’s shrine with gifts.

הִשְּ תַ חֲוּו לַיהֹוָּה בְּ הַדְּרַ ת-קֹדֶ ש, ,Hish-ta-cha-vu l’A-do-nai b’had-rat ko-desh חִ ילּו מִ פָּנָּיו כָּל-הָּאָּרֶ ץ. .Chi-lu mi-pa-nav kol ha-a-retz אִמְּ רּו בַגֹויִם יְּהוָּה מָּלְָּך, ,Im-ru va-go-yim A-do-nai ma-lach אַ ף-תִ כֹון תֵבֵל בַל-תִ מֹוט, ,Af ti-kon tei-veil bal ti-mot ya-din a-mim b’mei-sha-rim. יָּדִ ין עַמִ ים בְּמֵ ישָּרִ ים. Bow before God in holy praise, All the earth is awed before You. Tell the nations that the Almighty is Sovereign and holds the earth steady without faltering. All peoples are esteemed in equity.

יִׂשְּמְּ חּו הַשָּמַיִם וְּתָּ גֵל הָּאָּרֶ ץ, ,Yis-m’chu ha-sha-ma-yim v’ta-geil ha-a-retz יִרְּ עַם הַיָּם ּומְּ ֹלאֹו. .Yir-am ha-yam u-m’lo-o יַעֲֹלז ׂשָּדַ י וְּכָּל-אֲשֶ ר-בֹו, ,Ya-a-loz sa-dai v’chol a-sher bo Az y’ra-n’nu kol a-tzei ya-ar. אָּ ז יְּרַ ּנְּנּו כָּל-עֲצֵי-יָּעַר.

The sky will rejoice and the earth will celebrate, The sea and all it holds will roar with thunder. The meadows and all they produce will rejoice, Then all the trees in the forest will sing in joy.

לִפְּ נֵי יי כִ י בָּא, ,Lif-nei A-do-nai ki va כִ י בָּא לִשְּ פֹט הָּאָּרֶ ץ Ki va lish-pot ha-a-retz יִשְּ פֹט-תֵבֵל בְּ צֶדֶ ק ,Yish-pot tei-veil b’tze-dek v’a-mim be-e-mu-na-to. וְּעַמִ ים בֶאֱמּונָּתֹו.

Because when they come before God, As God comes to judge the earth, The Almighty will judge the world rightly and the peoples with loyal faithfulness.

God is Sovereign and the Earth celebrates; The continents will rejoice. Clouds and mists shroud the Divine, To be uncovered by righteousness and justice.

אֵ ש לְּפָּנָּיו תֵ לְֵך, ּותְּ לַהֵט סָּבִ יב צָּרָּ יו. .Eish l’fa-nav tei-leich, ut-la-heit sa-viv tza-rav הֵאִ ירּו בְּרָּ קָּיו תֵבֵל, ,Hei-i-ru v’ra-kav tei-veil רָּ אֲתָּ ה וַתָּחֵל הָּאָּרֶ ץ. .ra-a-tah va-ta-cheil ha-a-retz

Fire precedes You and burns those who oppose You. Your lightening is a beacon to the world, and the Earth shakes at the sight.

הָּרִ ים כַדֹונַג נָּמַ סּו מִ לִפְּ נֵי יי, ,Ha-rim ka-do-nag na-ma-su mi-lif-nei A-do-nai מִ לִפְּ נֵי אֲדֹון כָּל-הָּאָּרֶ ץ. .mi-lif-nei A-don kol ha-a-retz הִ גִידּו הַשָּמַיִם צִדְּ קֹו, ,Hi-gi-du ha-sha-ma-yim tzid-ko v’ra-u chol ha-a-mim k’vo-do. וְּרָּ אּו כָּל-הָּעַמִ ים כְּ בֹודֹו.

The mountains melt like wax before God, Before the ruler of all lands. The heavens tell of God’s virtue and all the nations see God’s glory.

יֵבֹשּו כָּל-עֹבְּדֵ י פֶסֶל, ,Yei-vo-shu kol ov-dei fe-sel הַמִתְּ הַלְּלִים בָּאֱלִילִים, ,ha-mit-ha-l’lim ba-e-li-lim הִשְּ תַ חֲוּו-לֹו כָּל-אֱֹלהִ ים. .hish-ta-cha-vu lo kol e-lo-him

All who serve graven images will desiccate; Those who praise false gods, for they too must bow before the Eternal God.

It strips the forests bare. Within God’s palace all declare: “Glory!”

But beware, lest your hearts go astray, and you go off and serve other gods, and submit to them. Then the anger of the Eternal will burn against you, and the skies will close up, and the rain will not fall, and the ground will not produce, and you will be forced to leave quickly from the good land that the Eternal is giving you.

Therefore, place these words upon your heart and upon your soul, and bind them for signs upon your hands, and let them be for frontlets between your eyes. Teach them to your children, speaking of them when you are sitting in your house, when you go on your way, when you lie down, and when you rise up, Inscribe them on the doorposts of your house and upon your gates. This is how your days and the days of your children will be many on the land that the Eternal promised to give to your ancestors, so long as heaven remains above the earth.

Adonai, your God, is true. True and faithful is all this, and it is firmly established for us that You alone are our God and there is none like You, and we are Israel Your nation. God redeems us from the power of kings, our Sovereign who delivers us from the hand of all the cruel tyrants. You are the God who exacts vengeance for us from our foes and who brings just retribution upon all enemies of our soul; who performs great deeds that are beyond comprehension, and wonders beyond number. Who upon the heights of our enemies and raised our pride above all who hate us; Who wrought for us miracles and vengeance upon Pharoah; signs and wonders on the land of the offspring of Ham; God struck with anger all the firstborn of Egypt and removed the nation Israel from their midst to eternal freedom; Who brought the children of God through the split parts of the Sea of Reeds while those who pursued them and hated them, God caused to sink into the depths. When God’s children perceived Adonai’s power, they lauded and gave grateful praise to Adonai’s Name. And God’s sovereignty they accepted upon themselves willingly. Moses and the Children of Israel raised their voices to You in song with abundant gladness – and said unanimously:

A SINGLE HUMAN LIFE

The worth of a single human life cannot be quantified. It is written in the Talmud: “Whoever saves one life, it is as if that person saved the entire world” (Mishnah Sanhedrin 4:5). Because of the supreme worth of human life, when an individual dies, and incalculable diminishing of strength takes place within God’s universe. Therefore, we pray: yitgadal v’yitkadash shemeih rabah, “may the power of God’s name be magnified,” in effect making a plea to mitigate the loss to God’s universe, although we acknowledge: le’eila min kol birchata v’shirata, “it is beyond all praises and songs,” that is, nothing can ever truly make up for the loss of a life.

WHEN DEATH COMES

When death comes to the person you love You will go down to darkness and despair And in the depths of the loneliness will find Your naked soul, craven and cold.

You whose mind has considered and doubted, Whose heart has faltered, and whose courage has failed, Will wring out the final personal word From your stricken soul.

And death has no victory but this: I believe. Death has no victory but this: To rise from doubt and cold darkness To magnify and hallow the Name of God.

LIFE AFTER DEATH

These things I know: how the living go on living and how the dead go on living with them

so that in a forest even a dead tree casts a shadow and the leaves fall one by one

and the branches break in the wind and the bark peels off slowly and the trunk cracks and the rain seeps in through the cracks and the trunk falls to the ground and the moss covers it and in the spring the rabbits find it

and build their nest inside the dead tree so that nothing is wasted in nature or in love.

IS IT FOR THE DEAD WE PRAY?

Is it for the dead we pray? Will they rest easier for our thoughts and words? Can we call them back across that fearsome gulf? Do the dead wait to hear our prayers?

Let us not hide from it: We pray for ourselves. We cry in the darkness for our own wrenching loss and for the fear we dare not face.

One more year of our days in the light is gone. Can we help but think of those whose days have ended? Can we do better than to recall their memory, and to think of how we will be remembered, to smile at the warmth and love they gave and to consider our own giving, to ask for peace upon them and to seek it for ourselves.

WHEN I DIE

When I die give what’s left of me away to children and old men that wait to die. And if you need to cry, cry for your brother walking the street beside you. And when you need me, put your arms around anyone and give them what you need to give me.

I want to leave you something, something better than words or sounds. Look for me in the people I’ve known or loved, and if you cannot give me away, at least let me live in your eyes and not in your mind.

You can love me best by letting hands touch hands, and by letting go of children that need to be free. Love doesn’t die, people do. So, when all that’s left of me is love, give me away.

LIGHT

The light of life is a finite flame. Like the Shabbat candles, life is kindled, it burns, it glows, it is radiant with warmth and beauty. But soon it fades, its substance is consumed, and it is no more.

In light we see; in light we are seen. The flames dance and our life burns down and gutters. There is an end to the flames. We see no more and are no more seen, yet we do not despair, for we are more than a memory slowly fading into the darkness. With our lives we give life. Something of us can never die: we move in the eternal cycle of darkness and death, of light and life.

FEAR AND LOVE

It is a fearful thing to love what death can touch.

A fearful thing to love, hope, dream: to be— to be, and oh! to lose.

A thing for fools this, and a holy thing, a holy thing to love.

For your life has lived in me, your laugh once lifted me, your word was gift to me.

To remember this brings a painful joy. ‘Tis a human thing, love, a holy thing, to love what death has touched.

ONE

It is hard to sing of oneness when the world is not complete, when those who once brought wholeness to our lives have gone, and naught but memory can fill the emptiness their passing leaves behind.

But memory can tell us only what we were, in company with those we loved; it cannot help us find what each of us, alone, must now become. Yet no one is really alone: those who live no more, echo still within our thoughts and words, and what they did is part of what we have become.

We do best homage to our dead when we live our lives more fully, even in the shadow of our loss. For each of our lives is worth the life of the whole world; in each one is the breath of the Ultimate One. In affirming the One, we affirm the worth of each one whose life, now ended, brought us closer to the Source of life, in whose unity no one is alone and every life finds purpose.

LAW OF GOD

When cherished ties are broken, and the chain of love is shattered, only trust and the strength of faith can lighten the heaviness of the heart. At times, the pain of separation seems more than we can bear, but if we dwell too long on our loss, we embitter our hearts and harm ourselves and those about us.

The Psalmist said that in his affliction, he learned the law of God. And in truth, grief is a great teacher, when it sends us back to serve and bless the living. We learn how to counsel and comfort those who, like ourselves, are bowed with sorrow. We learn when to keep silent in their presence, and when a word will assure them of our love and concern.

Thus, even when they are gone, the departed are with us, moving us to live as, in their higher moments, they themselves wished to live. We remember them now; they live in our hearts; they are an abiding blessing.

Our thoughts turn to those who have died: our own loved ones, those whom our friends, neighbors, and community have lost, the martyrs of our people whose graves are unmarked and those of every race and nation whose lives have been a blessing to humanity. As we remember them, let us meditate on the meaning of love and loss, of life and death.

At this time, if there is someone whose name you would like to say aloud, you may do so as my eyes meet yours.

For all of those said, those who remain in our hearts, and those who have no one to remember them, we join together in the Mourner’s Kaddish.

The Kaddish is one of the best-known prayers in the entire liturgy. Although the Kaddish is recited in mourning, it makes no reference to death at all. Instead, the Kaddish praises and glorifies God, ending with a plea for peace.

Let us imagine a world without sound, a world where deathly silence covers the earth like a shroud Praise to You, O Lord, for words that speak to our minds, for songs that lift our spirits, and for all those souls who know how to listen.

Let us imagine a world without order, where no one can predict the length of the day or the flow of the tide. Imagine a universe where planets leave their orbits and soar like meteors through the heavens and where the law of gravity is repealed at random Praise to You, O lord, for the marvelous order of nature, from stars in the sky to particles in the atom.

PEACE MEANS MORE THAN QUIET

Help us, O God, to lie down in peace; But teach us that peace means more than quiet. Remind us that if we are to be at peace at night, We must take heed how we live by day.

Grant us the peace that comes from honest dealing, So that no fear of discovery will haunt our sleep. Rid us of resentments and hatreds Which rob us of the peace we crave.

Liberate us from enslaving habits Which disturb us and give us no rest. May we inflict no pain, bring no shame, And seek no profit by another’s loss.

May we so live that we can face The whole world with serenity. May we feel no remorse at night For what we have done during the day.

IN SPITE OF EVERYTHING

It’s really a wonder that I haven’t dropped all my ideals, because they seem so absurd and impossible to carry out. Yet I keep them, because in spite of everything I still believe that people are really good at heart. I simply can’t build my hopes on a foundation of confusion, misery, and death. I see the world gradually being turned into a wilderness. I hear the approaching thunder, I can feel the suffering of millions, and yet, if I look up into the heavens, I think that it will all come out right one of these days; that this cruelty will end, and that peace and tranquility will return again. In the meantime, I must hold on to my ideals for perhaps the day will come when I shall be able to carry them out.

WE REMEMBER THE HOLOCAUST

We mourn for six million of our people, brutally destroyed by “civilized men” behaving like savages. The cruelties of Pharaoh, Haman, Nebuchadnezzar, and Titus cannot be compared with diabolical schemes of the modern tyrants in their design to exterminate an entire people.

The blood of the innocent who perished in the gas chambers of Auschwitz, Bergen-Belsen, Buchenwald, Dachau, Treblinka, and Theresienstadt, cries out to God and man.

We will never forget the burning of synagogues and houses of study, the destruction of holy books and scrolls of Torah, the sadistic torment and murder of scholars, sages, and teachers.

They tortured the flesh of our brothers and sisters; but they could not crush their spirit, their faith, their love.

We recall our brothers and sisters in the Warsaw Ghetto, Jews who valiantly defied the monstrous adversaries.

And we recall the heroism of those who, in the face of unprecedented and overwhelming force, maintained Jewish culture and asserted Jewish values in the very midst of enslavement and destruction.

Let us pray: O Lord, remember Your martyred children. Remember all who have given their lives for the sanctification of Your name.

Even as we mourn, we recall those compassionate men and women of other faiths and nationalities who, at the peril of their lives, saved some of our people. Truly, “The righteous of all nations have a share in the world to come.”

Let us pray and work for the day when there shall be no violence or desolation on earth, when “nation shall not lift up sword against nation, nor shall they learn war any more.”

EACH OF US

Each of us enters this sanctuary with a different need.

Some hearts are full of gratitude: They are overflowing with the happiness of love and the joy of life; They are eager to confront the day, to make the world more fair; They are recovering from illness or have escaped misfortune.

And we rejoice with them.

Some hearts ache with sorrow: Disappointments weigh heavily on them and they have tasted despair; Families have been broken; loved ones lie on a bed of pain; Death has taken those whom they cherished.

May our presence and sympathy bring them comfort.

Some hearts are embittered: They have sought answers in vain; ideals once cherished now are mocked.

May the knowledge that we, also, are searching restore their hope and give them courage to believe that all is not emptiness.

Some spirits hunger: They long for friendship; they crave understanding; they yearn for warmth.

May we, in our common need and striving, gain strength from one another, as we share our joys, lighten each other’s burdens, and pray for the well-being of our community.

For years I read your map of this place As a topography of voices that needed No home but the ark of my heart. And yet now I move in this landscape of echoes, Every hill a place where story grows deep in the soil. Blessed are You of living history, of Torah that goes on— Blessed is this land of ancestral dream and holy desire. In the shadows of the desert I still hear Sarah laughing.

ETERNAL GOD, HEAR OUR PRAYERS

Eternal God, hear our prayers. Hearken to our hopes and aspirations.

A single day in your presence is better than a thousand elsewhere.

I would rather stand at the threshold of the house of God, than dwell in the tents of evil.

The Eternal God is a sun and a shield. God bestows both grace and glory. O Eternal God, how blessed are those who trust in You.

The Eternal One is hidden from the eyes of all mortal beings and beyond the comprehension of our finite minds. Even the most perceptive eye fails to penetrate beyond the smallest portion of God’s universe. The voices of poets and sages falter as they seek to express God’s incomparable wisdom and splendor.

Yet, O God, though your greatness surpasses our understanding, still we feel Your nearness. We are filled with wonder and awe as we behold the signs of Your majesty. Your laws guide our lives as they direct the planets on high.

Infinite One, we know that we shall find You if we seek You with our sincere hearts. As the flowers of the field drink the dew of heaven and the radiance of the sun, so would we, lifting our spirits to You, drink from the pure fountains of Your holiness. JUSTICE

The world is sustained by three things; by justice, by truth, and by peace.

Justice, justice shall you pursue, that you may live.

Plant for yourselves righteousness; reap the fruit of steadfast love.

Proclaim liberty throughout the land to all who dwell therein.

Hate evil and love good. Establish justice wherever you may dwell.

Oh God, We thank You for the sense of justice that You have nurtured within us. This impulse always seeks to express itself in the daily relations of our lives. Be with us as we strive to do Your will.

Teach us to see that all people are our brothers and sisters. Fill with respect and compassion for all, that we may never wrong them, exploit them, or take advantage of anyone’s weakness or ignorance. Kindle in us a passion for righteousness. Grant us the vision to see that only justice can endure; that only in being just to one another can we make our lives acceptable to You. May we, by our thoughts and deeds, hasten the time when wrong and violence shall cease, when justice will be established throughout the earth.

DREAMS

We have always been dreamers, a people made by dreaming, the half lit world beneath the surface of our days filled with the shadows of tomorrow. From deep within these boundless rooms rise prophecy and poetry, meaning and madness, the midnight flowering of a world worn into our bones by a lifetime of noons.

But when we rise into waking again and again, each morning a rare and perfect blessing, the verdant world of deepest night pales into muddled fragments, senseless and disorienting. It is only in waking that we find our way into understanding or into sense.

God, these dreams are born from glittering fragments of Your shattered holy world. Help me to know my dreams for what they are: the familiar world distorted by false meaning, the strange and unsettling, a holy door to the world to come.

A PRAYER FOR OUR JEWISH COMMUNITY

Our lot has fallen in pleasant places. The American experience is, for the Jewish people, unique in our history. We thank God for the privilege of sharing the countless blessings of our land and for the opportunities to contribute to its well-being.

We are also aware that an unbreakable bond unites the household of Israel throughout the world. We share with Jews everywhere a common destiny. We have been taught that all the people of Israel are responsible for one another. May God be with our brothers and sisters whose lives are made hard because they are Jews. May God grant them strength to endure and lead them soon from subjugation to freedom, from darkness to light.

We remember, O God; we will not, we cannot, forget. The pain of our fellow Jews everywhere is our pain. Auschwitz is our experience. Israel reborn is our joy. We were with our brothers and sisters in darkness; we are with them in the emerging light.

May Your favor rest on the land of Israel, its diverse peoples and faith communities. Protect Israel against hatred and war. Grant that the promise of its origins soon may be fulfilled in peace and harmony. May the bonds that unite the Jewish people everywhere be a source of strength to us all.

Secure in our freedom and conscious of our responsibilities, may we go forward with vision and dedication. May we grow in wisdom and compassion for all people with whom we share this blessed land. Amen.

ETHICS OF THE SAGES

Who is wise? The one who learns from every person, as it is said: From all my teachers I gained wisdom.

Who is strong? The one who controls his or her impulses, as it is said: Whoever is slow to anger is better than a strong person; whoever rules his or her own spirit is better than one who conquers a city.

Who is rich? The one who is content with his or her lot, as it is said: When you eat of the toil of your own hands, you shall be happy, and it shall be well with you.

Who is honored? The one who honors others, as it is said: Those who honor me, I will honor.

GUARD MY TONGUE

O God, guard my tongue from evil and my lips from speaking lies, and to those who slander me, yet give me no heed. May my soul be humble and forgiving to all. Open my heart, O God, to Your Torah, so that I may know all Your mitzvot and pursue all Your truths. As to those who harbor ill will toward me, let their opinions have no effect on me, and quickly frustrate their designs against me. Do this for the sake of Your Name; do this for the sake of Your power; do this for the sake of Your holiness; do this for the sake of Your Torah. Answer us, O God, so that Your loved ones can be delivered, and save us with your redeeming power.

Barchu (the call to worship) bends ברכו The prayer leader at the word .Adonai stands straight יי the knees and bows from the waist, and at Baruch Adonai is the communal response, whereupon the ברוך יי community repeats the choreography of the first line.

Adonai Tz’vaot: this is one of many names that help elucidate יי צבאות God’s attributes. God designs, creates, and arranges the universe with order and purpose.

While saying this important prayer, we are not to be distracted by anything around us. Closing our eyes enhances our concentration. (Code of Jewish Law, Orach Chaim 61:5) For a few moments every morning, we close our eyes and live this reality, but behind all the packaging, it’s all essentially Godliness. We then open our eyes and see a very different-looking place in front of us. But we can make it past this. For we have been reminded. And this reality remains with us until evening, when it will be time for our next charge, the nighttime Shema. – Chabad.org

The translation in this case is, “Listen, Israel (one of Jacob’s two names) — Adonai is our God (too), and we believe in the one God,” signifying that they accept monotheism…. A relieved Jacob responds, in the small voice of a 147-year-old on his deathbed, “Blessed is Adonai’s glorious majesty forever and ever.” According to the rabbis, this is the reason we say the first line of the Shema loudly (with the strength of 12 sons) and the second line softly (in the manner of the dying, but satisfied Jacob). -- Cantor Michal Gray-Schaffer on Devarim Rabbah 2:35

The Sages asked, “Should we recite [the second line] [as a part of the Shema prayer]? Moses did not record this [in the Bible]. Should we not say it [if] Jacob said it?” They therefore established that the [second] line should be recited quietly. – adapted from Pesachim 56a

This prayer book (siddur) was created with the goal of providing options for individuals from a variety of Jewish backgrounds during Kabbalat Shabbat and Ma'ariv services for Friday night. This siddur, designed for an egalitarian community, provides both contemporary and traditional text choices for a more personalized prayer service. The texts have been selected from a myriad of sources, reflecting the depth and breadth of our traditions.

Throughout our history, the prayer book has changed to reflect the language, knowledge, and cultural norms of the Jewish people. So too, our prayer books for Hillel at Miami University have changed, and we hope that this one resonates with our community for generations.
