Space, Place, and Protest: Austin’s Progressive Country Music Scene and the Negotiation of Texan Identities, 1968-1978 Travis David Stimeling A dissertation submitted to the faculty of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in partial fulfillment of the requirements of the Doctor of Philosophy in the Department of Music. Chapel Hill 2007 Approved by: Jocelyn R. Neal, Chair Jon W. Finson David García Mark Katz Philip Vandermeer © 2007 Travis David Stimeling ALL RIGHTS RESERVED ii ABSTRACT TRAVIS DAVID STIMELING: “Space, Place, and Protest: Austin’s Progressive Country Music Scene and the Negotiation of Texan Identities, 1968-1978” (Under the direction of Jocelyn R. Neal) The progressive country music movement developed in Austin, Texas, during the early 1970s as a community of liberal young musicians and concertgoers with strong interests in Texan country music traditions and contemporary rock music converged on the city. Children of the Cold War and the post-World War II migration to the suburbs, these “cosmic cowboys” sought to get back in touch with their rural roots and to leave behind the socially conservative world their parents had created for them. As a hybrid of country music and rock, progressive country music both encapsulated the contradictions of the cosmic cowboys in song and helped to create a musical sanctuary in which these youths could articulate their difference from mainstream Texan culture. Examining the work of the movement’s singer-songwriters (Michael Murphey, Guy Clark, Gary P. Nunn), western swing revivalists (Asleep at the Wheel, Alvin Crow and the Pleasant Valley Boys), and commercial country singers (Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings), this dissertation explores the proliferation of stock imagery, landscape painting, and Texan stereotypes in progressive country music and their role in the construction of Austin’s difference.

Time Theories and Music Conference Ionian University/ Corfu, 27-29 April 2012 Proceedings ed. by Panos Vlagopoulos Ionian University - Department of Music Studies Corfu, 2013 2012 Corfu Time and Music Conference Proceedings Anthony J. Kosar* The Time of Contemporary Country Music Narrative has always been an important feature of country western music in the United States. In their book You Wrote My Life: Lyrical Themes in Country Music, Richard Peterson and Melton McClaurin state: “Among the recurrent elements of country songs is a strong sense of the narrative. For this reason, country music has often been called a story teller’s medium, and most of those familiar with the music, fans and scholars alike, would agree that country songs generally tell stories.”1 In the words of country music legend Hank Williams, “a song ain’t nothin’ in the world but a story just wrote with music to it.”2 My interest is the narrative time in these musical stories. Not all country songs employ narrative, but those that do are usually written in a verse/chorus form. [See Example 1.] This form, also found in numerous popular songs, alternates a verse—a section with fixed melody and harmony but with changing text—and a chorus—a section with fixed melody and harmony but with static or nearly static text. The verses tell the story and the chorus reflects on the plot. In the words of singer/songwriter Holly Tashian, “If you’re writing a song, you’re telling a story that funnels down and it makes its point—bam!—and there’s your chorus.”3 The narrative time is advanced in the verses; the reflection on the action is found in the chorus which usually lies outside of the narrative time.

INFORMATION TO USERS This reproduction was made from a copy of a manuscript sent to us for publication and microfilming. While the most advanced technology has been used to pho tograph and reproduce this manuscript, the quality of the reproduction is heavily dependent upon the quality of the material submitted. Pages in any manuscript may have indistinct print. In all cases the best available copy has been filmed. The following explanation of techniques is provided to help clarify notations which may appear on this reproduction. 1. Manuscripts may not always be complete. When it is not possible to obtain missing pages, a note appears to indicate this. 2. When copyrighted materials are removed from the manuscript, a note ap pears to indicate this. 3. Oversize materials (maps, drawings, and charts) are photographed by sec tioning the original, begirming at the upper left hand comer and continu ing from left to right in equal sections with small overlaps. Each oversize page is also filmed as one exposure and is available, for an additional charge, as a standard 35mm slide or in black and white paper format.* 4. Most photographs reproduce acceptably on positive microfilm or micro fiche but lack clarity on xerographic copies made from the microfilm. For an additional charge, all photographs are available in black and white standard 35mm slide format.* *For more information about black and white slides or enlarged paper reproductions, please contact the Dissertations Customer Services Department. / / Nr. 136 / Oktober 2009 7. November 2009, 25th Int. International Country Night Bern nimmt langsam Formen an.
