The Miller family, owners of the NBA’s Utah Jazz and Triple A baseball franchise, declared that they understood the frustration and despair in communities of color. A postponed game was hardly equal to a senseless killing of a black man opening the door to a car containing his three children. But for the Salt Lake Real soccer team owner, Dell Loy Hansen, the postponing of the game by his players was all about him and his profits. He felt disrespected, he said, and threatened to withhold fund to improve his team and cut the pay for mostly low-paid staff. He has since apologized for his comments, but many Utah sports fans support him. To them, professional athletes should just keep dribbling much like Robert E. Less thought his slaves should just keep picking cotton. Some 5,000 soccer fans were highly inconvenienced by driving to the Rio Tinto stadium only to find out the game would be temporarily postponed. Oh, the inconvenience of driving to the stadium only to discover that instead of eating concession stand tacos you would have to back- track and feast on ribs at an Applebees! Compare that to Jacob Blake who, shot seven times while entering his car, will be paralyzed for life. Or compare the soccer fans’ inconvenience to the two Wisconsin protestors who were killed by a 17-year old white racist. Those Utahns who think the protesting players are out of line have never had to warn their sons that a routine traffic stop could frustrate an anxiety-filled, trigger-happy patrolman. Several beloved musical groups performed at August’s art walk, including; Bill and Lorretta Westbrook, Mountain Top Sound, MB3 Jazz Band and The Washburn A tugust Ar Family Band. It was great to see old friends singing along with each other and cheering one another on. An impromptu jam session between Steven Swift of Mountain Top Sound and Paul Washburn Walk entertained the growing crowd. In addition to these talented musicians, many fantastic artists presented displays of beautiful artwork. Hanna Dawson brought her cyanotypes, Larry Laskowski displayed his watercolors, Amalia Wells and her Tole paintings, Michaela Crismon’s beautiful paintings, including many other wonderful community artists. Be sure to attend the Cedar City Arts Council’s last art walk of the season in September.
