The mv Balmoral Fund Ltd. has been given by Mr John Bird a superb collection of sailings handbills from the 1960s, the era when the motor-vessel St. Trillo (originally built in 1936 for the Liverpool & North Wales Steamship Company) was taken over by Messrs. P. & A. Campbell Ltd., of Bristol.

Between 1963 and 1969, St. Trillo sailed along the north Wales coast, and around Anglesey, as a White Funnel Fleet ship and ran from Liverpool and Llandudno and Menai Bridge – just as our own mv Balmoral revived again in 2015, after she was saved : the old White Funnel Fleet was once just as celebrated in north Wales as well as south Wales and the west of England.

Our own Balmoral continued to visit north Wales in the seventies, and kept alive the White Funnel Fleet tradition after the older St. Trillo had passed into history, and the sailings that Balmoral carried out in the intervening decades followed in most seasons right until 2007, often in partnership with the paddle-steamer Waverley in the 1990s and 2000s, until Llandudno Pier was damaged and brought sailings from this supreme Welsh resort – with the longest pier in Wales – to an end. But Balmoral has been brought back to the north-west, and to north Wales, where she is much appreciated.

These old handbills give a wonderful picture of the White Funnel Fleet north Wales coast sailings back in the sixties, the era of the Beatles. They are eminently suitable for being framed, come in lots of varying sizes and odd sizes, and whilst many are in the established White Funnel Fleet format of blue type on cream-coloured paper, some are printed on a wide range of bold and pastel colours. All are in good or excellent condition, and describe sailing times and fares. Most are covering the sailings as from either Llandudno Pier, or as from Menai Bridge Pier, with some bills listing more occasional sailings (principally around Anglesey) as from Caernarvon Pier (as it was then spelt), and a few are for Liverpool.

NB For serious transport collectors each of the Lots of handbills (Lot’s 29, 33, 34, 35, 36, 37, 38, 39 & 40 are believed to be complete, for each of the seasons 1963-1969 Inc.
