Dunbar rapidly makes companions with the tribe, and finds a white lady who was raised by the Indians. He steadily wins the admiration of these local individuals, and sheds his white-man’s ways. What the hell are individuals considering! There are far excessively numerous Costner bashers on the web. Where was Dances With Wolves filmed and who is in the cast? The Wild West-set epic won an incredible seven Oscars after moving audiences with its story of a US soldier being welcomed into a tribe of Lakota Indians called the Sioux. It is only one of three movies to be directed, produced and starred in by 63-year-old Kevin Costner. And it came out the year before his big starring role in Robin Hood: Prince Of Thieves. So where was this movie filmed, who’s in the cast and what else do we know about it? Dances With Wolves was based on a 1988 book by Michael Blake about a Union Army lieutenant who is brought into contact with a tribe. It was filmed in South Dakota, mainly on private ranches near Pierre and Rapid City. A few scenes were filmed in Wyoming. Specific locations included the Badlands National Park, the Black Hills, the Sage Creek Wilderness Area, and the Belle Fourche River area. The bison hunt scenes were filmed at the Triple U Buffalo Ranch outside Fort Pierre, South Dakota, as were the Fort Sedgewick scenes after the movie set wasconstructed on the ranch. The budget for the movie was $22 million (£16m), a large amount for the time, but it grossed an amazing $184 million (£131m) at the box office. Currently, it has an 82 per cent rating on Rotten Tomatoes, and the film led Costner to be adopted as an honourary member by the Sioux Nation. It was nominated for 12 Oscars and won seven including best adapted screenplay, director, score (which was by John Barry) and picture. A lot of the movie’s dialogue is spoken in Lakota, and has English subtitles. The cast is headed up by Costner as Lt. John J. Dunbar, Mary McDonnell as Stands With A Fist (a white widow adopted by the tribe leader), and Graham Greene as that very tribe leader, Kicking Bird. Also in the cast are Charles Rocket, Rodney A. Grant, Tantoo Cardinal, Michael Spears, Floyd Westerman and Jimmy Herman. The film’s running time is 181 minutes (2h 41m), though a four-hour version exists which was shown in cinemas the year after the original release. Costner went on to direct and produce The Postman and Open Range in 1997 and 2003 respectively, though neither matched the success of Dances With Wolves. The filmmaker probably remains most famous for Robin Hood but last year he was in Molly’s Game and this year he stars in The Highwaymen. Dances with Wolves. Dunbar, whose exploration of the Western frontier becomes mirrored in a search for his own identity. The film is shot as a narrative in continuous development, with Dunbar providing a voice-over narrative in the guise of journal entries. It begins dramatically with the badly wounded Dunbar who would rather choose death than allow the amputation of his foot. He charges the Confederate lines and so, unwittingly, becomes a hero. Allowed to choose his posting, Dinbar opts for the frontier. His increasing loneliness drives him to seek solace with the neighbouring Indian tribe. Gradually he is accepted as a member of the tribe, which in the America of the Civil War (1861-64) is seen as desertion. In order to spare the tribe any more retribution from the army, he leaves with his wife, Stands with a Fist, for the wilderness.CommentDances with Wolves is a film concerned with cultures in collision. To this is added the extra dimension of the inner search for Lt. Dunbar’s self that is mirrored in his external search for the frontier, that mythic place of freedom, peace, escape from tyranny and harmony with the land. Because of these collisions the film tends towards a greater questioning of its subject matter than a lot of run-of-the-mill westerns. Viewers are forced to call into question the traditional stories of the West and its notions of heroic white settlers bravely conquering the land of hostile Indians. Instead they must deal with a film representation in which the settler is the enemy both of the Indian and, to judge from Dunbar, of himself and of the land..

People came to it from every point of the compass. To the Spanish who travelled up from Mexico it was the North. British and French explorers arrived by coming south and the Chinese and Russians by going east. The Americans were the last to arrive on the scene and called it the West. Ever since its discovery the West has been a mythical place. It was not only a place of myth for the Native Americans who had been connected to the land for thousands of years, but also for the newly arrived Americans. The West became the most powerful reality and myth in the history of the United States. Historian Richard White explains: When Americans tell stories about themselves they set those stories in the West. The American heroes are Western heroes. When you begin to think about the quintessential American characters they are always someplace over the horizon; there is always someplace in the West where something wonderful is about to happen.
