2021 STEM Proposal Chanel Cobey-Williams March 31, 2020 Executive Summary Booker T. Washington High School is located in the West End community and rests in a food desert.
Having a STEM focal theme centered around the agriculture field our students could be the immediate respondors to community needs relative to health, education, beautification, sustainability, and local revitalization efforts. As the first school built for African-American students in the city of Atlanta, the following proposal outlines how the new Agricultural STEM focused program will build upon the mission
Booker T. Washington’s Jesup Agricultural Wagon and Agricultural School on Wheels through the expoloration of real world and innovative topics in STEM related fields.
One hundred percent of the students at Washington High School fall into one or more ethnic minority groups and are classfied as economically disadvantaged. Having a STEM program with a unique theme could also address the serious lack of minority representation in STEM programs at local institutions such as Georgia Tech or The University of Georgia. As the nation moves toward a greater emphasis on STEM learning we could end students missing out on critical opportunities by exposing and getting them to think critically about a more technological and innovative future. Contrary to most belief we want to show that the agriculture field is way more than farming. It relates to leadership, innovation, logistics, green technology, food safety, and ground-breaking improvements in response to the technological challenges of modern agriculture.
To support this effort this proposal contains the revised mission, vision, updated course progression, as well as fluid project based learning themes. As we rapidly move towards STEM certification this proposal also contains a very detailed explanation of the Cognia STEM certification process/requirements, STEM diagnostic tools, action steps, and a timeline for STEM implementation for certification. This proposal was created by Chanel Cobey-Williams the STEM Program Support Specilist for preliminary review purposes and subject to change to fit and address the needs of the STEM Program as we collect artifacts in pursuit of certification.

As members of the STEM program students will accelerate their coursework within Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics. In order to facilitate this process students are encouraged to participate in programs external to Booker T. Washington. Recommended programs include the Atlanta Public Schools Summer Mathematics and Science Enrichment Academy- available for rising 8th -12th graders.
