2 District 7 A message from... aaf District 7 Governor A.J. Busé I can’t tell you how honored and excited I am to be Governor of District 7 this year. I have been looking forward to this year for quite some time. Even though we’re already the best District in AAF, there are still opportunities for us to take huge steps forward and change the world together. I LOVE working in the advertising field and promise to do what I can to elevate our industry and make our clubs as strong as ever.

This year’s theme is “Sing Your S.O.N.G.” This acronym not only ties in with my Music City roots, but also highlights my efforts to encourage inclusion of ALL talented people into the advertising field and promote an atmosphere where everyone can succeed and thrive. Men and women, gay and straight, new and experienced, agencies and vendors, creatives and suits, any race or ethnic group, there is a place for all kinds of talented, hard-working people in advertising. We all have a song to sing and I want to encourage everyone to sing their song loudly!

stUDents – they are our future. They’re also our present. This year will have a focus on increasing the number of Student ADDY entries and adding at least one more NSAC team. I will also prompt clubs to include students in their programs, develop ways to encourage talented students to pursue careers in the advertising field, and create ways to foster relationships between students and working professionals.

orGaniZation – this includes not only local AAF chapters, but places where we work and volunteer. Advertising professionals are involved in and dedicated to a number of organizations in their lives. My plan is to foster an atmosphere where this involvement is encouraged, and where hard-working talent is rewarded with recognition and advancement. Our workplaces and our clubs will be stronger because of it.

netWorKinG – one of the areas where many of our members find value in belonging to AAF is in networking opportunities, making connections with others and garnering favorable, mutual benefits. I plan to more intentionally allow for networking to take place by recognizing where our members work, what services they provide and what professional connections they’d like to make. This is as simple as noting this information on a nametag, to planning for opportunities for networking to take place and prosper.

GroWtH – club membership growth, of course. ADDY entry growth, obviously. But also professional and leadership development growth. The advertising field changes like none other and we have to grow with it, while also providing resources for our members to grow as well. This will be done with conference workshops and industry information in the monthly e-updates and newsletters.

This Directory and Resource Guide will serve as your “song book” this year. It contains contact information for both District 7 and local club leadership. Plus there’s history, facts, guidelines, award winners and more. We worked hard to put this information together for you and hope you find it useful and beneficial.

Please let me know if there’s anything you need or anything that the District 7 Executive Committee can do to help you in any way.

Rock on!

46 District 7 Jan Gardner memorial Scholarship

The scholarship program was established in 1989 in honor of District 7 Governor Jan Gardner of Memphis. This scholarship is awarded annually to deserving students of advertising and its related fields. Students from District 7’s College Chapters are eligible, and criteria for the recipients include peer recommendations, writing ability and dedication to the advertising industry.

A selection committee composed of former Governors and other District representatives reviews each application and the scholarship is awarded during the annual Spring Convention.

The contributions of Jan Gardner to advertising, District 7, and her home club, the Memphis Advertising Federation, are plentiful. She was founder and president of a full-service agency for more than 25 years, establishing many “firsts” in the industry as well as within District 7.
