The meet against the Hawkeyes will begin at 6:00 p.m. CT (5:30 p.m. ET) on Saturday and will be broadcast live on BTN+. The Gophers return three of their four student-athletes who were tabbed as 2020 CGA All-Americans, including Shane Wiskus (AA, No. 1; PB, No. 2; SR, No. 5), Mike Moran (FX, No. 6) and David Pochinka (PB, No. 8). Timmy Kutyla was also named an All-American by the CGA for the Gophers, but graduated as last year’s lone senior for the Maroon & Gold. Minnesota has four seniors on the 2021 squad: Wiskus, Colton Dee, Russell Johnson, and Henry Meeker. The Maroon and Gold also welcomes a pair of freshmen to the team who will make an immediate impact: Noah Duran and Evan Ng. Head coach Mike Burns is entering his 17th season at the helm of the program. He will look to have a season similar to his 2019 CGA Central Region Coach of the Year push, in which the Gophers finished 2nd at the NCAA Championships. Assistant coach Jordan Valdez enters his 4th year with the team, while and assistant coach Russ Fystrom has returned to the Maroon & Gold to coach for his 37th year with the team. Outside of the gym in 2020, the Gophers set a program record with all 19 student-atheletes on roster being named CGA All-American Scholar-Athletes. Minnesota also had a total of 11 Academic All-Big Ten honorees and five Big Ten Distin- guished Scholars. Wiskus to Remain in Colorado Reigning 2020 CGA MVP Shane Wiskus has made the decision to remain at the United States Olympic & Paralympic Training Center (USOPTC) for the beginning of the Maroon & Gold’s season to continue to train for the upcoming Summer Olympics, as traveling between Colorado and Minnesota has created many difficulties due to United States Olympic & Paralympic Committee quarantine rules. If it is possible to do so, Wiskus will rejoin the Gophers near the end of season to return to the competiton floor for the Gophers.

Wiskus ended the 2020 season as the No. 1 ranked all-around gymnast, No. 2 on parallel bars in the nation, and No. 5 in the NCAA in still rings, which helped in him earning his third consecutive Big Ten Gymnast of the Year award with the team. The last Gopher to earn the award three straight years was John Roethlisberger (1990-93), who won the award all four years that he competed. Upperclassmen Lead the Way Minnesota’s 2021 roster features a total of 11 upperclassmen, making up nearly 2/3 of the Maroon & Gold’s team. Not only will the Gophers have four seniors on roster this year, but a total of seven juniors will also suit up for theAthletic team. Communications Communications Assistant...... ENG HEAD COACH >> MIKE BURNS For head coach Mike Burns, the 2020 season was a season unlike any other. The team was off to a promising start, with CGA All-Americans Timmy Kutyla, Shane Wiskus, Mike Moran, and David Pochinka leading the way for the Gophers. However, with only two Big Ten matches remaining on the calendar, the Big Ten and NCAA an- nounced on March 12, 2020 that they were ceasing competitions and championships because of COVID-19 public health concerns. The ‘U’ was still able to have plenty to celebrate despite having a shortened season under Coach Burns, as Shane Wiskus, the nation’s No. 1 ranked all-arounder and No. 1 gymnast on p-bars, was named the 2020 CGA MVP as well as the 2020 Big Ten Gymnast of the Year. Additionally, eleven Gophers named named as Academic All-Big Ten honorees by the conference.

Burns’ 2019 season with the Gophers was a historic one. The team finished second at the NCAA championships, which was the fourth time in program history and the best team finish since 1990. Burns set a school record by coaching eight different gymnasts to eleven All-American honors in all events. In the Big 10 Championships, Tristan Duran won gold in p-bars, the first gymnast to do so since 1992. Shane Wiskus was the national runner-up in the all-around at the NCAA Championships as well as CGA Rookie of the Year, B1G Gymnast of the Year and Freshman of the Year. Burns also won CGA Central Region Coach of the Year. In 2017, Minnesota placed fifth at the NCAA Championships, the program’s highest finish in 15 years and best in his tenure. Burns was named the Big Ten Coach of the Year. The Burns File
