PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

With three fourths of the current season now behind us, it’s interesting to reflect on the level of activity that our congregation has experienced so far this year. We have seen large numbers of our congregants enjoying a wide variety of educational, social and ritual events.

What we need to keep in mind is that the success of our programing is the result of a great deal of creativity, planning and hard work by a dedicated group of people who are willing to devote their time, energy and efforts to ensuring it’s success. The leadership of our professional staff, lead by Rabbi Sniderman and Executive Director Isaac Azerad, provides valuable guidance to our events and activities chairpersons and committee members.

As we begin to lay plans for the upcoming 2017/2018 season, I urge each of you to consider becoming one of the volunteers who make things happen at our Temple. Fortunately, we are a community that includes a wide range of talents and experiences, many of which can be put to good use here. To find out how you can participate, just contact the Rabbi, Isaac, or one of our officers.

Please check our calendar for the list of activities scheduled for the month of March. Among them are the BIW Theater Night, a Men’s Club Brunch, our Kallah Scholar weekend with Rabbi Uri Regev, and a selection of Miniversity courses. Our annual membership meeting will be held on Sunday, March 26 at 2:00 pm. Among other reports, our budget for next year will be presented, as well as our slate of officers and new board members. We look forward to seeing you there.

Best wishes to all,

Bob Vigder, President

FROM THE RABBI’S STUDY

The Violins of Hope presentation at our congregation was very uplifting and meaningful. I had, of course, heard about the project before, but actually seeing the violins and meeting Amnon Weinstein, who did the restorations, expanded my horizons. I should add that the fact that the display was in our sanctuary added significance.

In Temple Beth Israel’s ark, above our three Torah scrolls, another scroll is on display. That special scroll, from Czechoslovakia, survived the mid-twentieth century nightmare of Jewish history. We have it on permanent loan from the Memorial Scrolls Trust. When the Trust recently asked congregations that had one of their scrolls to make contributions to keep their efforts going, I sent a check from the Rabbi’s Discretionary Fund along with a personal check from my family.

When we talk about the Shoah, the Hebrew term for catastrophic destruction which I prefer over the English term commonly in use, we focus on the death of human beings and the obliteration of their communities. That is the way it should be. However, limiting myself here to material as opposed to human survival, every Torah scroll, however damaged, that is still with us can proclaim our will to survive and continue. The same can be said for any book that was plucked from the fire, some of which I have in my own collection.

Since I am neither a musician nor a musicologist, I haven’t focused on the survival of musical instruments. This is the way the Violins of Hope presentation expanded my horizons. James Grymes, who was part of the presentation, a professor of musicology at the University of North Carolina – Charlotte, wrote a book on the Violins of Hope. He told a good part of the story to us at Temple Beth Israel. He wrote that for those musicians that are no longer with us, “their voices and spirits live on through the violins that Amnon has lovingly restored.”

Violins of Hope is a powerful example of spiritual resistance. We learn how those who were suffering the most unbearable torture were able to forget the pain for a few moments by performing and listening to good music. We learn how Jewish musicians demonstrated the Nazi falsehood that Jews were incapable of great art.

I was moved by the presentation and proud to be part of a congregation that could host such a significant Jewish cultural and spiritual event.

PURIM CELEBRATION March 11, 2017 at 7:00 p.m. All are invited.

Things are not going well in Shushan. Following the departure of Vashti, many of her supporters are not thrilled with the “Replacement Queen” as they call her. Haman Von Stupidberg wants to be in charge of the military. King A. is so busy with the new ‘babe” that he isn’t paying a lot of attention to matters of state. There is political unrest and some might say upheaval. Therefore, there will be no Spiel this year.

But there will be one heck of a cocktail party after the Megillah is read. Megillah reading will begin at 7:00 p.m. Help is needed from members of TBI.

We need donations of the following items: wine (any color you like), a non-alcoholic punch, chips, dips, “noshes”, which roughly translated means nibbles, hot appetizers & desserts.

If you are willing to contribute any of these items please call the office as Purim is fast bearing down on us. Unholy Haman, Batman!

In addition to our Sabbath services on Friday night and Saturday morning, our Temple offers so many wonderful opportunities to learn, share, dine and to establish relationships. Rabbi Sniderman has brought a warm, wholesome and meaningful comfort level to all our services. The choir continues to inspire and delight us with their voices accompanying the Rabbi on Friday nights. The catered dinners have enabled us to start the Sabbath in a delicious, friendly and social way. The Rabbi Eisenstat Miniversity offerings and the programs provided by the Beth Israel Women’s Club and the Men’s Club are of the highest caliber and have entertained many members of our congregation this year. Alice and I thoroughly enjoy our involvement and participation in Temple activities. We would love for all of these services and events to continue for years to come. Sadly, unless we all work together to spread the word about all the good things happening at Temple Beth Israel and recruit new members, we will not be able to continue. We need stronger financial support to sustain our current services and building needs.

Our goal this year was to grow our membership by 100 new members. Through your support and inspiration we have 56 new members. However, we have lost 42 members due to their sad passing or moving away from Longboat Key. The financial impact does not enable us to live within our means with a balanced budget. Our expenditures continue to exceed our revenues! There are two obvious options. Increase the amount of funds we can bring to the Temple through lots of new members, or cut programs that are woven into the fabric of the Temple. Alice and I will increase our donation to support the Choir for next year and years to come. Do you have a program or activity that you especially like and would support its continuation with a donation?

We love everything about the Temple! So let’s find the resources we desperately need by bringing at least two prospective members to our services and events. Do you have other ideas about increasing our source of funds? Please share them with us. Would you like to join the Membership Committee? Please call me at (941) 383-4899, I’ll be delighted to get you involved. Happy Anniversary! SOCIAL ACTION COMMITTEE

In February, JoAnn Goldwater, Pat Kaplan and I visited the Turning Points facility in Bradenton. This is an organization which helps homeless persons and those in danger of becoming homeless. They provide a vast array of services from haircuts and dental work to showers, laundry and computer time. They will repair bikes, supply a registered person with counseling, and help with medical services, food and clothing. Homeless persons get employment lists and apartment availability, and Turning Points enables people to use their address for communication needs.

Kathy Brooks, our past president, said that many years ago, our Temple supported Turning Points with supplies and donations of all types. This year, the Social Action Committee will again ask you our congregants for items which may be deposited in the large boxes in the Social Hall. The Volunteer Coordinator of Turning Points provided us with a list of needed materials. This list is attached to the box. It includes toiletries (for men and women); gently used clothing for men, women and children; socks and caps; sturdy sandals; books for children; backpacks; and (can be partially used) bottles of shampoo, lotions, soaps. Please “visit” the box and contribute needed items. We are a generous congregation and Turning Points is worthy of our generosity.

Gulf of Mexico Drive Benches in Planning Stage: We are still waiting for a response from our town Planning Committee and the DOT with regard to the donation and installation of benches along Gulf of Mexico Drive at specified bus stops. We will pursue this project as soon as we have further details. Stay tuned for ways in which you all can help make this happen.
