It would be fair to say that no single event at WLYC, takes more effort on the part of the club members to organise. The original idea for the race came, about in 1966, from a member of Liverpool University Sailing Club, who was a representative on the WLYC sailing committee. WLYC were at the time planning a race to mark the 17th & 18th September 2016 Centenary of the Borough of Southport, while LUSC were considering a 12 Hour Race for Universities. These ideas built on the success of a British Universities Championship held on the Marine Lake in 1965. Under the chairmanship of Jack Whiteley, the decision was taken to run the event over 24 hours. OVER 30 TROPHIES TO BE WON The race, which was first held in 1967, is now on its 50th Race. The Race is sailed in four classes of dinghy – 80 ENTRIES , GP14, Lark and Firefly, around a standard OVER 800 COMPETITORS EXPECTED triangular course of 1.2 miles. Although the waters are PLUS SUPPORTERS AND SPECTATORS relatively safe the Race is sailed continuously for 24 hours with unlimited crew changeover. Even in extreme weather conditions, the race will continue. Therefore a The 24 Hour Dinghy Race organised by team of several people is required to sail each boat, with West Lancashire Yacht Club is the dinghy most crews changing over quite a few times during the sailing calendar’s toughest endurance race. There is serious silverware to be won – the most coveted of the over thirty trophies is the Southport Centenary Trophy presented to the winner by the Mayor of Sefton, as explained previously, to commemorate the reason why the Race was first sailed – Southport Borough’s cen- tenary in 1967. Keeping score of each boats progress is a team of observers and computer operators using dual systems to help ensure completeness and accuracy. Food is available in a marquee which also plays host to a big party on the Friday night which goes on into the small hours. 50 YEARS • 1967 –2016 This year sees an important milestone in the history of one of the most popular events on the calendar, where the social is as legendary as the sailing. West Lancashire Yacht Club's 24 Hour Race reaches its half century. It has remained one of a few events specifically for teams representing an RYA affiliated sailing club. Whilst the Marine Lake at Southport provides the ideal environment to race dinghies all day and all night in varied weather conditions and for people to spectate.

50 YEARS • 1967 –2016 WEST LANCASHIRE YACHT CLUB CELEBRATES THE 50TH ANNIVERSARY 24 HOUR RACE IN 2016 T Into the groove, just before dusk HE idea for the endurance race was dreamt up 50 years by the WLYC Sailing Committee who were looking for an event to celebrate the Centenary of the Borough of Southport in 1967. A representative of Liverpool University put forward the idea of an invitation twelve hour race for university sailing clubs. The university sailors felt an unusual event might attract a higher number of entries. They were not wrong! September was the natural choice for their event as students would be free to compete before the new Local characters without whom the race could not run university year started. It was suggested by the committee that in September there would barely be 12 hours of daylight to fit the race into, so why not go for 24 hours instead? And so the 1st 24 Hour Race was born. The initial race had 60 entries, (50 of which sailed, the other 10 withdrew due to the lack of a boat or insufficient team members) consisting of clubs and university sailing teams from as far as Royal Victoria YC in the south to Strathclyde and Edinburgh Universities in the north, racing in the then relatively new Enterprise, GP14 and Firefly dinghies. The concept was simple: The winner would be the team to race the farthest over a triangular course starting at 2pm on Saturday and finishing at 2pm on Sunday, using the rating system. No limits were placed on the number of team members or the number of 'change overs' or 'pit drill' as it is referred to in the original sailing Scoring in the early days

1983 the aftermath – racing stopped when the marquee blew down instruction! But there were strict rules written especially to cover unique situation of the 'docking area', which still exist today. From its relatively humble start the West Lancashire Yacht Club 24 Hour Race has grown in popularity over the years, at the height of the popularity of pulling in over 100 teams, at which point the entry cap had to be enforced. The race has been sailed in Enterprise and GP14 dinghies from the outset, with the Firefly dinghy being reinstated a few years ago as it has once again become a popular choice for university sailing. The Lark dinghy has been included in the race since 1999 enabling more university teams to compete in the race. The club now uses its own handicaps which have been A familiar face at the race '87 calculated using more than 40 years worth of data for the location and are examined annually in line with the develop- Sailing Club, winning a pretty amazing 14 races, whereas the recently ment of the classes involved. dominant South Staffs Sailing Club have managed 5 wins. They broke the race record sailing an we are immensely grateful. However, a trip to Southport can also be a amazing 126 laps in 24 hours. With either one or two reefs in the Main Sail, there is now no need to change the Genoa for a smaller sail, just furl as much as is required to give the correct balance. It is a fully functional roller reefing system integrated with the Genoa.

The spar is made from a material that makes it virtually indestructible. The danger of damaging a metal luff-foil, while raising or lowering the mast on one of the classic cruising boats is now a thing of the past. Sail Reefing System The sail can be stored furled round the spar in one of our own long sail bag, preferably straight, or even stowed in the boat if necessary. Stocckport, Cheshire ROBINSONS BREWERY 178 YEARS AND COUNTING... Once upon a time, on September 29th 1838, there was an ordinary man called William Robinson, a cotton weaver of modest means, who bought a small pub called the Unicorn Inn on Lower Hillgate...

HE Robinsons family have been brewing beer at the Unicorn Tbrewery in the heart of Stockport ever since, and recently they have rebuilt their time-honored Victorian brew house, rebranded their family of ales with a fresh new look, and now they are celebrating a very special milestone – 178 years of brewing excellence! In honour of their impressive lineage, Robinsons have launched a new Visitors and Training Centre. Visitors can marvel at the magic of the brewing process, admire new and original brewing equipment as they tour around the brew house, play with interactive screens, create their own perfect pub guide, visit the Shire horses (almost as famous as the brewery itself), buy beer related gifts and also explore some real vintage gems showcasing just how things have changed since 1838. Guests are invited to round off their visit with a delicious homemade lunch or afternoon tea – freshly prepared, using local ingredients and of course sample some of Robinsons’ finest cask ales (or soft drinks for those who are driving!). Robinsons Visitors Centre is not just about the history of a brewery but of a family which has played – and continues to play – an immensely important role in British Brewing. Pop in to Robinsons Visitors Centre and discover the story for yourself. For more information on tickets, training courses, and conference facilities at Robinsons new Visitors Centre, visit www.robinsonsvisitorscentre.co.uk or call 0161 612 4100.

HE week's racing concluded with two excellent races, despite the shifty The 60th anniversary winds giving the Race Officer Sean Semmens some challenges getting Allen Brothers Enterprise the fleet started. With the wind picking up to a blustery 10-12 knots, National Championship held the close racing throughout the week meant that every boat in the T47 strong fleet was working hard to maintain positions over their at Brixham Yacht Club closest competitors. was won by Tim Sadler and Off the water the pressure was also on the fleet to keep up with the social Richard Sault from Yorkshire scene, as the class celebrated its 60th anniversary with outrageous 1950 Dales SC with a convincing themed fancy dress, a silent auction for a mast kindly donated by Selden 26 point lead over their rivals, and a more riotous auction of a British Olympic Sailing Team poster donated Phil Ford and Jane Humpage by North Sails. Combined with fines for on the water misdemeanours, over £500 is being donated to the Enterprise class' adopted charity Sail 4 Cancer. from Bristol Corinthian YC. Additional and much appreciated day sponsors included Pinnell and Bax, and Hyde Sails. With the fleet split into three divisions – Gold, Silver and Bronze – the daily prize giving, improvers awards, and the infamous Gez Brown 'Ginga awards' ensured inclusion across the fleet including first time attendees Robin Broomfield and Paul Bloomfield from Minima YC in their first Enterprise Championship winning the Ginga Plate for the lowest placed qualified boat with all races sailed. The overall finishers in the top 10 were particularly close after nine races with just one discard. Jeremy Stevens, crewed by daughter Rebecca from Penzance YC were third overall, just beating another father and daughter combo, Phil and Laura Bevan from Grafham Water SC into fourth place. Newcomers to the fleet, Darren Roach crewed by his sister Natalie Roach from Royal Navy SC had a disappointing last day dropping from second place to fifth overall. Popping up in 6th and 7th places, and fighting for leadership of the Silver Division were more father Jeremy and Rebecca Stephens

The much revered 'rolling pin' trophy for the first co-habiting just taking the lead against Nick and Rachel Jackson from couple was won by Phil Snewin and Ross Coleman of Chester SC. Burghfield SC. The race organisers from Brixham YC commented on how the Proving that you don't have to be related to sail well together, Enterprise races were incredibly closely fought, despite the Alice Allen and her crew Andy Massey (Sharky) from Bristol frequent and random wind shifts. With often just seconds Corinthian YC came 12th overall to win the Ladies National Helm separating the boats after 3 lap races, this shows the close trophy against close competition from Ali Morrish and Nick Scutt competitive nature of this one design fleet. This also reflects in from St Mary's Loch and Middle Nene SC. the variety of boats in the top ten, with Peak Dinghy Spares GRP The winner of the Bronze Division was Ali's father Charles Morrish hull in first place, the Rondar Mark 3 hull in second place and a crewed by Emma Coleman from St Mary's Loch and Midland SC, Prior-built all wooden hull in third place, proving neither age or with Thomas Kliskey and Sophie Barrett from Penzance YC in price of hull makes that much difference – it all comes down to second place. the sailing skill of the helm and crew – which was very much demonstrated as the shifty conditions made each race a real The much coveted Mary Arnold Baker trophy for the first lady 'snakes and ladders' game on the water. helm or crew was won by Jane Humpage, a welcome returner to the fleet having not raced in a national championship for many The final night prizegiving was a black tie dinner, with fantastic
