Years 1908-2008 A Hundred Years, Hundreds of Hearts Spirit 2008

DEDICATION

The West End House Camp has remained strong and successful over the years due to the dedication of a strong Board of Directors that has been in existence since the camp was incorporated in 1939. These officers and directors volunteer their time, efforts, and resources throughout the year in so many different ways to ensure that the Camp remains the excellent facility that it has always been. The last two Presidents of the WEH Camp, Henry Barr and Marty Jacobs, have been extraordinary leaders who have guided the organization through challenging and exciting times. Each had been an active member of the Board of Directors prior to assuming the Presidency, and each continues his strong commitment and presence after stepping down from that top leadership position. Henry Barr, who was President from 1998 – 2002, has been associated with WEH Camp since 1957. As Vice President of the Camp Corporation under Louis Kane, as well as President, he drafted a new set of bylaws for the Camp. They very clearly served to determine the decision- making process vis-à-vis the “old” way, which had often been a somewhat complicated affair. As a result, the streamlined Camp Board now forged ahead with a revitalized group of Directors, with renewed interest, and with a commitment and a clear mandate as it faced the challenges of the approaching new century. Henry has continued to be a guiding force on the Camp scene, and his “wise counsel” has often been sought in many matters, ranging from property tax questions to the establishment of a camp for girls and to everything in between! As President of the WEH Boys & Girls Club (2000 – 2003) he was at the forefront of raising the millions of dollars needed to renovate the Club in Allston (June 2001 – April 2002), approaching each step of the fundraising and construction process in his usual calm, deliberate and thorough style. Marty Jacobs began his affiliation with the Camp in 1965. His six years as President (2002–2008) were marked by two historic events: the Centennial Celebration of the Camp which was held at Gillette Stadium in May 2008, and the approval of the Board (also in 2008) to permit Camp land be designated as the future site of a camp for girls. Both milestones were the results of years of planning and meetings, and Marty was there every step of the way. He also conceived the idea for the WEH Camp History Book, spending two years researching, interviewing, scanning pictures, and writing text for this definitive chronicle of the first 100 years of the Camp. Marty has served on the Board of the WEH Boys & Girls Club, where he was Vice President and where in the mid 1990s he co-chaired a highly successful Capital Campaign. Henry Barr and Marty Jacobs are classic examples of individuals who consistently give of themselves and, as a result, whose actions have made a positive impact upon others. Although each at the end of his term as President might have opted to scale back or step back entirely from the scene, both have continued to be active members of the Board whose opinions and recommendations are sought. In tribute to the outstanding contributions rendered to the West End House Camp, the 2008 Spirit is respectfully and affectionately dedicated to

HENRY BARR and MARTY JACOBS

ABOUT THE COVER

There were so many wonderful aspects of the entire 2008 centennial year and the summer of 2008 at West End House Camp in particular. The front cover highlights the special Color War that took place between the White Champions and the Blue Centurions. Color War is always long anticipated and remembered. This year’s 6 day contest featured great competition, excellent sportsmanship, and a Song Night that will hopefully serve as a model of quality for years to come. In honor of the centennial, Directors Bill Margolin and Steve Lepler came out of coaching retirement. Together with their superb coaching staffs and spirited team members, they all produced a fantastic Color War that will be etched in WEHC’s collective memory. The back cover shows our beautiful Long Pond in all of its splendor day and night. All of us who have the privilege of spending time at West End House Camp know that we are in a magnificent setting. Close your eyes in the middle of the summer or in the middle of the winter and you will see images that are filled with fun, friends, tradition, and beauty, beckoning you back to West End House Camp.

MESSAGE FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

I am writing this message on December 31, 2008, the end of a very special year for West End House Camp. 2008 was our Centennial Year, and during the past twelve months we celebrated this milestone in many ways: last year’s Camp Breakfast was held in a new setting (the Harvard College Business School’s Spangler Center in Allston) with a record crowd of 275; the Gala, two years in the making, was held on May 3rd at Gillette Stadium and was attended by over 600 folks who came from distances ranging from a few miles to thousands of miles (e.g., California, Washington State, Arizona); Visiting Day at Camp saw the unveiling in the dining hall of the Centennial Plaque; on Sunday, August 19 (the day after the campers left) WEHC invited neighbors and friends for an Open House; and during Old Timers’ Week the newly renovated cabin that is dedicated to the memory of Joe Kaplan was dedicated in the presence of the Alumni and many guests (renovations were made possible through the generosity of Mr. Kaplan’s daughter, Laurie, to whom the entire West End House “family” owes a huge debt of gratitude for her extraordinary support). The final event was the lobster dinner served “lakeside” on the Friday night of Old Timers’ Week, followed by an amazing display of fireworks off the docks. This was surely a year to remember! The best part of the Centennial Year, however, was the eight weeks of camp - we had a spectacular season, filled with kids and led by a dedicated staff. Anyone who was lucky enough to have been there last summer can vouch for that. I will vouch for the fact that 2009 will be even better! We are well underway with the registration process (enrollment is great!), the staff is virtually all in place, Sandi (the nurse), Lee and Linda (the cooks), and John (the property manager) are looking forward to next summer in East Parsonsfield. The operation of the camp does not happen by itself - some of the people who were so helpful are listed on the acknowledgments page. I do, however, want to single out some very special individuals. Steve Lepler, who has made such a positive difference at Camp during his ten seasons as Assistant Executive Director, is absolutely tireless in his efforts. Beginning in the fall of 2008 he assumed the full time position of Camp Director and wasted no time in organizing and mobilizing for next season. Consequently, we have already witnessed many positive results – all of which will mean an even greater future for the camp. I am especially indebted to Steve for working so closely with me last summer and ensuring our smooth operation. Ryan Wilensky, formerly a camper, key member of the staff and coach, came on board in October of 2007 as Director of Operations. In the months leading up to camp—and especially at camp, itself—he proved himself to be a most valuable addition to the entire process. His presence has truly made a positive difference, and we all look forward to having him with us in the future. My gratitude also goes out to Program Director Danny Walsh, who was such a valuable part of the team. It was really nice to have him back at camp again. We were delighted to welcome back Lee Russell as the head cook at camp. (He had been with us previously in 2004-2006). Assisted by his wife, Linda, and by Brian McCarron, Lee kept the delicious food flowing from the kitchen, and always accommodated special events. We are truly grateful for the expertise and concern of Lee, Linda and Brian, and especially for the quality and quantity of the food they prepared. As I have said many times, the property manager is such a key part of the operation, and John Fredette willingly faced any and all tasks. He is such a knowledgeable and talented person, and he made sure that the facility ran smoothly at all times. Thanks, also, to Norman Scott, whose efforts and presence at Camp each day are genuinely appreciated, and our gratitude to Joan Scott for her help and support. They are a great couple! I want to express my sincere appreciation to Ramie Lepler, who once again this summer volunteered in many instances and was always ready and willing to lend a helping hand. Thank you, Ramie, for all that you have done for us. I am especially pleased to offer my thanks to my wife, Bryna. Her volunteer efforts keeping track of the campers’ spending money, picking up the mail, making trips to the clinic or hospital, running the canteen, helping in the infirmary, picking up supplies, etc., are truly invaluable. She is a remarkable person! Most of all, I want to offer my gratitude to the staff and to the campers. Ultimately, the success of the season comes down to quality of campers and quality of staff – and once again both “categories” were of the highest level! Don’t forget to check out our fantastic website (www.westendhousecamp.org) and to let your friends know about us! We continue to attract new campers largely through word of mouth, and we welcome your referrals. In the meantime, stay well, and take care. Call (617-783-2267), email ([email protected]) or write (105 Allston St., Allston, MA 02134-5029) me if I can help in any way.

MESSAGE FROM THE CAMP DIRECTOR

It is August 17th, 36 hours after 120 happy campers left to rejoin their families after a memorable season at West End House Camp. Since you left, I have taken a 3 mile walk around the lake and a 4 mile walk through the apple orchards to the cliff with awesome views of Long Pond. These strolls have allowed me to get an excellent perspective on what made this year special, as well as all that has been accomplished since my return to WEHC 10 years ago. When I first met with Bill and then WEHC President Henry Barr, we set goals of how I could help camp get even better than it was at that point. These included increasing the number and quality of the campers, increasing the amount of instruction that was done in all activities, ensuring fun friendly competition with better sportsmanship, having a busier schedule with more choices/activities, expecting higher standards of staff performance and maturity in all aspects of their jobs, doing out of camp special activities such as socials and hikes, and leading a recruitment strategy that consists of tours during all seasons, house calls, active outreach and follow-up, and new campers invited to and introduced at the camp breakfast. It has been very satisfying to see the steady progress that has been made in all of these areas, culminating in this year’s excellent camp season, which may have been our best yet (despite the weather). The success of 2008 was a collaborative effort among many key people. First of all the number and quality of the campers were at a level not seen for decades. The relationships, support from, and collaboration with the campers’ families was also crucial to the good feelings that permeated the camp. The overall staff effort and seriousness of purpose was established early in our initial training and orientation sessions and continued throughout the season. The team of leaders that we put together was truly exceptional and each person was a major contributor to 2008’s success. Director of Operations Ryan Wilensky returned after a 9 year absence to lend his spirit, organizational skills, coaching ability, leadership, and high standards of what it takes for a staff person to be at his best for the campers. Program Director Danny Walsh positively impacted so many aspects of the camp, from the waterfront to sports to evening activities to staff scheduling to his excellent work with the campers. Waterfront Director Charlie McGibony was always at the docks, ensuring safety, teaching swimming, arranging for a varied and fun waterfront schedule, and providing his calm veteran leadership to camp in general. Charlie and his waterfront staff (Thanks Avergons!) taught Red Cross courses so well and the kids tried so hard that 152 campers received Red Cross cards for accomplishing the next level! As always, it was a pleasure to collaborate with Bill who has continued to be a mentor, friend, and icon of all that is special about WEHC. All of us who try to follow in his footsteps have a large task at hand. The mutual goals that we all have of making our second century even better than the first will provide the blueprint for successful collaboration as we move forward. How do we improve upon our current quality? First, we do all we can to encourage continuity of our best campers and best staff. We look forward to the return of most if not all of our key staff leaders. We will actively pursue staff at all levels who have shown excellence, commitment to our goals, and certification in important skill areas. Although promoting deserving folks from within is our first choice, we also will fill gaps that we have with quality mature individuals who will help us in certain important areas. My vision, that I believe I share with all campers, families, counselors, and leaders of camp, is to solidify our camp as the best, safest, most fun, life-enhancing experience possible. We will keep and expand upon the core activities and values that have made camp so successful. The tradition and legacy of making friends for life, becoming part of a family that is second only to one’s own, and giving back to the camp for all it has done for each of us should continue to guide each of our actions in the second century of WEHC. I look forward to collaborating with all of you to accomplish these vital goals. Best regards to you and your family, Steve Lepler MESSAGE FROM THE DIRECTOR OF OPERATIONS

Before I talk about the wonderful 2008 camp season, there are many people I need to thank. First off, to the members of the Board of Directors who sought me out and helped convince me that I should come back to camp during my summer “off.” You were right. Also to Bill and Steve for welcoming me with open arms and being receptive to all that I hoped to accomplish this summer. To Dan Walsh, who was my fellow Gottlieber in 1992 and continues to be one of the most reliable people in the West End family. Dan is one of the most unselfish people I know and as Program Director initiated most of the activities during the summer. Thanks to Bryna for doing everything that nobody else wants to do including overseeing the laundry, canteen, letters home and taking a huge share of the van driving. Finally, thanks to my soon to be wife, Rachel. When I first proposed the idea of the both of us going to an all boys camp for the summer, I thought it was going to be a tough sell. But, when she said “sounds like fun” I knew I better give her another proposal quickly. One of the truest adages about camp is that it is only as good as its staff. The staff can make a bad activity good, a good one great and a great one memorable. I remember Josh Swiecicki once saying “picking up trash can be a great activity if the staff makes it fun.” Special thanks to the Senior Counselors for providing leadership to the younger staff and leading new and improved activities. I will remember Mike Jacobs for running a terrific Sailing program and doing Model Rocketry, Brandon Avergon for running an amazing “Staff Wrestlemania” and “Desert War,” Rashad Cudjoe for running the “Gold Rush,” Dave Voshchin for running the new “Gladiators” activity and for agreeing to do Maureen’s laundry, Jordan Shapiro for running the new Intermediate Leagues, Ayura for doing Astronomy and Science adventures, Andrew DeMarco for coaching the unsettled stomachs of the 10-under soccer team, Mike Stawowy for running the Archery program and doing a lot of the van driving, Sam Jekowsky for being the Inspection Master and for being the model for all Senior Counselors, Steve McGibony for being a huge late season addition and Evan White for being our best referee. Although he was not a bunk counselor, the contributions of Luke Fredette in the kitchen, in waterfront activities and with BunkOne were huge. Hopefully we will see Luke back in 2009. Our younger staff stepped up this summer and led activities as well. Thanks to Dan Bernard, Ben Yudysky and Ben Olins for doing the “West End Weekly” and for organizing this Spirit. One of the highlights of the summer for me was watching Dan and Ben O argue about how to deal with the Goose dropping issue in front of everyone during Elections. Thanks to Jesse Charney-Golden for running leagues, coaching Intercamp sports and for his spirited Mess Hall announcements. Finally thanks to Matt Shivers for heading up the Arts and Crafts program. Safety is always the #1 priority at camp and Charlie McGibony, as Waterfront Director, ensured the safety of everyone at the Waterfront as a mature adult with a military background. Charlie worked endlessly, prioritizing safety first and managed to schedule campers for a variety of activities including Waterskiing, Water Bongo, Banana boating and Sailing. Finally, I just want to thank everyone, including the campers for making Rachel and I feel so welcome. We experimented with many ideas this summer such as Karaoke, Astronomy, Intermediate Leagues, and Model Rocketry which I hope everyone enjoyed. I was pleasantly surprised by the quality of campers at West End, even compared to when I was last at camp in 1999. Everyone has such a genuine love for the camp and a respect for each other that makes West End even better than ever. I will be back in 2009 to help the start of the next 100 years of West End, which will be even better than the first!

-Ryan Wilensky

ELECTIONS 2008

The Republicans and Democrats held their conventions after the Camp season. This may have been strategically done in order for them to have ample time to respond to the issues brought about at the West End House Election Convention held in July. There were many great candidates for the posts this year who debated in the primaries and raised money from local Cornish businesses. The Cabinet met a couple times over the summer for a black-tie Munchkin breakfast. The Cabinet members reported on their jobs and had a spirited discussion on the issues of the day. During the last week of camp, the Cabinet met to discuss what went well over the summer and ideas for further improvements.

The Council Ring was again the place to be during many choice times at WEHC. Our unique and fun version of Wiffle Ball engaged hundreds of participants and spectators. There was a bit of controversy early on as there was a dramatic increase in the number of home runs being hit. Steroid use was quickly ruled out as the reason. The new supply of slightly thicker bats as well as the overall improvement and excellence of our players seemed to be the main reasons behind this power surge. During the first part of the summer there were two tournaments: the Junior World Series of Wiffle Ball and the Senior World Series of Wiffle Ball. Both tourneys started with a dozen three person teams. After a number of close and exciting games in the Juniors, the finals came down to Jacob Stetson, Zach Chason, and Adam Josephson vs. Drew Harris, Jeremy Luna, and Panharith Kong. Stetson’s crew pulled away to take this prestigious title. In the Senior tourney, Chris Moriarty, Eric Lesser, and Jacob Leppo used their power to advance to the finals against Marcus Tingling, Grady Newberg, and Jacob Kramer. Moriarty’s team continued to be dominant and won the crown against their noble opponents. The next two tournaments were even bigger. In the Senior-Junior tourney there were 28 teams of three and in the Camper-Counselor tourney there were 32 teams of four! Both of these competitions went many rounds with some amazingly close and exciting games, as well as a few blow outs. Because of the combination of frequent rain and many intercamp teams that had numerous practices and games, these two tournaments were not totally completed. However, this did not diminish the enjoyment that was experienced by so many in their shining moments in the Council Ring. Wiffle mania is sure to return to WEHC during the summer of 2009!

HIKING 2008

The beautiful area in and around West End House Camp was explored and enjoyed by many campers during the centennial season. There were several hikes up to the cliffs overlooking Long Pond and West Pond, as well as around the perimeter of our lake. On the 4th of July a group walked down to West Pond to view the annual boat parade that takes place there. Danny Walsh took a few bunks of campers to the Ossipee area of New Hampshire where they did moderate hikes up small mountains in that area. These were followed up by other activities, such as swimming, disc golf, and camping out on the shores of a beautiful lake. All of the participants came back extremely happy and a little bit tired. The big hike of the summer was to Mt. Chocurua. An eager group of courageous hikers set out on a drizzly late July morning. As the ascent began up the challenging Brook Trail, the rain picked up and lasted for awhile. When discussing the options at that point, no one wanted to turn back. The group proceeded to the summit as the rain gradually stopped. They all felt great about their accomplishment! The walk down the Liberty Trail to complete the 9 mile loop was free of precipitation, but full of puddles. People were glad to get back into the dry van. The stop at KHOP for an early dinner was a well deserved ending to their journey. Congratulations to this stellar group consisting of Shin Tsujimura, Jacob Leppo, Chris Moriarty, Jesse Weiss, MoMo, Vince Leppo, Cameron Hart, Caleb Johnson, Joe McKinnon, Jose Noyola, Alex Hebert, and Vicheth Seang, led by Steve Lepler, Danny Walsh, and Charlie McGibony.

HOME AND AWAY SOCIALS

The boys of West End House Camp did themselves proud as they socialized with the girls from Camp Fernwood Cove during two fun events. The first was held on July 15 as a bus and two vans traveled from East Parsonsfield to Harrison, the home of Fernwood Cove. This was our second year of visiting; this year’s social there was also a huge success. There was much dancing and mingling on their lighted tennis courts. No one wanted the evening to end. Even before we left that night, we finalized an agreement for us to reciprocate and host them at our camp. Little did we know that it would be such a huge event… On the evening of August 12, the day after Color War ended, three busloads of girls pulled into our parking lot at 7:30. The crowd gathered in our beautiful rec hall, a much better venue for a dance, with an amazing sound system blasting out tunes that immediately got everyone moving. All but the youngest WEHC campers were given the opportunity to attend, and most chose to be there. Once again the night went by too quickly and reluctantly the girls headed back to the buses and our guys back to their cabins. Did we make the most of our homecourt advantage? Yes, as there have already been discussions about more such gatherings during the summer of 2009.

WATERMELON LEAGUE 2008

In last year’s Spirit we posed the question, “Can the Walsh’s threepeat?” Now we know the answer, “Almost, but not quite.” West End House Camp’s unique form of softball, in which all campers and staff are divided into 8 large teams and play 2 inning games with everbody batting and fielding in each inning, had a season of close and exciting games. After a full season of 7 games, the 2 teams led by Danny Walsh and Ryan Wilensky/Mike Jacobs finished in a tie for first with records of 6-1. Tied for third with records of 4-3 were the squads of Sam Jekowsky/Rashad Cudjoe and David Voshchin/Andrew DeMarco. With the identical record of 2-5 were teams captained by Mike Stawowy, Brandon Avergon, and Steve Lepler/Charlie McGibony. Occupying the cellar was the team nobly led by Jordan Shapiro. In the eagerly anticipated and well played championship match, the Wilensky/Jacobs juggernaut put an end to the Walsh dynasty. They enjoyed their championship watermelon on the last night of camp. As the 2009 season approaches, people are already getting excited to play and to see if Ryan or Mike Jacobs can go back to back. Get ready for some fun, friendly competition!

INTERCAMP SPORTS REPORT

By Ryan Wilensky

This year’s Intercamp season was successful in terms of variety of sports and great competition. The Intercamp season started off the year with a 12 under Basketball victory over Cody in a terrific game 35-31. The team was led by MoMo, Grady Newberg, Jake Karger and Zach Chason. Then West End brought a 12-under group to Cody for a Soccer game. Again, a solid Cody squad gave the team all they could handle taking a 2-1 lead. But, West End scored 3 straight goals by Grady Newberg, Jake Karger and Brendan Cronin and held Cody off 5-4. Other great performances were by Panharith Kong and Justin Hirschfield.

The annual 15- Under Basketball “House Game” was once again played with an atmosphere that only the Duke Blue Devils enjoy. In a dominating performance, West End won 74-36 with a suffocating 1-2-2 press. Kyle Danielson led the team with 19 points and Chris “the Eraser” Moriarty led the team defensively on their way to victory. Other solid contributions were made by Dan Bernard and Chris Scott.

Another highlight of the summer was the 13-under Basketball team finishing in 2nd place in the Robin Hood tournament led by Coach Jesse Charney-Golden. The team played well and was led by Tony Adams and Eric Lesser.

West End was also the runner up in the 15-under Baseball tournament. The team won their semi- final game in dominating fashion over Robin Hood and lost a tight 8-6 game in the Finals to Winaukee. Coach Jordan Shapiro led the boys well in their defense of the 2007 title.

During a 3 day stretch of rain and thanks to the cooperation of Robin Hood, West End hosted an 11-under and 14-under Basketball double header. In the 11-under game, Robin Hood won an exciting game 43-41, but in the 2nd game West End won 79-69 in what would have to be called the “Jared Klapman” game. Klapman scored 55 points vs. a terrific Robin Hood team.

Other new intercamp sports this year were Archery and Flag Football. Since both sports were new, it took some adjustment to learn the rules of these competitions, but both teams represented West End well. The 13- Under Flag Football team was led by Eric Lesser and Steve “Randy Moss” White. Mike Stawowy coached the Archery team who had contributions from Sam London and Evan Vale.

Finally, in the last competition of the year, West End hosted the annual “10 and Under Day,” in which Softball, Soccer, Newcomb and Basketball were played. The team was dominating in all of the games, except for Newcomb, which ended in a tie. Great performances by the three Jacks (Meaney, Conlon, and Lesser) and many others led the way.

Thanks to all the coaches and campers for continuing to bring that great West End spirit to Intercamp competition. We pride ourselves on intensity and sportsmanship and are extremely well respected wherever we go. West End finished with a final record of 19-10-1 record and is ready to top this in 2009.

WEST END WEEKLY

Welcome New Staff By Neil Sharma

The 2008 West End House Camp season brings a myriad of fresh faces to the staff. These new guys and girl come from all over the country in trying to make this summer the best one in the camp’s 100 year history. It is about time we meet these new staff people. Let’s start with Ryan Wilensky, yes, the Ryan Wilensky. He was last a staff man here in 1999; however, I am sure everyone has seen his name up on bunk lists in the rafters of almost every bunk in camp. His official title is the Director of Operations, where he will oversee the activities/programs of camp as well as work to develop the younger staff. He has also been running a basketball clinic during leagues, which is a favorite among some campers (especially Eric Lesser). He lives in the new Burnes Cabin with his fiancée, Rachel. She is a former Ohio State Buckeye wide receiver who will have a key role on the waterfront staff in driving the Malibu. Now we’re going to meet Charlie McGibony from Cleveland, Ohio. He is our new Waterfront Director. For all of you who were at camp in 2007, and remember Steve from 2B, this is his father. Charlie sleeps in the extravagant West End Auxiliary. He brings leadership to the staff, and hopes to improve the swimming skills of each camper. Charlie is currently in a mild state of depression because not only did his Cleveland Cavaliers lose to the Boston Celtics in this year’s NBA playoffs, but also his beloved Cleveland Indians lost to our Boston Red Sox in the 2007 MLB playoffs. There are also other members of the 2008 staff who were not here in 2007. Mike Jacobs and Jordan Shapiro, both of whom are long time West Enders, decided to come back to camp for the 2008 camp season after their short leaves. Ayura Oshiru was hired to run activities based on magic, theater, science, astronomy, music, as well as lacrosse. The two new 1st year C.I.T’s, Colin Dixon and Leo Luna, were both referred to camp via family references. Both will help in attempting to make 2008 the best summer in West End House Camp history. Camp is already off to a great start. ………………………………...... Night Activities; West End Idol, Prize or Consequence By Danny Bernard

Night activities at West End started with a little noise on Tuesday. It featured the first ever West End Idol. With the arrival of a new karaoke system, the concert gave campers and staff a chance to show off their vocal abilities. Bunks sang and danced to the likes of Nelly, , and Madonna. Matt Shivers and 3A were favorites among the three judges, Danny Walsh, Brenden Taylor, and Brandon Avergon, West End’s own . However, not every performance was viewed so highly. After Justin Avergon’s turn on stage, Brandon thought that the Avergon legacy was tarnished. “At this point I would like to reintroduce myself as Brandon Smith. I’m in 1A,” he said. The humor of the judges may have rattled the performers, but it was enjoyed by the audience. . Through crackling voices and off-key pitches, West End Idol still showed how much talent our camp really has. After Watermelon games on Wednesday, Thursday night’s activity was Prize or Consequence. After bringing numbered chips back to the Council Ring, 30 campers received their fates from the Handsome King Rock. 2B CIT Brion Rock flaunted a Dr. Seuss hat, a pink shirt, and a red cape, as the almighty decision maker gave each camper either a “prize” or a “consequence.” Prizes included pizza from KHOP, breakfast in bed, and extra ice cream. Some consequences were goose poop pickup, ketchup and mustard head, and even an hour sitting beside Dan Saucier.

…………………………… Junior Jujubee By Ben Olins

Few spectacles can compare to the sight of 45 juniors running across a soccer field with the sole intent of crashing into each other. It’s a little bit like watching a bad action movie, but instead of bombs and robots, we have wiffle balls and nine-year-olds. Of course, I’m referring to Friday’s Junior Jujubee game. From Raymond Wu’s outstanding jail break attempts, to Adam Jospephson’s renditions of the “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon” maneuvers, the classic West End game had it all. The coaches lost their voices, Anthony Langlois lost his sandles, but no one was a loser on this fun night. In the end, the Luck of the Irish and the Smart Houses prevailed in sudden death overtime. But as we know, in Jujubee, all are winners. …………………………… DID YOU KNOW… THAT BILL STARTED WRITING FOR THE CAMP NEWSPAPER IN 1959?

WEST END WINS HOUSE GAME! WILENSKY COACHES TEAM TO 74-36 VICTORY OVER ROBIN HOOD

By Neil Sharma West End tradition dates back to the past hundred years. One of its most cherished traditions is the House Game, the annual 15-under basketball match features our West End team playing its arch rival Camp Robin Hood. The rivalry was renewed this past Saturday when a crowded Rec Hall hosted the game once again. Robin Hood brought about 80 fans, all pumped for the game, but no more excited than the West Enders. Our fans cheered, painted chests, and screamed like there was no tomorrow. The game tipped off at approximately 7:20, when Robin Hood took a quick 2-0 lead, silencing the crowd. At that point no one in the gym, including Wilensky, thought West End could overcome such an insurmountable lead. However, West End closed out the first quarter with a 23-2 run. The game was smooth sailing from then on. With help from fellow CITs Ben Yudysky, Danny Bernard, Gottleiber Chris Moriarty, and 4A-er Chris Scott, Kyle Danielson led the team with 19 points. The whole team contributed to the victory: Ben Ryter, Eric Lesser, Sam McGann, and Marcus Tingling all scored. After the final buzzer sounded, the West End fans stormed the court and waved the Robin Hood fans goodbye. Best of luck to the 15 and 13 under teams as they compete at the Robin Hood Tournament on Tuesday!

West End Rocks the Bee By Jesse Weiss, 1A

Although West End did not place in either the team or individual competitions at the Fourth Annual Interrcamp Spelling Bee, the efforts of nine bright campers brought some glory to the camp. For the 15-under team, Marcus Tingling, Jake Ryter, Eric Lesser, Alex Hebert, and Jesse Weiss tried their best and came in fourth place for the team competition. Tingling also came in fourth place in the individual competition. He fought the hardest but was eliminated by missing the word ‘iridescent,’ “I felt terrible,” Tingling said, “I was astonished, it was so disappointing.” The juniors did not fare any better. The four man team did not even make the playoffs for either the individual or team contests. Joey Rowland was disappointed because he worked hard during rest-period spelling practices, but faced tough competition at the bee. Sam Eggert, Christian Trombley, and Mohamed Muhamed also tried their hardest. Bill Margolin supervised the trip, but as good as the bee was, the highlight of his trip was stopping at Dairy Queen. “The Blizzard was great,” he noted. It has become a spelling bee tradition to feast at DQ after the bee. “I’ve waited a year for this day,” Bill said, reflecting on the bee, “We fought hard and we will be back again next year.”

Close Calls with Camp Cody By Ryan Wilensky

During the first two weeks, the 12-under age group played two games vs. Camp Cody. The first game, which was played in the Rec Hall last Saturday, was a terrific game in which West End survived a 3- point shooting barrage from Cody in a 35-31 victory. Three days later the group headed out to Cody for a soccer game, in which West End survived an early deficit on their way to a 5-4 victory.

The basketball game was a back and forth battle. Every time West End started to gain a comfortable lead, the resilient Cody team would hit a timely 3-pointer. It wasn’t until Jake Stetson sank two clutch free throws with 30 seconds that the team felt safe. Those two free throws gave West End a 35- 31 lead, which ended up being the final score. The team was led by great performances by Grady Newburg at the point guard position, and MoMo who dominated the paint all game long. Momo was the leading scorer with 12 points, Grady had 8, and Jake Karger and Zach Chason each had 6. Karger sparked a 6-0 run late in the game with consecutive outside shots. Other scorers were Justin Hirschfeld and Jake Stetson. Thanks to other team members Eric McNeilly, John Stewart, Sam Eggert, Josh Hirschfeld, Nick Scott, Josh Wertheimer, Panharith Kong, Jahsiah Toby and Deh’Kwan Rabb for contributing to the team. Coaches Mo Williams and Matt Freund were able to start West End out with a victory in Intercamp action.

The soccer game was just as intense and just as close at the end. Again Grady Newberg and Jake Karger led the team all game and each had a goal in the 5-4 victory. Cody got out to a 1-0 lead, and then Matt Yudysky tied the game with a goal. Cody took another lead at 2-1. In the second half, West End dominated a ten minute stretch in which Grady Newberg, Brendan Cronin and Jake Karger all had goals to take a 4-2 lead. After Cody cut the lead to 4-3, Cronin scored another goal to make it 5-3. After a late goal by Cody, the team held the lead thanks to the play of Panharith Kong and Justin Hirschfield, who controlled the ball. Other solid performances were by Jeremy Luna, Jake Stetson, who played goalie in the second half, and Juan Heneo. Special thanks to Rashad Cudjoe and Ben Olins for keeping the undefeated Intercamp season alive. Rashad had to do double duty, as a referee in the second half of the game as well.

West End brought the Intercamp record to 3-0 on Saturday, with the infamous “House Game” vs. long standing rival, Camp Robin Hood. The team was coached by me (Ryan Wilensky) and Jesse Charney Golden. The team was led by veteran players Kyle Danielson, Matt Yudysky and Dan Bernard. Other team members included Chris Scott, Chris Moriarty, Eric Lesser, Sam McGann, Ben Ryter and Marcus Tingling.

Scooter Basketball Junior League regular By Ben Olins season results As a former camper, I know of campers’ curiosity regarding staff activity at night. It’s a burning desire among every camper to know what 1. Smart Houses their counselors do after hours. I feel, as a staff 2. Luck of the Irish man, like it is my job to inform the camp of these 3. Zenons activities. Unfortunately, an article that contained all 4. Johnny Tsunamis of these happenings would be several pages long, so 5. Brinks this week I will only speak of one: The new scooter basketball trend. Congrats to the Smart Houses on their victory Scooter Basketball was invented by over the Zenons in the championship! mistake. It was the result of discovering a new shipment of Hockey scooters, while in the middle of Senior League regular a basketball game. The rest, as you can guess, is season results history. Over the course of the next few days, 1. Bill Russell several staff members competed in two v. two and 2. Bob Cousy three v. three Scooter Basketball games. 3. Larr y Bird Occasionally, several scooter riders would compete 4. Kevin McHale against one or two leg dwellers. The idea of the 5. John Havlicek game is the same though; get the ball in the basket, and don’t miss. Congrats to the Bill Russells on their victory Several names have been thrown about for over the Bob Cousys in the championship! the new sport. David Lach is a fan of, “Scooterball,” Andrew Demarco prefers, “Skeeterball,” while Brandon Avergon just calls it his “weekly workout.” WATERMELON LEAGUE Despite the lack of a name, counselors from across the camp have been flocking to the rec hall to compete, to sweat, and to cut their hands profusely Team Record Runs by being rolled over by Matt Freund. Walshes 3-0 23 Several counselors have tried to advance DeMoschins 2-1 30 the sport by talking to companies such as Nike, Jekowsky/Cudjoes 2-1 26 Adidas, and Reebok. Development has been Wilenskys 2-1 20 temporarily suspended however, due to a minor law Taylor/Avergons 1-2 24 suit with the Wheel Chair Basketball League. For Mo-Shaps 1-2 23 right now, the future of the game may take place in McLeplers 1-2 19 post-coverage rec hall matches, and the occasional Stawowys 0-3 11 night activity. The lack of a name and a professional league does not hold back the staff though. Games are becoming ever more frequent, and ever more competitive. This of course leads to two things: intense games, and intense sweeping for the rec hall CITs. So remember, the next time your counselor walks in at midnight, sweating, breathing hard, and bleeding, he didn’t just try to take Rashad’s phone, he just spent his evening playing Scooter Basketball- the greatest sport to hit West End since Cantaloupe Kickball.

GIMP Learn a New Stitch Each Week By Matt Shivers

BOX STITCH 1) Take two rolls of gimp, and pull the strings out to your desired length. Cut the strings.

2) Make the two strings perpendicular, and put your index finger in the place where the strings cross.

3) While holding the strings with your index finger, the string on the left, and cross it over your finger. Do the same with the string on the right.

4) Take the string that is north of your index finger, and put it over the crossed string that is closest to it, and under the crossed string that is furthest from it. Do the same with the string south of your index finger. At this point there should be something that looks similar to a square or box.

5) Take the top strings in each hand and pull them. It depends on how tight or loose you want your gimp to be. Results may vary.

6) Continue doing steps 3,4,5 without the index finger. Once, you run out of string, you can make a keychain or a bracelet.

Visiting Day Edition

Visiting Day Ben Olins, 2A Staff

Hello and welcome to West End House Camp’s Centennial Year Visiting Day. This day is one of, if not, the most special day of the camp year. Staff and campers alike have been working hard to make this event great for friends and family. As always, beginning at around noon, we will have our highly anticipated barbeque. Our staff will cook up some of the finest burgers and hotdogs known to the lakes region of southern Maine. During the cookout, you will be able to sit down, relax, socialize with your son’s friends’ parents, and, of course, tour our beautiful facilities. However, before you fill your stomachs with fresh, never frozen, all beef patties, be sure to visit the Mess Hall at around 11:30 for the unveiling of our new Centennial Year Plaque. Throughout the day, you’ll be allowed to take your son into town to eat, stock up on snacks, and view our beautiful area. For those who fancy a quick and satisfying meal, KHOP (otherwise known as the Sacopee Valley House of Pizza) is the local favorite. It’s about ten minutes away, and has an extensive menu with items ranging from Buffalo Calzones to Baked Haddock Dinners. For those who desire a slightly more intimate, but still casual setting, the Bay Haven Lobster Pound gives diners the real Maine Seafood Experience. A slightly more expensive bill is a small sacrifice for the best Lobster Roll within a 15-20 mile radius. If your son asks for a little junk food, you have two options: The Shop ‘n Save in Cornish offers a small variety of food for a slightly outrageous price, while the Kezar Falls Market in Kezar Falls also offers a small variety of food for a more slightly outrageous price. To finish off the afternoon, I personally recommend a quick stop at the regionally famous Rt. 160 Ice Cream Parlor. With flavors ranging from Vanilla Heath Bar all the way to The Tornado, Rt. 160 is sure to satisfy. Consumer Warning: If you normally order large ice creams, don’t. Please, for your stomach’s sake, just don’t. The smalls are like larges, and the larges are enormous! Finally, to finish off the afternoon, many families like to stop by our very own beach, Kennard’s. Whether you prefer to swim, paddle, or if you made the Rt. 160 trip, just barely float, Kennard’s is the perfect way to cap off a lovely afternoon. Note: if you do make the trip to Kennard’s, please don’t make fun of us for calling it a beach (we just see some sand and assume it is). Thank you for your time, and please enjoy your day here at the West End House Camp.

Desert War 2008 By Ben Yudysky, 5B Staff and Brion Rock, 2B Staff

Parents, this article not only reveals the outcome of Desert War (winners and losers), it will open up your minds, for you will come to understand what Desert War is. As we, the campers and staff, all know, every year the Desert War teams are colors, and the theme of summer 2008 includes the one hundredth year of camp and the Olympics, the two teams this year were Gold and Silver. The coaches were staffmen; for Gold the coaches were Andrew DeMarco, Matt Freund, and Matthew Shivers; for Silver the coaches were Jordan Shapiro, Justin Avergon, and Ben Olins. Their jobs were to get everyone involved in each activity as well as to win. Color Rush is the first of three events that comprise Desert War. The rules are the exact same as the game jujube where balls are stored in milk crates within distinctly outlined circles. The major difference is that instead of playing on the baseball outfield, the game is played in lower camp, split right down the middle through the Mess Hall. The object of the game is to get any body part into the circle surrounding the balls and to get a ball with a free walk back to your side. The first team with all 10 balls wins. It sounds easy, right? Wrong. Each participant has a flag cut from a bedsheet that hangs from their waistband. If a player is on the opposing team’s side, he is fair game to be sent to jail if his flag is pulled. The battles between juniors on juniors, seniors on seniors, and of course juniors on seniors revolves around each player’s flag and whether it is pulled. About five minutes in, both teams started to rush in an attempt to retrieve some of the balls. For the most part, the rushes were unsuccessful, which resulted in a large pile-up in both jails. To free the jails, a player must cross the field to the opponent’s side and run up to a roped off square holding the prisoners (his teammates). All he has to do is touch the rope or one of the cones on each corner without getting his flag pulled. After a few awe- inspiring jail breaks from Brett Wilson, Doug Spink, and Marcus Tingling, the teams were back on even ground as every player ran to the opposing team’s crate. Gold got every ball faster than silver did, and they took game one of Color Rush. At this time seventy minutes had elapsed in the game with another twenty remaining. Gold decided to wait it out by playing tough defense, and they wound up holding Silver. Game two was a draw as the time expired, and the seventy-five points for Color Rush went to Gold. The Ironman was the next event for the Seniors, while the Juniors took part in bombardment (dodgeball). The Ironman is a rugged triathlon that involves biking, kayaking, and running. At the end of each leg, the triathlete receives a war stripe (so it can be recorded that they finished). The bikers start at the entrance of camp and ride their bikes down the road to the intersection at the infamous house of Pickle Fingers where they turn right and continue to the opening of “the field.” After the grueling 5-15 minute ride, the bikers return to camp and leave their bikes at the entrance. Then they run down past the Mess Hall to the kayak dock. There are two choices at the kayak dock, a single or double kayak. Sometimes the choice is easy (for example there is only one kayak there) or it gets strategic (choosing to send someone in a double alone to save a single for the next triathlete). Some smart teams never have to wait; others have a line at the docks waiting for their two singles and one double kayak. The kayakers paddle to Kennard’s and back. After the kayakers get back, they pull their kayak onto the land and proceed to run around the tennis courts, up the stairs to the outdoor basketball court, up the inner path, and run two laps around the perimeter of the baseball field and back down the road to the finish line. As campers, we had a tough time with the Ironman, and that was WITHOUT the field section of biking. There was not much in terms of analysis, but the final result was sixty-five more points to the Gold Team. While the Ironman was going on, the juniors were in the Rec Hall playing Desert War bombardment. A lot of games were completed in the 2 hour time limit, and in the end everyone had fun, but many kids got out due to the boundary rule. In terms of winning and losing, Silver and Gold tied bombardment 5-5. The final activity in Desert War was Capture the Flag, another game with a simple concept. This game is played on the outfield of the baseball diamond. Instead of a crate of balls like jujube, a Frisbee lies within the circle. The flags in the waistbands still applied, and a pulled flag was the only way to get out. The game becomes interesting when someone gets into the circle. There is no free walk back – a person has five seconds within the circle before they have to try and run the disc back to their side. The games alternate between junior and senior games, unlike Color Rush where everyone plays at the same time. Gold continued their dominance and won all but one game, and Desert War was declared over, 300 – 45 Gold. A spirited, fun and tiring day for all!

Junior Deal or No Deal Sam Eggert, 2A

On the night of the Fernwood Cove Social, every Junior played West End’s version of the popular game show Deal or No Deal. Two campers from each Junior cabin got to play at different times to compete for the good and bad prizes. The better prizes featured tubing, Rt. 160 Ice Cream, and first to use the new Water Bongo. The bad prizes included mess hall and goose poop pickup with Ben Olins. Something that surprised many was that none of the bad prizes were chosen. A rundown of all the awarded prizes can be seen below:

5A: Candy 5B: Chips and Candy 1B: Two bags of chips 2A: Tubing 2B: Bongo ™

Oliveri Vs. Balmazi Chess Match Ben Eggert, 4B

In the Mess Hall about a week ago, an epic battle featured a West End House camper, Michael Oliveri, and a grand chess master, Leon Balmazi. Our beloved Bill has always been a fan of chess, and he’s encouraged campers and staff to take part in the strategic game. Michael Oliveri is a world ranked player, who jumped at the opportunity to play a grand chess master. Leon Balmazi is the father of a former camper and staffman, Marc Balmazi. Like the grand chess master, Michael Oliveri also has some experience, and he has been playing for many years. Both players love the game, and even though Oliveri lost, it was still a great match that I’m sure both players learned from. Many people came to watch, for Michael is one of the few campers who have beaten Bill (he’s already some kind of a legend). He is a great chess player, but this time the champion came out on top.

Bongo! Eric Lesser, 4B

As many have noticed, there has been a new addition to West End’s waterfront: The Bongo. The Bongo is a large water toy that can be used by all ages, meaning campers and staff. It came with a log, and the campers/counselors try to run across it without falling into the water. The Bongo is used by campers during their waterfront activities and on special activities when bunks win it as a prize. Special thanks are given to the anonymous donor for the money used to purchase the Bongo, and the staff members who set it up.

Hood Comes to the House 11-Under Basketball Loses a Close One; 14-Under wins 79-69 By Danny Bernard, 4B Staff

It seemed as though severe weather would halt Robin Hood hoops competition for a second straight year until the West End Rec Hall came up big in the clutch. Camp Robin Hood brought an 11-under basketball team, a 14-under team, and a few fans to the Rec Hall this past Thursday on a rainy afternoon. The 11-under team, led by starters Zach Chason, Mitchell Lesser, Adam Josephson, Grady Newberg, and Drew Harris, began the game a bit slowly, not scoring until four minutes into the game. After Newberg tied the game at 4 with a basket in the lane, Robin Hood quickly went on an 8-0 run. The run was surely going to end the first quarter, but Grady hit a long range three-pointer right in front of the wild West End fans at the buzzer. After a Robin Hood hoop, West End comes back with solid defensive possessions, a run capped off by Lesser scoring on a fast break. Matt Shaffer, Dominick Duke, Nick Salem, and Aaron Rappaport all contributed to the team. Following two easy lay-ups by Hood, Chason executed a spin move in the lane for two points. Robin Hood scored twice, and Lesser and Josephson each added another basket to make the score at the half 22-19 in favor of the Hood. During halftime, coaches Neil Sharma and David Lach tried to figure out how to end the easy Robin Hood lay- ups. “We’re going to play a 2-3 zone,” Lach said. “We’ll get up on the ball, slide our feet, and force more turnovers.” Reflecting on the first half, Sharma said: “We’re not playing as a team. We need to pass the ball more often and communicate with each other better.” West End started off the second half well, forcing turnovers and grabbing offensive rebounds. Robin Hood countered the 2-3 zone by flashing a man in the middle, but they were still forced to take outside shots. Most of their points were scored on fast breaks. West End led 25-23 after shots by Josephson and Jacob Stetson. Key components to the run included Jeremy Luna, who hustled for every loose ball, and Panharith Kong, who brought intensity to the lineup. Robin Hood resorted to a 1-2-2 half court zone. A deep two at the end of the quarter gave Robin Hood momentum and a two point lead going into the fourth. Hood opened the fourth just like the previous one ended, with a deep two, and soon took a five point lead. Chason and Lesser both had nice baskets, but they were matched with a Robin Hood score and a three-pointer. During the upcoming possession Jeremy Luna dove on the floor for a loose ball after the team gave up on a possession, which seemed to spark a new run. After six straight points by Mitch Lesser and a few by Chason and Newberg, West End took the lead 41-39. With 1:00 left in the game, Robin Hood got the ball down low and got fouled. After tying the game on free throws, they get the ball back and got to the line again with 30 seconds left, hitting one of two shots and taking the lead. With fewer than 10 ticks left, Newberg found Josephson down low, and he rimmed out a turnaround shot. West End fouled much too late, and Robin Hood pulled off a 43-41 upset. The 14-under team, led by coach Jesse Charney-Golden and starters Jarrid McElligott, Eric Lesser, Jared Klapman, Marcus Tingling, and Zach Leppo, began the game hot, going on a 12-2 run. The 1-2-2 full court press posed problems for the Robin Hood ball handlers. McElligott got two quick steals, and Klapman got two lay-ups and a free throw. After a Hood basket, Klapman drained a three-pointer, stole the ball, and shot another lay-up. Jose Noyola, Connor Edwards, and Kyle Hood added defensive pressure when they were in the game. The first quarter ended 29-16 in favor of West End, with Klapman having scored 21 points. Robin Hood came out surprisingly strong in the second, bringing the game within eight. Klapman and Zach Leppo scored, bringing the game back up to 12. Vince Leppo entered the game, stole the ball, and hit a lay-up while getting fouled. Spectator Jordan Shapiro was impressed by the play: “That was awesome, man. You don’t expect the younger guys to make plays like that.” Similar play was seen from 4A-ers Steven Kessler and Kyle Hood. 4B-er Eric Lesser was fantastic the entire game, always in the right spots on the floor and always making the right play. Despite solid efforts off the bench and from the starters, Robin Hood stayed in the game, thanks to a few three-pointers by the lanky kid with a sketchy smile. West End held on to 47-36 halftime lead. Neither team could make a run in the third, West End just couldn’t put it away, and the quarter ended with a 12 point margin. In the fourth Lesser and Klapman continued their dominant play. Klapman took control of the point and scored twice, then Lesser stole the ball and made a pretty left-handed lay-up. With two minutes left West End took a 77-65 lead, prompting the entrances of 4A/4B-ers Corey White, David Adler, Gabe Gerson, Evan Swartz, Alex Hebert, and Carlos Pena-Lobel. The final score was 79-69, and Jared Klapman scored 54 points, more points than number of years Bill has been going to this camp. Maybe Robin Hood would have fared better had they brought more players than coaches.

Color War 2008 By Ryan Wilensky

The 2008 Color War was a close and memorable one. First off, Color War started on the morning of Wednesday, August 6th. With inclement weather being forecasted for a few days, Color War ended up starting in the rain. Campers were given the movie options of going to the Rec Hall to see Transformers or the Mess Hall to see Balls of Fury. This is one of the only times that Color War started when the campers were split up. About 10 minutes into each video, the magic words “Color War is Now!!!” flashed on the screens during the movies. Campers were stunned at first, then realized the moment they were waiting for had arrived. A special thanks to Dan Andelman (Producer of the Centennial Video and Phantom Gourmet) who was able to do this for us with only a week’s notice.

This was one of the most memorable Color Wars. Each team had 7 coaches. Bill Margolin coached for the first time since he coached on the White Warriors in 1982. Bill’s entrance, coming out of the Infirmary dressed as a Roman God, was the best moment of the summer. Steve Lepler also came out of Color War retirement as the Head Coach of the White Champions. This Color War was close throughout, as the White took control of the lead on the afternoon of Day 2, with a 4-1 split. The Blue Centurions swept the Omelet Games on Day 4 to give themselves a chance. But, they needed a 4-2 split on the morning of Day 5 to cut into a 30 point lead. White was able to win a memorable High Junior overtime Newcomb game, giving them a 30 point lead going into Song Night. Song Night was the best by far in my 14 years at camp. In any other year, either team would have won by 20. The Blue Centurions had great songs that were strictly about camp including songs about Bryna and 4:15 Fruit. The White Champions took some risks in their songs such as singing in rounds, clapping, and doing multiple songs; their team stepped up in a big way.

I would like to personally thank Danny Walsh and Ben Yudysky for helping run Color War. Also, I would like to thank Jason Cohen for volunteering to referee Waterpolo and taking care of the Spelling Bee. This had to be the least controversial Color War and I attribute that to the referees doing a great job and the coaches leading by example with good sportsmanship and positive attitudes.

Sweet Caroline

When we began, on that exciting Wednesday, we knew that white would be so strong. First on the fields, then at the courts and water, we saw that blue did not belong.

White, proud and true, standing out, victory, crushing blue. White Champions, (wo wo wo), good times never seemed so good (so good, so good, so good). We’ve been inclined, (wo wo wo), to believe we always would win this war.

Song Night is here, judges enjoy our story; White Team is ready for our crown. One hundred years, all of our West End glory, Champs are the best team ever found.

ALMA MATER (Greenfields)

Once we were campers, blessed by the sun Laughing and playing, having so much fun Once we had blue skies in heavens high above Once we were carefree, our hearts were filled with love.

Those were the days of our youth at West End.

Once there was Long Pond along a country road Once there were green fields where rivers used to flow Once we were so happy, our friendships they did thrive Once we were so young and strong, our Spirit so alive.

Those were the days of our youth at West End.

And now I know when dark clouds hide the sun And now I know when rivers cease to run And now I know there’s nothing left for me Nothing but my hopes and dreams and a cherished memory.

Those were the days of our youth at West End.

Now we are older, wiser and gray Thinking of West End House each and every day Now we bid thee fond farewell until another year Knowing that our love for you shall never disappear.

Those were the days of our youth at West End

And now I know when dark clouds hide the sun And now I know when rivers cease to run And now I know there’s nothing left for me Nothing but my hopes and dreams and a cherished memory.

Those were the days of our youth at West End
