Hall of Fame Inductee ‘M. Peter Rapp’ Class of 2009

A true lifer, Pete Rapp began his soccer career in the late 1950’s at the YMCA and at Goodhue in the Kiwanis Soccer League, the forerunner of the SIYSL. He played 4 years of varsity , and soccer at Staten Island Academy (SIA) and helped the Tigers win the MAAPS Soccer League championship in 1963. After attending MacMurray College in Illinois for 2 years, he returned home to Wagner College in1968, where he earned two varsity letters playing soccer under head coach William Lied. A fierce defender, many consider Rapp the best soccer player to ever play at Wagner.

While in college in 1969, Pete coached varsity baseball at SIA and upon graduation in 1970, Rapp,, began his 40-year career at SIA as Director of Athletics and Physical Education. After coaching the Academy's varsity baseball teams for 34 years and serving as the varsity soccer coach from 1970, he retired from his AD and coaching positions in 2003 and was named SIA’s Athletic Director Emeritus. Pete continues to teach at SIA and is still actively involved in the athletic administration at the school.

Pete has been active on the executive board of the Staten Island Elementary School Basketball League for many years and has been the leagues co-director since 2001. He has served as SIA’s Soccer Director since the school joined the SISL in 1979 and has coached and refereed in the league, as well as served on its executive board since 1984. Pete also served two different terms as a board member of the Athletic Directors Committee of the State Association of Independent Schools and is currently the president of the Athletic Conference of Independent Schools. He serves as the baseball commissioner of the Private Schools Athletic Association and for the past three years has been an active member of the Staten Island Sports Hall of Fame committee. In addition to the various leagues and committees that he serves, Pete has continued a 54-year amateur baseball/ career, pitching softball for 4 teams this past season.

Pete was inducted into the Staten Island Academy Hall of Fame in 1994. In June of 2002, he received the prestigious Staten Island Advance Service Award and later in the fall was inducted into the Wagner College Hall of Fame. Pete and his wife Martha have two children, Dr. Terri Lynne and Peter, and three grand sons.
